Tunes from the movie - Musical, melodrama, farce and comedy - well known film genres have through the last 70 years produced film songs, that deserve to be remembered, played and sung. Many of which have become beloved evergreens. Toner fra filmen contains 100 songs that explain why. Tunes from the movie - Toner fra filmen is the first Danish song book, that concentrates on songs written directly to the film medium - from 1932 until 2002. From swing music to a sailor's waltz, from rock'n'roll to rap music, and the publication contains 100 compositions and lyrics and with that the answer to why a specific film song book is relevant. The answer is quality and diversity.Toner fra filmen is a song book that is supposed to strengthen the joy of singing and the memory of everyone interested in songs and films. Predictable catchy tunes by eg. Sven Gyldmark standing side by side with surprises that have almost been forgotten by most but deserve a renaissance. Toner fra filmen is released now as the quality in the national film production makes people walk away from the television and into the darkness of the movie theatre to laugh and cry. Back at the television screen we enjoy the old Danish movies that make us wish to refresh the film songs. Most of us seldomly remember more than the refrain, and then the need to look at the score arises. The songs chosen to Toner fra filmen has of course been an integrated part of the movies' set up, but they can manage on their own. There are a lot of love songs, but there are also songs for every taste and temperament, nice as well as sexy, short, long, poetic etc etc. The book makes you want to sing and play and is at the same time a piece of Danish cultural history.

Alapa-Tarana Op.41 for Mezzo-Soprano and Percussion was composed by Poul Rovsing Olsen in 1959. Programme note: I was encouraged by the singer Jolanda Rodio to write a piece for mezzo-soprano and percussion. In my mind the idea immediately awoke associations of Indian or Arab music, in which the combination of drums together with either an instrument or voice is very common. In a solo performance (as opposed to choral and ensemble performances) the piece is called a raga or a macam. A raga or macam is a scale and at the same time a number of melodic formulas. Further more, it is a spiritual concept, a specific raga or macam expressing a specific emotion. My piece isnot based on any traditional Indian raga or Arab macam. The raga in my piece is entirely my own invention. The title is derived from Indian music, an ''Alapa being the first, unaccompanied part of a raga. Traditionally, in the Alapa the characteristics of the raga are first presented improvisationally, without strict metre, followed by a section in which the drums set in. The latter can have various forms. I have chosen a variation form called Tarana. Animals In Concert - Three pieces for Piano solo by Per Norgard. Programme Note 1. A Tortoise's Tango (1984) - dur.: 4' 2. Light of a Night - Paul meets bird (1989) - dur.: 6' 3. Hermit Crab Tango - Esperanza (1997) - dur.: 5' The pieces can be performed together or one by one. In the1980s, quite a few finds turned up in Per Norgard's music. The material could be, say, a number of song birds' equilibrist melodic lines, the overtones of the ocean surf, or waltzing themes by the schizophrenic artist Adolf Wolfli (1864-1930). Or again, as heard here, it can be the rhythms and motifs of the tango and a Beatles song (with bird), explored in three independent piano pieces that form the Animals in Concert suite, about which the composer writes: A Tortoise's Tango: The tortoise as tango dancer must presumably possess certain rhythmic peculiarities, which I have chosen to express by letting the tune of the tortoise shuffle broadly, tripartite through the strict four partite time of tango. Tortoise Tango was the original title of this piece, written for Achilles (the pianist Yvar Mikhashoff), for his so called tango project, including new tangos for piano by composers from all over the world. Light of a Night (Paul meets bird) was commissioned by pianist Aki Takahashi. It is a reworked arrangement for piano of the Beatles song Blackbird. As some of us will recall, the Beatles on The White Album let the beautiful song to the blackbird be accompanied by an (apparently) live blackbird song. It is this authentic bird-motif world that in Light of a Night weaves itself into the Beatles melody and in turn is gradually infected by it, so that a completely new third entity ensues: a kind of Bird-rock ballad (or maybe it is a Beatle-bird?). Hermit Crab Tango (Esperanza): The tango situation is quite special for a Hermit Crab. It is a well-known fact that the hermit crab - this soft animal - must run the gauntlet among the many perils at the bottom of the sea when it must move hose. I have chosen to express the angers by a tango pattern - sharp as a cactus - through which the tune, optimistic, slips to its new shelter. I have borrowed the tune from songwriter Hanne Methling's Introduction: 'I want to get through this time!' she sings in a ecstatically ascending melody line - and I believe that these words must correspond very well to the mood of the hermit crab: 'Esperanza'- the green runners of hope wind among the latticework formed by the tango rows.

Fanfare: Generation Next Fanfare: Generation Next is a piece I wrote in honor of Mr. Dean Zirkle, long-time director of bands at Camp Hill Senior High School (near Harrisburg, PA). I had been working as Dean's marching band arranger/composer for eleven years when he announced his upcoming retirement, and I felt compelled to write a piece to pay tribute to his remarkable contributions to music education and to the lives of his students and colleagues. The piece is built on two primary ideas. The first idea is a musical rendering of the name Dean. D, E, and A are all musical notes, but N is not. I have chosen to use a neighbor tone (a note a half-step above or below a given note) to finish off the name. (MUSIC EXAMPLE) This melodic idea occurs throughout the composition in a variety of transformations. Sometimes it is presented with the exact notes shown above; sometimes the interval structure is maintained, but the pitch series is transposed (G-A-D-C#, for example); sometimes the four notes are played in order, sometimes out of order; sometimes the first three notes (D-E-A) sound together as a chord; etc. (MUSIC EXAMPLE) The second idea is a rhythmic motive, established in the opening brass fanfare. (MUSIC EXAMPLE) This rhythm is later transformed to the accent pattern shown below, which is used as an ostinato throughout much of the allegro section of the piece.  .Fanfare: Generation Next Fanfare: Generation Next is a piece I wrote in honor of Mr. Dean Zirkle, long-time director of bands at Camp Hill Senior High School (near Harrisburg, PA). Inspired by Clarence Cameron White’s book The Violinist’s Daily Dozen, The Violinist’s Daily Sixteen is a collection of daily exercises compiled by Roland Vamos. Intended for student and professional violinists, the collection provides the performer with a variety of exercises for daily warm-ups. Mr. Vamos also focuses on developing dexterity and flexibility in the fingers and joints, the first and fourth fingers in particular. Each of the sixteen exercises is notated for each of the four strings, and Vamos recommends that the exercises be practiced as warm-ups, choosing a different string for each day of practice. Also included with the Daily Sixteen is a comprehensive set of studies for developing fluency with scales and arpeggios. Mr. Vamos’ unique methodology is to begin with major scales and arpeggios, followed by minor scales and arpeggios, all of which are notated in two, three and four octaves. Alternate fingers are provided, as well as a variety of slurred and mixed bowings using the three parts of the bow whenever feasible. It is a remarkably systematic approach to performing scales and arpeggios on the violin and will surely benefit students and professionals alike.ForewordThis short hand-setting set of exercises was inspired by a book entitled The Violinist’s Daily Dozen, conceived by Clarence Cameron White, a prominent African-American violinist, composer and arranger who enjoyed the bulk of his career in the first half of the twentieth century.I have practiced this set of exercises since I was twelve years old. It has served me as a superb warm-up and hand setting tool. Over the years, I have found that there are some aspects of this warm-up routine that were not given sufficient attention or not addressed at all. Consequently, I have expanded the Daily Dozen to create a new work entitled The Violinist’s Daily Sixteen.I have also paid particular attention in this work as to how these exercises are to be practiced. In exercises one and two, I have indicated some notes to be played before the actual written exercises. This is to ensure that the fourth finger will be over the string in a position ready to strike even though it is not being used. Before playing exercises three, four, nine, ten, eleven and twelve, I have indicated silent fingers to be placed on the notes they would be playing if they were being used.I have replaced Mr. White’s grace notes with notes of specific value and have slowed down the exercises so that the first joint (the joint nearest the string) of each finger can move with flexibility and strength. At no time should the first joint buckle. In Mr. White’s version, the last exercise gave the first finger some very valuable backward extensions. In this exercise (number 14 in this book), I caution the student not to move the hand along with the first finger. The hand should remain in position while the first finger independently moves back and forth. It became obvious to me that if the first finger were given the opportunity to develop the dexterity that Mr. White’s twelfth exercise emphasizes, the fourth finger could benefit from an exercise that gives it a forward extension. Consequently, I added another exercise to create a Baker’s Dozen (thirteen).Several years later, I felt that the second and third fingers should also have an exercise to further develop their dexterity…hence exercise fourteen was added to create a “Vamos Dozen.â€Because the first finger did not have sufficient practice in the development of the first joint in the original version, I have added two exercises to precede White’s fifth exercise. After re-working and re-numbering these exercises, I have come up with a total of sixteen exercises. It is my suggestion that these be practiced as a warm-up, choosing a different string each day.—Roland VamosEvanston, Illinois 2017 PrefaceScales are a means of teaching a person the fingerboard on his or her instrument. The fingers move across the strings and are required to make shifts, all in highly organized patterns. Scales and arpeggios are the foundation upon which our repertoire is built. Many scale books have been written; each one being organized in its own specific way. The Flesch Scale System has been a standard for many decades. It is very comprehensive and systematic. From the point of view of establishing similar patterns, it has one drawback: it is organized by starting with a major key, followed by its relative minor, going through the circle of fifths. I believe that it is more profitable to do only major scales with their arpeggios first, going up chromatically, and then follow them in a similar way with the minor scales. In using this approach, the similarities in fingerings between the various scales are more apparent. It is also profitable to have alternate fingerings whenever possible. My approach to scales and arpeggios includes a variety of slurred and mixed bowings using the three parts of the bow whenever feasible. These bowings are not all-inclusive. Whenever a particularly awkward bowing pattern is encountered in the repertoire, it can be practiced as an additional bowing variation in the scales and arpeggios.   I have chosen to introduce the three and four octave scales by teaching two octave scales across the strings in one position going up chromatically through seven positions; starting on the first, second, third, and finally fourth fingers in major and melodic minor.—Roland VamosEvanston, Illinois 2017.

Jazz Chords On Piano -2 by Tormod Vinsand (2017). This book is a follow-up on Jazz Chords on Piano (WH32971) and it is definitely an advantage if you have familiarised yourself with the techniques and terms used in Jazz Chords on Piano . There are many ways in which to play jazz on a piano. In Jazz Chords on Piano I describe some guidelines for how to prepare accompaniment and melody playing, but admittedly, there are of course many other ways to play or other techniques to use. In Jazz Chords on Piano - 2 I have chosen to focus on four typical techniques: Part 1 - Playing Arpeggio in left hand Part 2 - 4-stacked chords in a piano movement Part 3 - Left-hand chords Part 4 -Overlying triads when accompanying To illustrate the various techniques, I have made compositions that are stylistically adjusted so that the various techniques make musical sense and are playable. (Tormod Vinsand) Tormod Vinsand (born 1958) has a Master's Degree in Musicology from University of Copenhagen. Since 1988 Tormod has been a jazz piano lecturer at The Rhythmic Music Conservatory, Copenhagen, The Institute of Musicology at University of Copenhagen, and the Royal Danish Academy of Music, Copenhagen. The material you fi nd in this book has been used at the above three educational institutions and is primarily targeted to music students that do not have the piano as their primary instrument at these schools. But others may also benefi t from this book, provided you have an elementary theoretical background in music. Since 2013 Tormod has also been Music School Manager at the Rødovre School of Music.

Mass - for unison choir (SSA) and organ by Bendt Fabricius. From the preface: In the 1980s, I was an organist at Mosede Church, and I was so lucky here to have a talented girls' choir. This Mass for equal-voiced choir and organ is composed for my girls in Mosede. The Mass takes its textual starting point in the Roman Catholic High Mass in Latin with its five fixed liturgical links, Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus Dei. In my fair, I have chosen to translate the texts into Danish, which means that the work, both by rehearsal and performance, has the special presence that an immediate understanding of a text will always evoke. The five rates can be listed either together or separately. The movements have different degrees of difficulty, so that Kyrie and Credo are the simplest to perform, while the other three movements make greater demands, both in terms of melody, rhythm and harmonics. A major challenge in the performance of the mass will be the obligatory organ voice, which constitutes a concerted element in relation to the choir voices. The organ voice is generally accompanying, but occasionally performs solo in a way that challenges and contrasts the choir voices. Bendt Fabricius 2018.

Throughout the world Christmas is celebrated - sometimes at the end of December, sometimes at the beginning of January. And everywhere, singing Christmas carols is part of the celebrations. Some carols, such as Adeste fideles - O come, all ye faithful - are sung throughout the world, but many countries have their own particular carols which reflect their own customs and traditions. These Christmas carols from all over the world feature in the latest instalment of the LIEDERPROJEKT which is published in autumn 2015. For the song book the editors have chosen about 72 carols from over 40 countries - from Spain and Poland, from Mexico and Canada, China and Australia, Iceland and the Congo. The spectrum is wide-ranging: indispensible standards (carols, spirituals, noels) are joined by musical treasures which are largely unknown. All the songs are given in their original language and in German translation, with chord symbols above the music for easy instrumental accompaniment. The song book contains an instrumental CD to get to know the pieces and sing along with. For all the songs, one or two verses have been recorded, and different instruments and arrangements give an idea of the wide musical range. Frank Walka, who illustrated the hugely successful Wiegenlieder (Lullabies) and Weihnachtslieder (Christmas Carols) volumes for the LIEDERPROJEKT, has created 17 beautiful double-page illustrations for the song book. Audio versions of the spoken original texts, to help with pronunciation, are available at www.liederprojekt.org under each song title, and help with learning the carols.

Essays by Marie-Helene Benoit-Otis, Jean-Christophe Branger, Michel Duchesneau, Stephan Etcharry, Sarah Gutsche-Miller, Jacinthe Harbec, Karen Henson, Mara Lacche, Ralph P. Locke, Anne Monjaret, Michela Niccolai, Luca Levi SalaThe crisis of dramaturgical systems in the age of European modernism, between the end of the nineteenth century and the First World War, provoked the creation of a range of original artistic solutions until the 1930s which broke apart traditional musical genres. The quest for new forms of expression thus becomes a defining feature in modernist art. Composers, riding the wave of momentum built first in literature and the fine arts, blurred the boundaries between high and low styles, and it is in this co-existence, inherent to the new forms, that musical production found new life. Theatre studies have pinpointed this desire for artistic experimentation with Paris at its centre, the city of light, that cultural meeting ground and formidable catalyst of artistic trends. The visual spectacle produced during the forty years (approximately 1890-1930) covered in this volume has therefore been analysed in a number of different ways, deriving from the vast panorama of cultural history, interrogating theatrical materials not only from the standpoint of the <>, but also by investigating the links between high and low, mediatised culture. Musicological research applied to high art genres (song, opera, all genres of instrumental music) does not yet seem to have taken these hybrid spectacles which modify forms and genres in search of new musical and dramatic solutions into consideration, except in a few rare cases. On the other hand, new impetus has been given by a renewed interest in popular chanson and ballet. In this current volume, we have chosen to interrogate the spectacular element, that is to say the performance, as 'a text', equal in status to the music and the literary text. Therefore, the different subject areas proposed in the following chapters reveal a lesser importance of the subject material set to music by composers but a greater willingness, at the centre of this aesthetic renewal, to try out new musical forms or to adapt traditional structures to new dramatic ends.

To Nocturner (2001) - for Chamber Choir (12 or 24 Voices). Texts by Ole Sarvig and Ib Michael. English version available: KP01444E Programme note: These two choral pieces for 12 voices consists of radical recompositions on of earlier themes: in Summer's Sleep we hear new combinations of two 'Sarvig melodies' from the 1970s (one of which is now in the Danish Hymnbook under the title aret, The Year): Michael's Night is based on an earlier, simple choral song (Star Mirror,1987), now for 12 voices and composed such that an original idea of simultaneously displaced, opposite motions cf. the poem) comes out as desired. Of the Nocturnes Norgard writes: Summer's Sleep wascomposed to stanzas of Ole Sarvig's poem The Year (from the collection Forstadsdigte ('Suburban Poems')) and forms the picture of the summer of life, which is asleep - while the heaven seed waits for the summer wind (invisible to every mind). The many layers of text are expressed musically in a multilayered choral texture with 'looks' up and down through the various tempo and time-worlds: summer sleep, summer dream. The second nocturne, Michael's Night, takes its name from the author Ib Michael, whose poem Star Mirror (from the collection Himmelbegravelse ('Sky Funeral') (1986) I pushed/coaxed him to expand from one to nine stanzas. The four selected stanzas set in the nocturne focus on the pan-erotic elements of the moonlit, starlit night. With the titles I have chosen I have stressed the mythic layer of the text, the summer night not as a dream but as sensual reality. The two nocturnes are dedicated to Ivan Hansen on the occasion of his fiftieth birthday on 25th February 2003, out of gratitude for over a quarter of a century of inspiring collaboration.
