Messen Magnificat Motetten-The Bach commentary discusses in four extensive volumes Johann Sebastian Bach’s complete sacred vocal works from a theological point of view. In the scope of previous research musicologists attempted to understand Johann Sebastian Bach’s sacred vocal works based on a general knowledge of the Lutheran church and theology. A theological equivalent to the fundamental Bach research presented by musicologists – one that would mainly draw from the contemporary theology relevant for the texts Bach set to music – has not been presented until now. Closing this gap the Bach commentary is based on extensive theological research and offers readers comprehensible insights into the Bible interpretation used by Johann Sebastian Bach in his sacred vocal works. Volume IV contains Bach’s masses Magnificat and motets. The author Martin Petzoldt was Professor for Systematic Theology at the theological faculty of the Leipzig University.

Playable piano reductions for rehearsal use are included in the main volume with a separate volume of purpose-made three-stave organ accompaniments and newly typeset orchestral material available on rental. Anton Bruckner (1824-1896). Par BRUCKNER ANTON. Anton Bruckner (b. 4.9.1824, Ansfelden, d. 11.10.1896, Vienna) didn’t have it easy. Throughout his life, the Austrian composer was plagued by self-doubt. Anton Bruckner came from a simple, rural background. After the death of his father, he was accepted as a choirboy at the monastery of Sankt Florian in 1837. After several years as a school assistant and his own organ and piano studies, he first worked as organist in St. Florian, then from 1855 as cathedral organist in Linz. Introduced to music theory and instrumentation by Simon Sechter and Otto Kitzler, he discovered Richard Wagner as an artistic role model, whom he admired throughout his life and also visited several times in Bayreuth. In 1868 Anton Bruckner became professor of basso continuo, counterpoint and organ at the Vienna Conservatory; ten years later court organist; and in 1891 finally honorary doctor of the University of Vienna. He was considered an important organ virtuoso of his era, but had to wait a long time for recognition as a composer. It was not until Symphony No.7 in E major, composed between 1881 and 1883, with the famous Adagio written under the effects of Wagner's death, that he achieved the recognition he had hoped for, even if he was reluctant to accept it given his inclination towards scepticism and self-criticism. Anton Bruckner was a loner who did not want to follow a particular school or doctrine. He composed numerous sacred vocal works, such as his three masses, the Missa Solemnis in B flat minor (1854), the Te Deum (1881-84) and numerous motets. As a symphonic composer, he wrote a total of nine symphonies and many symphonic studies from 1863 onwards, tending to revise completed versions several times over. Bruckner's orchestral works were long considered unplayable, but in fact were merely exceptionally bold for the tonal language of their time, uniting traditions from Beethoven through Wagner to folk music, on the threshold between late Romanticism and Modernism. Anton Bruckner composed about 40 motets during his lifetime, the earliest a setting of Pange lingua around 1835, and the last, Vexilla regis, in 1892. Thomas Doss has compiled some of these motets in this volume for symphonic wind orchestra. These motets show many characteristics of personal expression, especially Bruckner's colourful harmony in the earlier works, which is in places aligned with Franz Schubert (changes between major and minor; and movements in thirds). Later works are characterised by many components which, in addition to the expanded stature of the movements, include above all a sense of the instrumentation as an outward phenomenon and the harmony as a compositional feature that works more internally. Some aspects of Bruckner's work are the result of his long period of study, which familiarised him not only with the tradition of his craft, but also gave him insights into the 'modernity' of his time in such composers as Wagner, Liszt and Berlioz. Par DUFOURT HUGUES. Erewhon I image d'un monde-genèse, d'un pur espace en action. Décharges, vrilles, turbulences, saccades. Les formes s'enchevêtrent, s'encastrent, ou s'écrasent mutuellement sous la pression du dynamisme qui les soulève. La violence formelle vise à la concentration la plus dense, à l'imbrication la plus serrée. Elle brise et contracte - un formalisme du heurt et de la fracture. La percussion des peaux se prête tout particulièrement aux métamorphoses brutales - libérée de contraintes d'échelle, elle ne s'attache qu'à l'aspect énergétique du son. Avec un nombre suffisant d'instruments, on dispose d'un véritable clavier d'impulsions dynamiques: attaques sèches et abruptes, ébranlements sourds, secousses avec résonance timbrée, ou impacts mats. Rythmique, métrique, dynamique sont totalement dissociées. L'est leur imbrication forcée qui crée la tension de l'oeuvre. La mise en oeuvre consiste à articuler entre elles ces configurations explosives, en jouant plus ou moins de leurs conflits de structure. Erewhon II est un essai de stéréodynamique fantastique. Qu'adviendrait-il d'un espace brusquement saturé de toutes les figures de l'énergie, comme échappées des mailles de l'univers ? Il en surgirait peut-être un monde de pur mouvement sans limite assignable, une tourmente d'architectures tremblées, la prolifération soudaine d'une flambée d'interférences. Pour traduire l'image de cette complexité effervescente, j'ai tenté de réaliser une architecture mouvante de timbres métalliques (plaques de tôle, cymbales, gongs, tam-tams) où prévaudraient la fluence, l'ambiguïté, l'indéfini des transitions. Un jeu de glissements incessants, le recouvrement mutuel des masses sonores tendent à produire un effet de fuite indéfinie. La superposition ou l'alternance des timbres, qui creusent et soulèvent tour à tour l'onde sonore constituent un élément rythmique. Autre forme de scansion: les blocs de lumière plantés dans la masse (vibraphones, glockenspiels) se dressent dans un mouvement de surrection radicale. Dans cette oeuvre, j'ai tenté de tirer systématiquement parti des ressources spécifiques de la percussion pour métaux: modification du timbre par l'attaque, lente transformation de la couleur du son sous l'effet des roulements de baguettes douces (plaques de tôle, gongs, tam-tams), utilisation des grains de résonance (le scintillement progressif d'une cymbale), modulation des spectres dynamiques de la résonance. La percussion métallique modifie profondément les relations entre la production et la perception du son. Elle remet en question l'équilibre traditionnel (instrumental ou vocal) entre les mouvements articulatoires et les ondes acoustiques qu'ils engendrent. Il faut précisément tenir compte de ce coefficient dynamique propre aux résonances métalliques, qui donne naissance à une nouvelle classe de sons 'fluides'. Erewhon III adagio pour percussion qui traite les instruments comme des voix: gongs, cloches tubes, cloches de vache, timbales, marimba. Dans cette oeuvre, j'ai expressément tenu compte de la dynamique globale du son de percussion. Frapper un gong, ébranler un tam-tam, c'est créer un évènement énergétique avec un foyer (le choc), et une aire d'irradiation (le signal rayonné). Le temps métrique est entièrement subordonné à la durée interne de phases de résonance. De plus, la résonance d'un instrument métallique produit une forme dont le modelé s'anime d'un mouvement interne d'expansion. Elle donne à l'espace sonore une loi de croissance, de courbure, elle lui imprime une allure évolutive. Les propriétés physiques de la résonance des métaux dessinent d'elles-mêmes une géométrie expressive. J'ai tenté de tirer parti de cet alphabet de configurations fugaces, mais nettement différenciées par leur spectre de dispersion. Leur emploi contraint à une organisation spécifiée par des lois d'affinité ou de contraste. Enfin, le traitement des cloches et des gongs pose un problème harmonique particulier: on a affaire à des sons hybrides qui s'entendent tantôt comme des hauteurs définies, tantôt comme des sons complexes (paquets de spectres harmoniques), fixes en tessiture, mais sans degré assignable. D'où l'intérêt des équivoques, des oscillations, des transitions entre ces deux régimes distincts du son. Erewhon III est un paysage imaginaire, à la manière d'Edgar Poe: résurgence lointaine d'un écho rémanent. Erewhon IV avec cette oeuvre, j'ai tenté d'approcher une situation limite. Que resterait-il d'un langage dont la parole s'est retirée, d'un discours sans la communication ? Il ne subsisterait rien sans doute, sinon les indices d'un monde aboli, des traces, un souffle, une illusion sonore. J'ai imaginé à ce propos un fourmillement imperceptible, un état dynamique extrêmement ténu, formé d'une grêle d'attaques sèches et incisives sur les peaux. Cette matière est animée de gonflements très lents, de fluctuations à peine marquées, traversées çà et là de coulées métalliques diffuses. Pour modeler ces volumes accordés à leur propre pulsation, je me suis inspiré des techniques de la gravure. L'art de l'entaille sait, avec des moyens d'une précision aigüe, évoquer un lointain, un ailleurs, traduire le flottement d'un espace sans attache. Quelques traits, un dégradé de points, suffisent à susciter un jeu d'ombres, un mélange de clarté livide et de scintillement noir. Précisément, l'esprit de l'écriture musicale ne me paraît pas étranger à cette économie graphique, qui crée du flou avec de l'acéré. C'est pourquoi je me suis limité, dans cette oeuvre, à une composition de grains, plus ou moins resserrés, plus ou moins dilatés: battuto, roulements, frottements, résonances.
