For SATB with divisions, unaccompanied This setting of texts from Cymbeline and The Merchant of Venice, and Sonnet 98, is characterised by inventive textures and vibrant word-setting. The harmonic language is mostly diatonic but never plain, and there are pungent dissonances in the music of evocative power.

Repertoire of romantic choral music worth discovering: In his unaccompanied choral songs the expressive melodies of the song composer Schumann combine with a harmonically rich, sometimes even experimental composition. Though in current concert repertoire they are far less often performed than, for example, comparable works by Mendelssohn or Brahms, they are unjustly underestimated. Schumann himself wrote that he had composed the choral songs with true passion, in the belief that things like this did not yet exist. Schumann composed most of the choral songs, which are mainly homophonic, in 1849 for the Verein fur Chorgesang founded by him and the Leipzig Liederkranz. The volume brings together choral settings which where previously only available by Carus in separate editions, plus the choral song Glockenturmers Tochterlein which only exists in manuscript.

This second part-volume contains mixed choruses composed by Reger between 1904 and 1914. Most are sacred works, including the great motets op. 110 (Mein Odem ist schwach, Ach Herr, strafe mich nicht!, O Tod, wie bitter bist du), the Acht geistliche Gesange (Eight Sacred Songs) op. 138, and the fragmentary Vater unser. Functional liturgical music is represented with the Easter motet Lasset uns den Herren preisen, the Vier Kirchengesange (Four Church Songs) and the English-language Responsories. With the secular works, the Zwolf Chore aus dem Volksliederbuch (Twelve Choruses from the Volksliederbuch) form a substantial portion, flanked by Reger's setting of Good Night written for a school book, and the Abschiedslied for Fritz Stein.
In January 2008 the Max-Reger-Institut (MRI) in Karlsruhe began publishing a scholarly-critical edition of the works of Reger (RWA). As a Hybrid Edition it is exploring new approaches in editorial techniques. For the first time, in this edition the digital component for this volume will no longer be supplied on a data storage device, but published in an online portal.

The Folk Songs choral collection explores the musical world of Great Britain and Ireland. It contains 21 arrangements of English-language verse songs, canons, and ballads for mixed unaccompanied chorus. The folk songs are as diverse as the stories they tell: from the moving Greensleeves and Two hearts beat as one, through charming settings such as A rosebud by my early walk and There were three ravens, to saucy and tongue-in-cheek songs such as Dashing away with the smoothing iron and The mother-in-law. The stylistic treatment is very varied: the collection contains both original settings from the 13th century as well as arrangements specially commissioned from contemporary composers for the collection. The settings are in three to five parts, and the vocal parts sometimes divide. They are by well-known British and Irish composers such as Benjamin Britten, Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Charles Villiers Stanford, as well as contemporary composers such as John Rutter and Carsten Gerlitz - who give a new twist to these traditional songs. Calmus Ensemble has recorded six arrangements from this collection for their CD Folk Songs (Carus 83.034).

Music for unaccompanied choir features very little in the works of the violin virtuoso and composer Louis Spohr (1784-1859), although he used the chorus to great effect, particularly in his early Romantic operas. Now, Clytus Gottwald has transcribed three of Spohr's songs with piano accompaniment for five-part mixed choir. The texts are by Goethe, Amalia Schoppe, and Uhland. Spohr's music, stylistically typical of a period of musical transition with its indefinable qualities, offers in a special way starting points for Gottwald's technique of arranging, influenced as it is by contemporary music. Gottwald's transcriptions of songs and instrumental works for vocal ensemble, distinguished by their highly sophisticated sound, have become firmly established in choral repertoire throughout the world in recent years.

The enormous range of publications for mixed choir is published in the Choir Library in separate volumes for secular and sacred repertoire. The secular repertoire is divided into two volumes of unaccompanied choral music and one volume of works with instrumental accompaniment, mostly piano. The focus of the publishing house's program is on the Romantic era here. The majority of works was therefore composed by the great choral composers of this period: Johannes Brahms, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Robert Schumann. Later composers include Max Reger, Johann Nepomuk David and Kurt Thomas, but also Einojuhani Rautavaara and Siegfried Thiele. As female composers, Fanny Hensel and Clara Schumann are represented. We wish you lots of joy at discovering and singing!Volume 1 A cappellaI. Love SongsII. Seasonal SongsIII. Nature SongsIV.
