Each one of Bach?s Six Partitas features seven great single movements predominantly in the sequence: Präludium Allemande Courante Sarabande [two free dances] Gigue. These partitas canjustifiably be described as Bach?s ?ultimate? cycle of suites. As regards the artistic and manual demands it goes far beyond its ?English? (HN 100) and ?French? (HN 71) siblings that are also frequently played. It is nocoincidence that Bach only had these six partitas printed (1731) and what is more as ?Opus 1?.

Like other volumes recently issued in revised editions - Sonatas and Partitas for Violin (BA 5116) Partita for Flute (BA 5187) and Six Sonatas for Violin and Obbligato Harpsichord in one volume (BA 5240) and in two volumes (BA 5118-19) - these two sonatas have been re-evaluated on the basis of newly unearthed sources. The Fugue BWV 1026 long considered spurious appears here for the first time in a scholarly-critical edition that places Bach's authorship above reproach

This edition containing Italian (Roman) Organ music is the result of studies done at the Vatican Library in Autumn 1977. Among the numerous manuscripts found in Fondo Chigiano there are several sets of manuscripts which consist of Organ and Harpsichord music written between the years 1630 and 1640. These manuscripts are listed in G. Baronci's hand-written catalogue (1929) as Chigi Q IV 24-29. The manuscripts of Q IV 25 contain exclusively works by Frescobaldi: a partita eight toccatas three canzonas and two capriccios along with a recercare (sic.) and an incomplete Recercare Cromatico which is included as no.2 in the present publication. These pieces by Frescobaldicould have been published previously by A. Santani in XIV Composizione inedite di Frescobaldi (Rome 1940); they are not however included in Pidoux's Gesamtausgabe (published by Barenreiter Verlag). Bengt Johnsson has been daring enough to complete this ricercare which is even more advanced than the ricercare from Fiore Musicali (1635); Ricercare Chromaticho post il Credo (Barenreiter edition vl. V p. 34).

Six partitas for 2 violins, gamba (violoncello) & b. c. Bach was impressed by Reincken and arranged some of Reinckens themes from HORTUS MUSICUS (1687) for harpsichord (BWV 954, 965). The ensemble Les Cyclopes recorded HORTUS MUSICUS for the label Pierre Verany (PV 796052). Also Reinhardt Goebel recorded this music (Durata each volume: ca. 28’).
