We proudly present a new critical edition of the collected guitar works by Fernando Sor. Some titles in this edition may be new to some readers, eg the contents of volume 10. In each case the most dependable source has been chosen as copy text, on the basis of historical evidence and textual reliability.Variances and errors in the original scores are corrected and discussed in the comprehensive critical commentaries. All volumes contain detailed introductory notes that place the individual works in their historical context and discuss particular notation problems. Suggestions for the interpretation of ornaments are also provided. In Volume 1 and 2 (Studies), Sor’s likely purpose of each individual study is discussed in relation to the technique and fingering principles he describes in his 1830 Méthode.The music scores are produced at ‘concert size’ with clear and accurate music engraving and high-quality German printing. Original fingering is retained, but in order to make the music more accessible to players in general, editorial fingering has been judiciously added in works with little or no indications in the original editions. Added fingerings are easily distinguishable from the original ones by their different typefaces.

This publication is a completely revised edition of our five-volume guitar tutor. In the decades since its first edition, the musical interests of students and their practice possibilities have changed. To adapt to this, we have partly expanded and partly reduced the musical and technical material of the tutor. We have increased the number of recital pieces at all levels of difficulty,so that students can spend longer on a varied repertoire at their respective level. We have determined the works in the volume V which demand a more developed technique and musicality to extend the repertoire of those who wish to study further. The transcription of lute works has sometimes made significant compromises necessary. However, in our view, it is a significant gain that students can get to know a Dowland fantasy or an early English Baroque set of variations. This volume comprises 44 concert pieces from the early 17th to the 20th centuries, 18 advanced-level studies by Carcassi, Coste, Giuliani, and Sor, as well as several advanced-level technical exercises. Besides original works by Giuliani, Sor, Tarrega, and others, it features several transcriptions of works by Dowland, Rameau, J. S. Bach, and D. Scarlatti.

In contrast to Llobet´s output of just 14 original works, his transcriptions for guitar number 118, a considerable quantity of an extremely high standard. These were a huge influence on the two generations of guitarists following Llobet some of whom mercilessly and anonymously plundered and disfigured them for their own use! Being also an accomplished pianist, Llobet was in a better position than any other of his contemporaries to transcribe the German Romantic Masters, as well as the piano music of Albéniz and Granados, among others. Transcribed by Llobet mainly during his formative years these transcriptions are masterpieces which transcend their original setting. In his early career, Segovia played many transcriptions of Llobet, eg Bach's Prélude in Dm, Sarabande, Bourrée, Gavotte. This volume is highly recommended.

About Suzuki Method
The Suzuki Method is based on the principle that all children possess ability and that this ability can be developed and enhanced through a nurturing environment. All children learn to speak their own language with relative ease and if the same natural learning process is applied in teaching other skills, these can be acquired as successfully. Suzuki referred to the process as the Mother Tongue Method and to the whole system of pedagogy as Talent Education. The important elements of the Suzuki approach to instrumental teaching include the following:an early start (aged 3-4 is normal in most countries); the importance of listening to music; learning to play before learning to read; -the involvement of the parent; a nurturing and positive learning environment; a high standard of teaching by trained teachers; the importance of producing a good sound in a balanced and natural way; core repertoire, used by Suzuki students across the world; social interaction with other children. I am very grateful to Amanda Cook who took on the task of adding fingerings to most of these 55-year old arrangements. There is a small ossia part in Freude der Kinderjahre, a vocal ossia in Tischlied and also one or two places where chord progressions have been changed for easier performance. Transpositions from the original keys are noted in the musical text and dynamics have been inserted where they can be corroborated. I have refrained from including an English, or any other language, translation. Singers and guitarists will have their own resources and knowledge for translating the meaning of the texts into their own language, an essential tool for the interpretation of these wonderful songs.(Christophe r Duarte).
