The sixth volume to appear in the new Chopin edition is the Impromptus edited by John Irvine. The most famous of these pieces is of course the so-called 'Fantaisie-Impromptu'. Because Chopin suppressed its publication during his lifetime for some reason this work has suffered more than most from the editorial 'free-for-all' that disfigured most Chopin publishing for at least a century after his death. In the last fifty or so years propelled by Arthur Rubinstein's discovery of an autograph score the situation has improved markedly and the new Peters volume is able to reflect the very latest source scholarship both for this and the other Impromptus.

Frederic Francois Chopin: Ballades et Impromptus (Piano solo).
SKU: BT.PWM12152020
Based on reprise form. The central section is characterised by the cessation of movement and effusive lyricism. However, the outer parts, though full of movement, weave long-breathed arabesques with tranquility resulting fromrocking uniformity and abstract dance. The sound world of the impromptus sound is bright, subject to euphony and beautiful rhythm. Critical source-edition edited by Jan Ekier and Pawel Kaminski based on manuscripts, copiesapproved by Chopin himself, and first editions. Its purpose is to present the works of Chopin in authentic form. The miniature version of the National Edition does not contain source commentary or performance notes.
