Novello New Choral Series-Why O Lord do you stand far off? was written in memory of the victims of the London bombings on 7 July 2005 questions the presence of God in times of human disaster particularly when committed by man upon his fellow man. The piece's focus lies in the two rhetorical questions first sung by the female voices at the beginning. This opening three note motif returns frequently throughout the work forever challenging the whereabouts of God's watchful eye. Recent highlights include performances at Oxford’s Sheldonian Theatre Tewkesbury Abbey St James’s Piccadilly and at the Lausanne Summer Festival by choirs and orchestras including Schola Cantorum of Oxford Commotio and The Oxford Spezzati. An Irish Blessing, a choral arrangement of a much-loved Gaelic blessing, has a gentle, lilting melody which unfolds slowly, beginning in unison and building to a fuller choral texture with a descant by the third verse. The optional flute part adds a folk-like quality and, in addition to the wide dynamic range indicated, further textural variety can be achieved with opportunities for a soloist or small group of singers. This arrangement was commissioned by Rydes Hill Preparatory School, Guildford in 2005, in the year of its Diamond Jubilee. It may be ugly the duckling but in any case it is most peculiar in its surroundings with spontaneous colorful wide painted feathers standing and looking dreamy beyond a birch in the golden light of the afternoon (a very big duckling indeed!) In 'D´Monstrantz Vöögeli' the dark nightly visions are unfolding with texts by the Swiss schizophrenic artist Adolf Wölfli (1864-1930). His transcending poems prose paintings and ideas inspired me for many compositions in the 1980s i.e. Symphony nr. 4 ('Indischer Roosen-Gaarten und Chinesischer Hexensee' - Hommage a Wölfli') The opera The Divine Circus and a series of choral works. The piece is written for 12 vocal soloists - singing whistling screaming and whispering. In 'D´Monstrantz Vöögeli' - for a choir of humans and birds - many 'found objects' are used: The tape/cd only contributes with unmanufactured birdsong - even though using full half and fourth speed so it is easier to understand and learn from the brilliant birds (especially the fantastic American Musician Wren
