Third Part of the Clavier Ubung-In 1739 Bach?s Third Part of the Clavier Übung was published on 80 pages closely printed. Ever since then the collection has been regarded as a high point in the history of Organ composition as it offers an impressive cross section of Bach?s artistry.This present volume is an updated edition of Volume 4 Series IV of the New Bach Edition presented by Manfred Tessmer in 1969. A fully revised edition proved unnecessary as there were relatively few corrections affecting the musical text. However the volume now includes a detailed Preface by Christoph Wolff which discusses not only the work?s genesis but also offers an up-to-datedescription of the sources. For the new engraving of the musical text page-turns were reviewed and improved.Bach?s autograph is considered lost and so the main source is the original print of the collection from 1739. In collaboration with the Leipzig Bach Archive and its database Bach Digital this new edition includes links to two important copies of the original print which contain hand-written entries by Bach himself.Any complete scholarly-critical edition of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach must in the interest of its use by researchers and performers incorporate intervening new discoveries wherever possible. From early in the 17th century until the form engaged the interest of Johann Sebastian Bach various notable German composers - including Rosenmüller Fischer Fasch and Telemann - had contributed to the development of the orchestral suite or 'Ouverture' whose name betrays its French theatrical origins. From Bach himself only four such suites have survived thanks to the diligence of C.F.Penzel a student at the Thomasschule from 1751 who made copies of Bach's MSS which he found there. Thus neither the dates nor the order of composition of the suites can be established with any certainty. As to the present suite in D major recent criticism suggests that it mayoriginally have been written for strings only and dates in its final form from around 1731. Penzel's copy of the suite includes significant variants to be played by a solo violin (marked Violino Concertato) which are included here in the Appendices.The score is newly-edited from the extant sources consisting of sets of parts (some in Bach's autograph) and copyist's scores are preserved in the Staastbibliothek zu Berlin - Preußischer Kulturbestitz Musikabteilung mit Mendelssohn-Archiv. This edition replaces the former Eulenburg miniature score edited by Wilhelm Altmann.

Although all that survives of Bach's “St. Mark Passion” is Picander's libretto virtually all the arias and choruses can be reconstructed from “parody” versions. The original recitatives and turbae however are probably lost forever. Rather than rewriting these numbers “in Bachs's style” the editor Austin Harvey Gomme has added passages from Reinhard Keiser's setting of the Passion (a setting highly esteemed by Bach who performed it several times) thereby allowing this lost work to be performed in its entirety.
