The only surviving mass by Nicolai is a very important contribution to church music. It is characterized by its structural variety and its singability. At the same time it offers a genuine alternative to other settings of the Mass for worship services. The Carus Urtext edition renders the final Viennese version of this cheerful, festive mass. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2703600.

An unusual feature of this Mass is its cyclic form, a compositional principle which Mozart first introduced in his masses in this Mass in C: in the Agnus Dei (Dona nobis pacem) he reverted to the music of the Kyrie, thus giving the Mass overall musical unity. Another unusual feature of this work is its popular character. This is evident both in its catchy themes and in its relatively straigthforward musical structure. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4062600.

At the Dresden Court a motetto pastorale replaced the offertorium at the Christmas Masses, between the Credo and the Sanctus. The present work O admirabile mysterium is distinguished by its scoring, unusual for Ristori, for two soprano and two alto voices. The association with Arcadian pastoral music, a principal element of Italian nativity scenes, is emphasized by the use of flutes and oboes. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2740400.

Carl Friedrich Christian Fasch's Mass in 16 parts is remarkable for more than its unusual scoring. Inspired by the Italian church music style of Orazio Benevoli, it was composed in 1783 for the Berliner Sing-Akademie, and revised by Fasch several times throughout his life in order to adapt the score to the vocal capabilities of his ensemble. The composer destroyed all earlier compositions, which probably contributed to the legendary fame which this mass has enjoyed since the 19th century. The mass was, however, only published in 1839 - around four decades after Fasch's death. The present edition is based on the version contained in the first printed edition. In addition to modern music notation, extensive performance materials (two choral scores, separate organ part) facilitate the rehearsal of this challenging work. Score available separately - see item CA.2708300.

Leopold Mozart described KV 262, unlike Mozart's considerably shorter masses of the same period, as a Missa longa. The prolixity of some of the movements and of concluding fugues in the Gloria and Credo is indeed surprising. The full orchestral scoring also emphasizes the ceremonial character of this Mass. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5126200.

Among Haydn's over thirty settings of the Latin Ordinary, the Missa in honorem Sanctae Ursula occupies an outstanding position, which, according to the autograph, was completed on 5 August 1793. This Mass has been referred to as the most Mozartian of all his masses. With its song-like melodic character, the unity of the motivic material and the harmonius balance between festive and reflective sections this Mass is one of Haydn's most successful and inspired works. This work, which in addition to the usual Salzburg church trio includes two trumpets and timpani, belongs to the category of Missa solemnis. The popular nickname Chiemsee-Messe is bound up with the history of the origins of the work. Haydn wrote the Mass for the musically gifted nun, Sebastiana Oswald, who belonged to the Benedictine cloister of Frauenchiemsee. This work soon found widespread acceptance beyond the originally intended sphere of its origins, as is indicated by the numerous copies found in Austrian convents. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5454600.

Prelude to Mastery The Missa Sanctissimae Trinitatis was probably composed within a few weeks in the late fall of 1736, an occasion for the composition is not recorded. With this mass, the first in a series of five late masses, Jan Dismas Zelenka entered upon the phase of his masterful late works. Its spacious conception abundant in numbers, stylistic and compositional wealth, as well as its vehement, musical expressive power clearly differentiate this work from Zelenka's previous masses. This new edition is based on the corresponding volume of the series Das Erbe deutscher Musik, from which the preface and critical report also derive.Have a look into the piano vocal score. Zelenka's artistic personality, his biography and his compositional style are utterly distinctive. His style is highly experimental. Was Zelenka really one of the greatest composers of the 18th century, or only one of the most interesting? I think that he still has several surprises for us. (Schweizerische Musikzeitung)Zelenka's Masses - fine specimens of Baroque choral literature, some parts of which are set even more colorfully than in the corresponding compositions by Bach. The thirty or so settings of the Mass by Johann Michael Haydn (Joseph's younger brother) are masterpieces of their class, and were greatly loved during his lifetime. As part of its Urtext complete edition Carus now presents the Missa Sancti Cyrilli et Methodii. This composition of 1758 is an early work, still written in the baroque stylistic tradition of the southern German region, Out it also reveals subjective inspiration which separates it from many mass settings by Haydn's contemporaries. With this mass dedicated to the Slavic apostles Cyrill and Methodius it is possible that Haydn applied for a position in Brno and it actually appears as if the 21-year-old composer wanted to present a masterpiece demonstrating his skills. This mass is published here in the first edition. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5401300.

Its festive character is marked by a polished instrumentation, powerful choruses and highly expressive solo parts. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2704400.

Haydn's Missa Sancti Joannis Nepomuceni, dated 21 May 1772, is dedicated to the Bohemian martyr and patron Saint of bridges, Johannes Nepomuk (ca. 1340-1393, canonized in 1729). Despite the addition of woodwinds and brass to the three-part string section, the Mass is in a comparatively simple, compact form as was expressly required by Count Hieronymus Colloredo, Haydn's second employer in Salzburg. Even in the final sections of the Gloria and Credo Haydn forgoes not only vocal virtuosity, but also the polyphonic artifices which traditionally characterize these passages in the Mass. Like the Missa Sancti Amandi (1776), the Nepomuk Mass does not employ vocal soloists. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5031400.

Ensembles which are not large enough to tackle the great masses by Schubert will find a suitable alternative in this compact Mass of 1816, scored for small forces. In size and length (c. 25 minutes) it is like a Missa brevis. The compositional structure is comparatively simple, but without lacking any of the typically Schubertian style in harmony or melody. The wind parts added later by the composer can be regarded as optional, as the work was originally scored for just the south German-Austrian church trio of 2 violins and organ. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4065800.
