A contemporary critic remarked that Each hearing increases our appreciation and admiration of the works of the great genius, who, in all his pieces, understands so well how to draw the richest and most varied developments from every theme. Count d'Ogny commissioned Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) to write three symphonies for the Concert de la Loge Olympique, which was then recognized as one of the finest orchestras in Europe. He completed the second of these, the SYMPHONY No. 91 in E flat major, Hob. I/91, in 1788. It received its premiere the next year in the Tuileries Palace gardens, mere months before King Louis XVI and his royal family came to live there under custody of the French Revolution. It is his last symphony to exclude trumpets and timpani, but stuffed with delicacies that would have appealed to its Parisian audience. Its graceful, ebullient character offers no hints of the hard misfortune that would soon fall on the aristocratic listeners who first enjoyed this charming work. Instrumentation: 1.2.0.2: 2.0.0.0: Str (4-4-3-2+2Vc Obligato-3 in set).

Haydn composed his Symphony No. 77 along with his Symphonies Nos. 76 and 78 for a planned journey to England that never took place. Nonetheless, H.C. Robbins Landon calls these works the “English symphonies†as they are stylistically closely linked to the “London Bachâ€, Johann Christian Bach. Haydn himself, in a letter of 1783 to his Parisian publisher Charles-Georges Boyer, described the symphonies as ‘Leicht und nicht vil Concertirendâ€, meaning that they were light in spirit and did not contain extensive solo passages but rather a clear sense of classical form.Continuing the cooperation between Bärenreiter and the G. Henle publisher regarding Haydn’s large-scale choral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the “Works of Joseph Haydnâ€. The Bärenreiter catalogue now includes the complete performance material for several “Sturm und Drang†symphonies as well as all the London and Paris symphonies.

The genesis of Beethoven's 4th symphony came at an extraordinary time for the composer not only regarding productivity: Thus, in 1806 he composed, among other things, the 4th piano concerto, the three Rasumovsky string quartets op. 59, the 32 piano variations in c minor WoO 80, as well as the violin concerto op. 61. The first performance of the B-flat-major symphony occurred in March 1807 at one of the two noteworthy subscription concerts conducted by Beethoven in the Palais Lobkowitz in Vienna. In the course of time, this intellectually-stimulating work- so described by one of the reviewers of the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung - found ever-increasing appeal. Throughout the entire 19th century this symphony ranked with the best-loved and most frequently performed works; its popularity spread to England where the London Philharmonic Society played it at least 25 times in the period between 1813 and 1850.Extant are only a few drafts of the 4th symphony. The autograph served as the main source for the present edition edited by Prof. Bathia Churgin, likewise editor of the 3rd symphony in the new Beethoven Complete Edition. Consulted as reference sources were copies of the score and orchestral parts as well as the original edition of the parts.
