Organ Chorales from the Neumeister Collection-Organ Chorales from the Neumeister CollectionYale University Manuscript 'LM 4708'In 1985 Christoph Wolff working at Yale University discovered a collection of 82 chorales compiled by Johann Gottfried Neumeister (1756-1840) which contained 38 compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach. They reveal great stylistic variety whose forebears stem from the Northern German organ tradition. Already these early works comprising fantasias fugues fughettas and imitative techniques employing motifs from chorale melodies bear witness to Bach?s broad compositional spectrum.This newly published volume is an updated edition of Series IV/9 of the ?New Bach Edition? from Cantata No. 147-Johann Sebastian Bach is regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time. His music is revered for its technical command artistic beauty and intellectual depth. This chorale movement is one of his most enduring works however the melody was originally composed before Bach’s time in 1642 by Johann Schop. Utilising the already existing melody Bach wrote this setting of Jesu Joy Of Man’s Desiring in 1716 as the 10th and last movement of the church cantata ‘Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben’ (BWV 147) one of the over three hundred cantatas written by the master of the Baroque period.This edition of the familiar melody which is often performed at weddings and Christian festive seasons like Christmas and Easter is arranged for SATB Chorus and Organ. All four verses of the lyrics are provided in English translation along with the original version in German.

A complete reconstruction based on the 1731 and 1744 versions of the text-In its various reconstructed and completed version Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. Mark Passion BWV 247 occupies a fixed place in the pre-Easter concert repertoire. As the third of what were originally five Passions not only was it the latest to be written it is also the most enigmatic of the known Good Friday works composed by the Kantor of the Thomasschule. The fundamental approach behind the present version of the St. Mark Passion is to attempt to get as close as possible stylistically to the performed versions of 1731 and 1744. It is hoped that in the service of church music practice this completereconstruction will thus help to transform the third of Bach’s Passion works into a stylistically unified whole.
