The composer and violin virtuoso Johann Stamitz not only established the world-famous Mannheim school in the 18th century but is known among clarinettists above all for presumably being the first to present them with a true solo concerto. Even though Stamitz left it at just this one concerto, it has enjoyed great popularity since its rediscovery in the 20th century and has become a standard work in the concert repertoire. Due to its moderate technical demands, it is ideally suited for music students as a ?first? solo concerto, and as preparation for the more demanding solo parts of Mozart, Weber and Spohr. The newly prepared piano reduction was undertaken with a view to make it easy to play so that also less experienced piano players can undertake the accompaniment of the soloist; a renowned clarinettist, editor Nicolai Pfeffer also contributes suggestions for the cadenzas ? the result is an ideal Urtext edition for student recitals and music schools.

Beethoven?s Piano Sonata no. 7 in D major is the third from his Opus 10, which appeared in 1798, and simultaneously the heavyweight of this group of works. As one of the most powerful sonatas from the early years, it captivates with its very broad spectrum of moods and highly elaborate interplay of motivic elements. At the centre is the famous Largo e mesto, mournful, plaintive and almost tragic in the profundity of its emotion. It is framed by an energetic first movement and a nimble Menuetto. The conclusion is formed by a vivacious-playful Finale which is reminiscent of Haydn?s humourful escapades. In an in-depth introduction, Murray Perahia discusses this masterpiece. A further edition from the Gertsch-Perahia workshop for the new edition of Beethoven?s Complete Piano Sonatas, as always with fingerings by the cult pianist.

The sonatas published in 1732 in Amsterdam, London and Paris under Benedetto Marcello?s name are to the present day firmly established in the cello repertoire. Although Marcello?s authorship is not undisputed ? by this time, the composer had already specialised in sacred works ? the musical beauty of the sonatas is all the more captivating. This four-movement F major Sonata offers all cellists well-versed in the first four positions a good introduction to the classical literature and to reading tenor clef. In this Urtext edition, the figured continuo part is additionally furnished with an easy-to-play keyboard realisation by Wolfgang Kostujak. The enclosed solo part provides fingerings and bowing marks for the cellist ? and thus the optimal provisions for a class recital!

Ausgabe ohne Fingersatz. Bach?s Six Partitas form what is presumably the most famous and challenging collection of suites in music history. Bach was aware of the weightiness of his cycle as he initially had these multi-movement partitas, composed in Leipzig between 1726 and 1730, published in individual editions. This culminated in their publication in an anthology that proudly sports the opus number ?1? in 1731. Their diversity of forms knows no bounds and the musical texture is infused with the most ingenious counterpoint, but at the same time performers will not miss out on the enjoyment of virtuosic playing in any way. G. Henle Publishers presents this magnum opus in a revised Urtext edition that consults the original editions as well as autograph sources while also extensively documenting the numerous entries in correction copies from Bach?s circle. In addition, the ornamented versions have been included in the appendix. For purists, Henle also offers this milestone work in an edition without fingerings.

Little early Sonatas. The piano sonatas in this volume were presumably written for teaching purposes and probably even before Haydn?s appointment to the court of Prince Esterházy in 1761. The designation ?Little early Sonatas? does not stem from Haydn, but rather from the editor of this Urtext edition, the doyen of Haydn philology Georg Feder, who gathered together these short works, which were written for ?aficionados?, into a group of sonatas. G. Henle Publishers is now issuing these charming compositions, which are particularly suitable for piano instruction, in a revised edition. It contains not only commentary texts reflecting the current state of research, but also new, inspiring fingerings by nine well-known pianists.

Le Carnaval des animaux. Written in March 1886 as a humorous occasional work for the traditional carnival concert organized by his cellist friend Charles-Joseph Lebouc, the Carnival of the Animals was so successful that Saint-Saëns banned performances and publication soon afterwards. He was worried that this 'grand zoological fantasy' - consisting of 14 short individual pieces for eleven instruments - might overshadow his serious works. Yet only five months after the composer's death, it appeared in print after all, beginning its worldwide victory march - in its original setting as well as in numerous arrangements. Thus, the Carnival did in fact arguably become the most popular work by this French composer and, owing to its musical originality, it is also a favourite in music lessons or for school orchestra performances. With this combination of a study edition and an edition in parts (for which additional parts for larger numbers of strings may be ordered), G. Henle Publishers now presents the perfect resource for such occasions.

Piano Sonata in C major Hob. XVI:48. This Haydn sonata has previously not been available in the Henle catalogue as an individual Urtext edition. Nevertheless, it numbers among Haydn?s famous piano works. It was written in 1789 (thus making it one of the ?late sonatas?) for the Leipzig publisher Christoph Gottlob Breitkopf. Its two-movement structure fathoms the entire spectrum of Haydn?s musical language: from the brooding-improvisational first movement to the sparkling, humorous Finale. Haydn exploits here the full range of the keyboard and its tonal possibilities. The world-famous pianist Piotr Anderszewski has contributed his fingerings for this Henle Urtext edition and invites you to explore this extraordinary work!

In the summer of 1888 while also working on his tone poem Don Juan Richard Strauss composed this brief Andante for his father Franz Strauss a member of the Munich Court Opera and one of the greatest horn players of his age. The Andante was intended as the slow movement ???of a still unfinished??? sonata that Strauss however never did complete (to the chagrin of all horn players). The piece thus remained unpublished until 1973. For the new Urtext edition by G. Henle Publishers the original autograph manuscript held at the Munich Public Library was able to be examined directly. The Andante is of only moderate difficulty and is ideally suited for teaching purposes and as aneffective Romantic performance piece. Charles Valentin Alkan?s cycle of variations Le Festin d?Ésope derives from his monumental series of etudes op. 39, the 12 Études dans tous les Tons Mineurs, and forms the culmination of that work. Now G. Henle Publishers presents, for the first time in an Urtext edition, what is by far the most well-known piano composition by this French pianist and composer notorious for the extreme virtuosity of his works. Because no autograph manuscripts survive, the first edition from 1857 is the sole source. The premier Alkan scholar Wolfgang Rathert gives details about the life and ?uvre of the composer in his preface, while fingerings are provided by the Italian keyboard virtuoso Vincenzo Maltempo, who has recorded numerous works by Alkan. By popular demand, this composer may also now finally assume his place in the Henle Urtext catalogue!
