The genesis of Beethoven's 4th symphony came at an extraordinary time for the composer not only regarding productivity: Thus, in 1806 he composed, among other things, the 4th piano concerto, the three Rasumovsky string quartets op. 59, the 32 piano variations in c minor WoO 80, as well as the violin concerto op. 61. The first performance of the B-flat-major symphony occurred in March 1807 at one of the two noteworthy subscription concerts conducted by Beethoven in the Palais Lobkowitz in Vienna. In the course of time, this intellectually-stimulating work- so described by one of the reviewers of the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung - found ever-increasing appeal. Throughout the entire 19th century this symphony ranked with the best-loved and most frequently performed works; its popularity spread to England where the London Philharmonic Society played it at least 25 times in the period between 1813 and 1850.Extant are only a few drafts of the 4th symphony. The autograph served as the main source for the present edition edited by Prof. Bathia Churgin, likewise editor of the 3rd symphony in the new Beethoven Complete Edition. Consulted as reference sources were copies of the score and orchestral parts as well as the original edition of the parts.

The Sinfonia in E-flat major was probably written by Johann Christian Bach in his first decade in London, around 1765-70. Because of its small instrumentation and ease of performance, this E-flat major symphony enjoyed great popularity even during Bach's lifetime.

Haydn composed his Symphony No. 77 along with his Symphonies Nos. 76 and 78 for a planned journey to England that never took place. Nonetheless, H.C. Robbins Landon calls these works the “English symphonies” as they are stylistically closely linked to the “London Bach”, Johann Christian Bach. Haydn himself, in a letter of 1783 to his Parisian publisher Charles-Georges Boyer, described the symphonies as ‘Leicht und nicht vil Concertirend”, meaning that they were light in spirit and did not contain extensive solo passages but rather a clear sense of classical form.Continuing the cooperation between Bärenreiter and the G. Henle publisher regarding Haydn’s large-scale choral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the “Works of Joseph Haydn”. The Bärenreiter catalogue now includes the complete performance material for several “Sturm und Drang” symphonies as well as all the London and Paris symphonies.

The twelve “London Symphonies” comprise the sublime final statement of Haydn's symphonic oeuvre. They were written for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon, and Haydn himself conducted their premieres during his lengthy stays in the English metropolis in 1791/92 and 1794/95. The energetic, surging B-flat-major Symphony no. 102 belongs to the group of the last three symphonies premiered in early 1795. Exceptionally, Haydn here dispenses with the clarinets that are otherwise generally featured in his late symphonies. The instrumentation of the Adagio is also unusual, in that Haydn includes trumpets and timpani, both muted. This study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality. An informative preface and a brief Critical Report make the handy score an ideal companion for all current and soon-to-be Haydn fans.

They were written for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon, and Haydn himself conducted their premieres during his lengthy stays in the English metropolis in 1791/92 and 1794/95. The E-flat-major Symphony no. 103 was composed in 1795 as the penultimate of the London Symphonies. It owes its epithet to its unique beginning; a solo drumroll in the timpani ushers in the slow introduction. This opening bar, marked with Haydn's heading “Intrada” and a pause, even inspires many a performer to venture a short timpani improvisation. This study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality. Haydn's three Symphonies nos. 90-92 might rightly be dubbed his “Paris Symphonies Part II,” as they were commissioned in 1788/89, likewise by the Société Olympique, for which Haydn had already composed his six “Paris Symphonies” nos. 82-87 just a few years earlier. Ironically enough, Haydn would later sell these three a second time to Prince von Oettingen-Wallerstein who requested he “receive 3 new symphonies from him.” Regardless of such mercantile entanglements, Haydn shows himself to be at the full height of his mastery as a symphonist in these works. Completed in 1788 according to the autograph manuscript, the Symphony in E flat major no. 91 astonishes, even for Haydns standards, with its many idiosyncrasies, such as the Baroque, contrapuntal theme of the first movement or the strings of trills in the slow variation movement. This study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality. An informative preface and a brief Critical Report make the handy scorean ideal companion for all current and soon-to-be Haydn fans.

Joseph Haydn's so-called Paris Symphonies were composed in 1785 and 1786 for the masonic lodge “Société Olympique” in Paris, which ran a large orchestra and organised regular concerts. These six works are notable for their artful motivic work and playful wit. Haydn here pays tribute both to the discerning taste of the Paris audience and to the excellent abilities of the musicians in the orchestra. These symphonies rapidly became famous and popular throughout Europe, thanks to editions published variously in Paris, Vienna and London. This E-flat major Symphony, composed in 1786, is notable for its colourful use of the woodwind, which are also allowed to come to the fore in solo passages. This study edition reproduces the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, which isa guarantor of the finest scholarship. An informative preface and a brief critical report make this handy score an ideal companion for all Haydn fans, both present and future.
