This piece originated as an introduction to instrumental musique-concrete. In this sort of piece it is common for sound phenomena to be so refined and organised that they are not so much the results of musical experiences as of their own acoustic attributes. Timbres, dynamics and so on arise not of their own volition but as components of a concrete situation characterised by texture, consistency, energy, resistance. This does not come from within but from a liberated compositional technique. At the same time it implies that our customary sharply-honed auditory habit is thwarted.

In this lyrical work Jacob de Haan has created an atmospheric piece, which is in many ways similar to an on-stage stage musical production. Dreamy passages alternate with festive and swinging fragments as various aspects of village life, such as thebeauty, the peace and quiet and nature around the village, are portrayed. Why not add a unique twist to your performance by projecting images or films of your town or village onto a screen behind the band. The Camelot Chronicles is a series of contrasting musical tableaux, each describing the famous characters from the Arthurian legend. Noone knows exactly where Camelot was situated (favourite choices areTintagel and Glastonbury) but the story has passed into legend and isthe subject of many poems and novels, each of which have cloudedthe truth and added to the mystery. Let Philip Sparke?s music inspireyour band with this magical tale. At the Castle Gates is een muzikale weergave van Camelot.

Pastoral Pictures paints three contrasting ‘sound pictures’. The first movement is solemn and majestic, the second dreamy and serene and he final movement joyous and cheerful. A fantastic concert work for all Grade 2-3 bands.
