Nine variegated Sacred Vocal Works with Orchestra by Mendelssohn have been compiled in this volume. They stem not only from various creative phases of the composer, but also in view of their vocal settings show up marked differences and thus reflect the variety of Mendelssohns creative oeuvre. One shared aspect is that all nine works remained unprinted during the composers lifetime. Only the Lauda Sion achieved celebrity; it was published with the posthumously attributed opus number 73 and took its place next to other choral works by Mendelssohn already in the 19th century. Now published within the Mendelssohn Complete Edition, it boasts a text-critically revised score available in many cases for the first time, and from which impulses for musical practice are sure to arise.

This Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy anthology contains 19 sacred vocal works in various choral and sometimes additional solo settings, with organ, harpsichord, or basso continuo accompaniment. Among these pieces composed from 1821 to 1847 are six works that were not published during Mendelssohn's lifetime. Seven of the works presented are each extant in at least one other authorized version that has also been edited here. The occasions and circumstances of their composition vary as much as their musical structures and characteristics: Several were intended for specific performances; others were written from the outset for publication.

The Bach commentary discusses, in four extensive volumes, Johann Sebastian Bach's complete sacred vocal works from a theological point of view.In the scope of previous research, musicologists attempted to understand Johann Sebastian Bach's sacred vocal works based on a general knowledge of the Lutheran church and theology. A theological equivalent to the fundamental Bach research presented by musicologists - one that would mainly draw from the contemporary theology relevant for the texts Bach set to music - has not been presented until now. Closing this gap, the Bach commentary is based on extensive theological research and offers readers comprehensible insights into the Bible interpretation used by Johann Sebastian Bach in his sacred vocal works.Volume IV contains Bach's masses, Magnificat, and motets. The authorMartin Petzoldt was Professor for Systematic Theology at the theological faculty of the Leipzig University.

Volume 19 of the Schutz Complete Edition brings together 21 very different compositions from various phases of Schutz's compositional output. The spectrum ranges from a short, two-part sacred concerto to a six-part cyclical psalm setting and large-scale polychoral concerto, from well-known works such as the Osterdialog to a completely unknown madrigalian composition, full of emotion, to a simple chorale setting. A particular challenge was posed by the ten works or versions of works which survive incomplete. Two of these, the Christmas concerto Ach Herr, du Schopfer aller Ding SWV 450a and Ein Kind ist uns geboren SWV 497, appear here for the first time in print. With both of these it turned out that it was possible to reconstruct the missing parts fully from available material. For the Ultima Verba Psalmi 23, Gutes und Barmherzigkeit SWV 95 and the two Nunc dimittis: Herr, nun lassest du deinen Diener SWV 432 and 433, the editor's reconstructions are presented, and likewise with the chorale movement In dich hab ich gehoffet, Herr SWV 446. The impressive Easter dialog Weib, was weinest du SWV 443 is one of the works which survives incomplete. In order to give an impression of how the whole work might actually have sounded in the complete form as planned by Schutz, the Appendix to the volume contains a reconstruction of the four-part vocal setting of the missing final chorus, based on the surviving figured bass. The magnificent Gesang der drei Manner im feurigen Ofen (Song of the three men in the burning fiery furnace) SWV 448 from the book of the prophet Daniel, the original source of which is lost, is critically discussed and published with various possibilities for scoring.

Carl Maria von Weber's fame rests mainly on 'Der Freischutz'. The unprecedented success of this opera overshadowed all his other works and contributed to their increasing fall into oblivion. Certain works such as 'Preciosa', 'Oberon', and 'Euryanthe', the overtures, solo concertos and piano sonatas, the lieder and chamber works enjoyed great popularity and were widely known in Germany and abroad as late as the second half of the 19th century. However, any chance of a revival of Weber's influential and substantial oeuvre was wasted in the 1920s, when a complete edition - begun by Hans Joachim Moser and with potential contributors including Wilhelm Kempff, Hans Pfitzner, Max von Schillings, Fritz Stein and Richard Strauss - failed after the third volume.Ever since there have been numerous attempts to restart a complete edition of Weber's works, but as this kind of project would have required the co-operation of scholars from both sides of the inter-German border, the political situation after 1945 was not conducive to any such enterprise. Careful negotiations led to the first tangible steps in the 1980s. The intention, right from the beginning, was to place Weber's work in context, and not to separate his musical output from his influential work as a writer, critic and organiser in the musical field, but to publish his compositions together with his letters, diaries and other literary output as the best way to document the cross-fertilisation between his musical, literary and practical activities.Since the German re-unification both working-parties concerned - at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, and at the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar, Detmold/Paderborn - have co-operated on the complete edition of the musical works (c. 45 volumes in 10 series: sacred music; cantatas, odes and other occasional works; stage works; lieder and vocal works; orchestral works; chamber music; music for piano; piano reductions; miscellanea, arrangements and orchestrations; works of doubtful attribution). The diaries (6-8 vols.) are edited in Berlin and the letters (8-10 vols.) and other writings (2 vols.) in Detmold. This complete edition aims to be a reliable basis of scholarly debate as well as for the authentic performance practice of Carl Maria von Weber's music. Conforming to the standards of recent historico-critical editions, the textual material will be based on all available authentic sources, accompanied by a detailed documentation of the genesis and a list of variants for each work. The musicological importance of the works will be evaluated by placing them in their historical context, the presentation of their genesis, history and Critical Commentaries. The letters, writings and diaries will be treated as inter-related and relevant to each other in the commentaries, therefore readers should benefit from a wealth of concise information and cross-references.

The Kleine geistliche Konzerte by Heinrich Schutz represent solo vocal music right at the height of its time, the result of his (second) journey to Italy and his encounter with Claudio Monteverdi's musico-dramatic works. Part I of the Kleine Geistliche Konzerte, published in 1636, can already by seen as a pattern book of compositions, and based on their structure Schutz was then able to set more extensive pieces. This applies even more impressively to the second book because of its often daring harmonies and more intensive declamation; the book was issued in 1639 and is now newly published in the Stuttgart Schutz Edition in the original keys and with the original order of pieces newly recreated according to the first printed edition.

When it comes to paying tribute to Heinrich Schutz's compositional achievement, in his art his treatment of the text and language must be mentioned first. The Geistliche Chor-Music 1648, a collection of 29 motets for five to seven voices and one of his most important works, is characterized by he carefully thought-out musical realization of the meaning of the text. In his detailed foreword to the collection the composer presented these as models for composition without a basso continuo - it was his conviction that very young composer should obtain the properfoundation for a good counterpoint. Despite the strict counterpoint, stylistically speaking from an earlier era, the Musicus poeticus imbued his works with a strongly expressive character. The individual motets are structured differently and they differ - according to content - in their length and character. Short, rather straightforward pieces stand alongside long, worked-out pieces with greater expressive intensity, and cheerful, optimistic works are juxtaposed with plaintive ones. Separate editions available.

This volume contains three reworkings and orchestrations of religious works by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy which were originally set for smaller ensembles (solo voices, four-part chorus and organ). They were composed at different times and for different occasions, two of them as commissions. The anthem ,,Why, o Lord, delay forever MWV A 19 was originally the sacred vocal piece MWV B 33, published in England in 1841 with the additional title ,,[…] The Thirteenth Psalm, and in Germany in the same year as ,,Lass, o Herr, mich Hilfe finden with the title ,,Drei geistliche Lieder which was composed at the suggestion of the English literature and music lover Charles B. Broadley who also provided the paraphrase of the psalm text. After Mendelssohn had refused an initial request by Broadley to furnish the anthem post festum with an organ prelude, the composer did not want to turn down a second request to orchestrate the work and he even expanded the existing material with a lengthy closing fugue involving additional trumpets and timpani. The ,,Ave Maria MWV B 19 was written in connection with Mendelssohn's appointment as municipal music director, a position which at the same time included the responsibility for the musical organization of church services. The instrumentation of the work with an accompaniment of two clarinets and two bassoons as well as low strings was due to the fact that the organ in Dusseldorf's principal church St. Lambertus was out of order for an extended period of time, and Mendelssohn considered this solution explicitly only as a surrogate for the organ should there be none. A further psalm paraphrase in English, this time by William Bartholomew, of the hymn ,,Hear my prayer MWV B 49 was set to music in early 1844; the orchestration of the organ part commissioned by the distinguished Dublin musician Joseph Robinson was not completed until 1847 so that the premiere finally only took place after Mendelssohn's death. In the further course of the century ,,Hear my prayer would, particularly in the version with organ accompaniment, come to enjoy great popularity in Great Britain and Ireland.

The year 1828 was a Durer Year (300th anniversary of death), and the Berlin Durer Festival was looking for a suitable composer to write the festival cantata. The renowned Carl Friedrich Zelter turned down the offer and recommended his pupil instead, the 18-year-old Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. He accepted, and, within a few weeks, the Festmusik MWV D1, was finished, his first full-scored sacred vocal work. Mendelssohns Festmusik subsequently fell into oblivion despite its much-applauded world premiere. The specific context and the rather wooden libretto most likely proved too prohibitive even though the young composer had given his best. This can now be confirmed for the first time by consulting the new printed edition.

Volume 3 of the Complete Edition contains the Mass in A minor op. 197, which was the last work Rheinberger ever composed. The Mass was left unfinished, since he died while working on it. Only the Kyrie, Gloria and the Credo, through the et resurrexit were completed. However the remainder of the Credo has been preserved in the form of sketches. These are published in the present edition for the first time. In addition, the sketches were carefully completed and prepared for performance by the editor. This version is published in the appendix of this volume.

Today the Cantiones sacrae (1625) remain in the shadow of Schutz's much more well known motet collection, the Geistliche Chormusik of 1648. This is due on the one hand to their Latin texts and to the devotional texts which often are not taken from the Bible, and on the other hand to the highly expressive style of the Cantiones. Schutz demands that the singers be open to a highly unusual music rich with dissonances. The reward for this venture will be an extraordinary depth and expressiveness and music truly beyond compare.
