Tandis que le premier d???entre eux date vraisemblablement de 1837 l???op. 36 fut compos? en 1839 et l???opus 51 trois ans plus tard pendant le s?jour de Chopin au domaine de Nohant appartenant ? l????crivain George Sand avec qui il entretenait une relation amoureuse. Le num?ro d???opus de la Fantaisie-Impromptu op. 66 est trompeur car elle fut compos?e en 1834 soit avant les trois autresimpromptus. Chopin n???avait manifestement pas pr?vu de la faire publier mais son ami Julian Fontana se chargea de le faire apr?s la mort du compositeur. La version imprim?e d?note toutefois des diff?rences tellement importantes par rapport au manuscrit autographe heureusement conserv? que l????dition Henle-Urtext reproduit les deux versions.

In autumn 1827 Schubert composed eight 'Impromptus' for publication as a complete collection by Haslinger in Vienna. When the plan fell through Schubert offered his 'Impromptus' to Schott as pieces which 'could be issued individually or all four together'. The name of the works probably originated from the publisher Haslinger and Schubert also used it for his collection published later as op. posth. 142. The lyrical-romantic works are suitable for advanced piano students and have the character of sonata movements. Robert Schumann who regarded them as parts of a four-movement sonata drew attention to the second collection published by Diabelli in 1839 in hisreview.For the first time this scholarly-critical Urtext edition presents the musical text of the 'New Schubert Edition' in new engraving and with optimum page-turns. Impromptus-Frédéric Chopin is known worldwide as one of the leading musicians of the Romantic era. The musical text of the 'Impromptus' is based primarily on the composer's autographs as well as on a copy of the Witteczek-Spaun Collection which was very important to Schubert. As no autograph sources for the 'Moments musicaux' exist, the first and early editions of individual pieces were used as reference material. Due to this painstaking research these editions are very precise, not only with regard to musical details but also with fundamental issues like the position of repetition signs. Franz Schubert's Impromptus and Moments Musicaux for Piano. This volume contains 14 pieces consisting of two collections of four Impromptus (op.90 D899 and op. post.142 D935) and Six Moments Musicaux (op.94 D780).

The Piano runs through Jean Sibelius's oeuvre like a red thread. After some first student pieces he composed the Sonata op. 12 (EB 8142) in 1893 and his first cycle of Piano pieces the Six Impromptus op. 5. Here the Finnish composer self-assuredly takes up a great romantic genre significantly shaped by Schubert and Chopin. Sibelius draws inspiration from some of his own early works in this composition yet he also uses the last two pieces from opus 5 as the groundwork for an autonomous 'Impromptu' for string orchestra which he put together shortly after completing the Piano pieces. 'You must judge me on the basis of my orchestral works. The Piano does not interest me. Itcannot sing ' said Sibelius. Yet how seriously can we take this famous quote when considering how masterfully he crossed the boundaries with his Impromptus? Pianists such as Ralf Gothoni Glenn Gould and Olli Mustonen have not let themselves be deterred by the composer's harsh self-criticism and with their interpretations have provided compelling proof of the opposite. 

The sixth volume to appear in the new Chopin edition is the Impromptus edited by John Irvine. The most famous of these pieces is of course the so-called 'Fantaisie-Impromptu'. Because Chopin suppressed its publication during his lifetime for some reason this work has suffered more than most from the editorial 'free-for-all' that disfigured most Chopin publishing for at least a century after his death. In the last fifty or so years propelled by Arthur Rubinstein's discovery of an autograph score the situation has improved markedly and the new Peters volume is able to reflect the very latest source scholarship both for this and the other Impromptus.
