Beautiful Airs and Ballads of the British Isles. Par DIEHL MARCIA. This exceptional collection of 41 truly beautiful airs and ballads from the British Isles offers both well-known tunes by the prolific blind Irish harpist, Turlough O?Carolan and rarely heard melodies by anonymous composers; all have stood the test of time. Arranged for soprano or tenor recorder, these include O?Carolan?s classically influenced ?Lord Inchiquin? and ?Eleanor Plunkett? as well as ?O Gentle Dove? and ?Cuckoo Dear?? both examples of the strong tradition of song in Wales. Among other tunes, the haunting modal melodies of ?The Dark Slender Boy? and ?Enchanted Valley? express the melancholic heart and soul of the British Isles. A few of these songs have taken on a life of their own in modern times. ?Bonny at Morn?, a popular traditional tune of northern England and Scotland, was arranged for soprano voice and harp by the 20th century British composer, Benjamin Britten. ?The Skye Boat Song? originally recounted Bonnie Prince Charles Edward Stuart?s journey to the Isle of Skye after his defeat at the historic Battle of Culloden. Later, the song evolved into a lilting lullaby and was more recently used as the theme song for the popular Outlander television series. Departing slightly from recorder notation practice, author Marcia Diehl has judiciously arranged these melodies complete with spare slur markings to aid the amateur player in authentically and musically rendering these tunes. / Date parution : 2022-02-17/ Recueil / Flûte à Bec

5 Simple Strategies for Developing Jazz Language and Fluency. Par GABRIC LUKAS. According to musician and musicologist Gunther Schuller, 75% of all harmonic movement in jazz consists of ii-V-I progressions. Consequently, for the jazz improvisor, it is extremely important to be capable of playing a coherent phrase based on any member note of the ii chord and its extensions, in any key. In this book, music educator and world-renowned jazz saxophonist, Lukas Gabric focuses on helping you develop this essential skill. The five strategies outlined in Jazz Course for All Instruments are specifically designed to enhance your vocabulary and fluency as a jazz improviser. In a key segment, Gabric explains how longer phrases can be generated by combining minimal source materials. He also seeks to further your transposition and memorization skills as well as instrumental technique?all of which are required for effective improvisation. For those familiar with other styles of music, this reasoned, incremental approach could well open the door to the exciting world of improvised jazz. / Date parution : 2022-02-03/ Théorie / Tout Instrument

Par WILLIAMS STEPHEN. This book establishes a foundation for complete mandolin musicianship, both in terms of music literacy as well as having the ability to jam with other musicians without reading music. The student logically begins by learning the ?basic? fingering pattern used for the mandolin-friendly keys of A and D as shown in diagram form and standard notation. Tablature reading is lightly addressed, but not at the same time as note reading so the student avoids using tab as a crutch. A generous repertoire of progressively arranged exercises, fiddle tunes, a Bach bourrée, and folk and blues songs is included, often with online recordings and rarely seen complete lyrics. At this point, the book begins to diverge from its didactic approach to pure fun! As each new major key is introduced (G, C, F and E), the student learns the remaining principal scale finger patterns as well as a considerable amount of practical music theory covering pentatonic and modal scales and much more. Fittingly, the book closes with a dictionary of essential chords and a glossary to aid in further development as a versatile mandolinist. For Fingerstyle Guitar. Par GROSSMAN STEFAN. Ragtime is in many ways the quintessential American music. It arrived at the turn of the last century with many transitions, notably the discovery of the means to record sound, and the determination of Afro-Americans of genius to be appreciated as artists. The music we call ragtime represents not only a moment of great anticipation (as the advent of jazz was on hand) but also of fulfillment. There are perhaps, 200 classic ragtime pieces that represent a corpus of extraordinary beauty - some of the most straightforward, melodious, and out and out joyful music that there ever was. In the early 1960?s guitar players started to tackle arranging this music. David Laibman and Dave Van Ronk were in the vanguard of this movement. Van Ronk?s arrangement of St. Louis Tickle became a rite of passage for fingerstyle guitarists. Laibman?s arrangements of Scott Joplin?s classic rags amazed and challenged the fingerpickers from coast to coast and across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe. By the 1970s other guitarists tried their skills playing ragtime. In the last fifty years this pursuit has carried on. This collection presents eight outstanding guitarists and their approaches to arranging and playing cake walks and classic rags. Tackling the material in this collection will greatly help your development and mastery of the fretboard and what Rev. Gary Davis called your six-string piano. Both your hands will get a complete aerobic workout! An audio download link is included with performances of each title. / Date parution : 2022-01-14/ Recueil / Guitare

For Fingerstyle Guitar. Par GROSSMAN STEFAN. As aspiring fingerpicking guitarists started expanding their horizons from folk, blues, and ragtime in the 1970s, it was only logical to look towards early jazz tunes as a vast source for new possibilities. For one thing, they could follow the same evolutionary path from ragtime to jazz that had been taken by pianists such as Jelly Roll Morton and Harlem stride players like James P. Johnson and Fats Waller. These musicians all composed in a variety of styles, but their most ambitious piano solos expanded on the classic ragtime format developed by the likes of Scott Joplin, James Scott, and Joseph Lamb, using several strains that usually changed keys at least once. Morton, the self-proclaimed inventor of jazz, would record versions of tunes like King Porter Stomp and The Original Jelly Roll Blues that are similar to straight ragtime performances, and others where there is lots of room left for embellishment and jazz improvisation. The present collection is a bonanza for guitarists who want to tackle advanced arrangements along the lines of ragtime but featuring jazz age harmonies from the playing of Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, WC Handy, the Original Dixieland Jazz Band and other early jazz legends. The 32 arrangements included are by a wide assortment of guitarists including Ernie Hawkins, Pat Donohue, Lasse Johansson, Duck Baker, Ton Van Bergeyk, Sandy Shalk, Steve McWilliam, and Dorian Henry. / Date parution : 2022-01-14/ Recueil / Guitare

Par DATESMAN KYLE. Perhaps the first 5-string banjo book of its kind, Renaissance and Elizabethan Music for Banjo consists entirely of music from these early periods and provides banjo players with \'growing material\''that is, the opportunity to play in a number of different keys besides G major. This detail alone will expand your banjo horizon by requiring the use of unusual chord shapes. Written for classical banjo enthusiasts who want to further enhance their musicianship, some selections reveal one of the earliest aspects of music theory, that of modal scales. Various compositional forms and unfamiliar tempos are also introduced in arrangements that will help you become less dependent on the open fifth string. This type of music would be extremely difficult to learn by ear, so a book of tablatures should prove to be invaluable. Every piece is presented first in a vertical chord arrangement, which was the way it was originally intended' and then arranged in a linear horizontal style more familiar to modern players. Every tune is accompanied by performance notes supported by a helpful glossary. Written in tablature only with access to online audio, these pieces also make great finger-limbering exercises! Transcribed for Classical Guitar. Par MASCOTT PAUL. This book of 53 intermediate-level guitar pieces is derived from Le Secret des Muses, a two-volume collection of lute tablature by Nicolas Vallet (c. 1583 ? c. 1642). Born in France, by 1614 Vallet had relocated to Amsterdam where he established a dance school and was active as a composer, lute teacher and leader of a consort that played at weddings and festivals.Le Secret des Muses is among the last published collections of French lute tablature intended for the 10-course Renaissance lute, which was ultimately supplanted by the larger 13-course Baroque model. Most of these pieces consist of traditional European dance forms, but also contains a few settings of popular lute themes and longer works suitable for concert performance are included. Written in standard notation only with occasional drop-D tuning, these pieces make excellent sight-reading and warmup material as well as historically significant concert selections. / Date parution : 2021-11-03/ Recueil / Guitare

Three Late Sonatas for Classical Guitar. Silvius Leopold Weiss (1687 ? 1750) is known to guitarists as the greatest baroque composer for the lute, yet most are only familiar with the earlier portion of Weiss?s prolific output found in the British Library in London. Inspired by a forty-year friendship with the late Douglas Alton Smith - a major figure in the scholarly study of the history of the lute - guitarist, composer, and head of the guitar program at Temple University in Philadelphia, Allen Krantz explored the Weiss manuscripts found in other European cities, particularly the Dresden editions which contain the fifteen sonatas that Weiss produced from the late 1730s to the end of his life. Transcriptions of three of those fifteen late sonatas are featured in this book in modern standard notation along with the original lute tablature as found in the Sächsische Landesbibliothek - Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek, Dresden. While the baroque lute?s tuning makes some works awkward or impossible on the guitar, the three works presented here?Sonatas No. 35 in D minor, No. 42 in A minor and No. 45 in A Major? are in their original keys which happen to be guitar-friendly. The author?s generous and scholarly ?Preface? provides thorough historical and performance notes for the music in this volume. While just three of Weiss?s 109 multi-movement lute sonatas are represented here, the importance of this publication cannot be overstated. It contains some of the greatest music of a masterful lutenist? Weiss once faced-off with J. S. Bach on keyboards in a counterpoint improvisation contest?now made accessible to the modern classical guitarist.
