As the second volume of the Edizione Nazionale delle Opere di Giacomo Puccini, a critical new edition of his compositions for orchestra has been published in the series Musical Works. In addition to the familiar Preludio a orchestra (SC 1), Preludio sinfonico (SC 32), Trio in Fa (SC 52) and Capriccio sinfonico (SC 55), the volume contains a short but unknown Adagetto (SC 51), probably a sketch of a composition from Puccini's student years in Milan. And, for the first time ever, it also includes an orchestral version of the Scherzo in La (SC 34) from 1882, a work which was just recently discovered. The Scherzo, known until now only in a version for string quartet, complements the Trio in Fa, which is scored for the same orchestral forces, to form an independent movement.

The organ is the instrument on which the young Giacomo Puccini began his career as a musician. Through the rediscovery of a considerable number of hand-written pieces, which he composed after 1870 as part of his duties as organist in the churches of Lucca, several primary sources are now available. These give an insight into the beginnings of his musical activities which have only been known about from anecdotes from his first biographers until now. Puccini's organ repertoire includes works which were typical for liturgical organ music at that time: sonatas for the main sections of the mass, versets which were substituted for Gregorian chant, marches, which were played after the mass (exceptionally even waltzes), and even a pastorale for Christmas time. This music was written with the sound of instruments made in Tuscany in mind. These have just one manual, a 8 foot Principale register and a small pedalboard always coupled to the manual. In addition there were several solo stops divided into bass and soprano.Puccini contributed with originality to the renewal of Italian organ practice, which began in his day to discard its operatic style in favor of a style more suited to the liturgy.

Puccini’s Adagetto for small orchestra (without trumpets, trombones, and timpani) was probably written in the early 1880s while the composer was still a student in Milan. A few years later he reused the work’s theme in his opera Edgar, where it appears in Act 3 during Fidelia’s aria “Addio, mio dolce amor” as she laments Edgar's supposed death. This touching piece is now available as a separate edition from Volume II.1 of the Edizione Nazionale delle Opere di Giacomo Puccini (Carus 56.002) with all orchestral parts.

Until 2014, the Scherzo in A minor was known only in a version for strings (SC 34) and its connection to the Trio in F major SC 52 was not documented. Newly found sources made it possible to identify Puccini's orchestral version of the Scherzo and to assert that in fact the Trio is conceived for the Scherzo. This edition corresponds to the first critical edition of the Scherzo in its original orchestral version and the first edition of the Trio in an orchestration completed by Virgilio Bernardoni. The Scherzo and the original versions of the Trio (Puccini's orchestration of the mm. 1-12 and the complete draft of the framework of the score) are included in the vol. II/1 of the Edizione Nazionale delle Opere di Giacomo Puccini (Works for orchestra, Carus 56.002).

An impressive early work by Puccini is finally available as sheet music: The composer wrote the cantata I figli d’Italia bella in 1877 for a competition held by the province of Lucca. The text is a paean to Italy’s brilliant artistic tradition, remembered through the country’s great artists. The cantata has a rather eventful history: Considered lost for many years, a set of parts turned up about 20 years ago in which, however, the vocal solo was missing. Subsequently, the cantata was only performed with a reconstructed solo part. Then in 2019, an anonymous and previously unattributed manuscript was identified as an autograph of Puccini. It became clear that this was the missing complete score! Now we can hear how the composer captured the text in thrilling style with solo tenor, choir and large orchestra to create a vibrant work brimming with youthful sparkle and energy.The cantata perfectly complements Puccini’s Messa di Gloria (Carus 56.001), another early work by the composer that here and there shows some operatic tendencies.
