An Album of Twenty French Songs arranged for Bassoon and Piano by Martin GattFauré??s poignant love song Après un rêve exists in many different transcriptions for various instruments (the most famous version perhaps being the one for cello and piano that Pablo Casals made in 1910), and provides the initial inspiration for this album of French songs transcribed for bassoon and piano. The bassoon is capable of a broad range of timbres and expression, and it is the lyrical, vocal quality of the instrument that Martin Gatt has always been attracted to. In both his performance and teaching, his emphasis is on the importance of what he calls ??vocalising?? through the bassoon, and for him, music for the voice ?? especially art songs of the 19th and 20th centuries ?? has been a rich source of material for exploring the expressive tonal colours of the bassoon. The treasure trove of French art song from composers ranging from Claude Arrieu to Louis Vierne, not to mention the greats like Berlioz or Debussy or Ravel, has made the task of choosing which songs to include in this album a difficult one. In the end, Martin has settled on eight composers who have produced some of the most appealing music in the genre ?? Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921), Georges Bizet (1838-1875), Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894), Jules Massenet (1842-1912), Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924), Henri Duparc (1848-1933), Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944), and Francis Poulenc (1899-1963). Rather than grouping by composer, the songs are set out in a way that contrasts different emotional worlds and sentiments, from the vibrant exuberance of Chabrier??s L??île heureuse to the gentle melancholy of Poulenc??s Mais mourir. These ??songs without words? for the bassoon, clearly demonstrate the instrument??s cantabile qualities, varied nuances, and wide-ranging emotional possibilities.

Singer Serenad Bagcan and Fazil Say recorded ten songs on texts by the most famous Turkish poests for the CD album Ilk Sarkilar (First Songs) in 2013. In these early compositions, Say lays the foundation for many melodic elements of later large-scale works such as the Nazim Oratorio and the etin Altiok Requiem. The style of these songs resembles French chansons and evokes a feel of world music. The cycle also makes for a rewarding collection of piano pieces when played without a singer. Songs are in Turkish. Introductions are in Turkish, German, English, and French.

Yvette Guilbert (1865-1944) was primarily a French cabaret singer and actress of the Belle Epoque. Clearly a highly talented musician, Guilbert also composed herself, such as her 10 Songs based on writings by Paul de Kock. Guilbert's 10 Songs are highly romantic in nature, with harmonisation by Madame de Faye Jozin. Each of the ten songs vary in characteristics. For all aspiring vocalists, Guilbert's 10 Songs are a delightful addition to the repertoire..

Throughout his career, Camille Saint-Saens composed nearly 150 songs. A short while before his death, in 1921, he bade farewell to songwriting with the delivery of Trois Vieilles Chansons. Along with the Cinq Poemes de Ronsard, composed in the same year, this final collection shows Saint-Saens returning to the poetry of the 15th and 16th centuries, a source from which Charles Gounod, Georges Bizet and Jules Massenet had already drawn.

The name SAM-Klang takes the three voice parts from the arrangements -- Soprano, Alto and Men -- and combines it with the Scandinavian and German words for “sound” to create the portmanteau word “sound together” or “harmony.” The series offers basic and advanced choral repertoire. In addition to new repertoire and new arrangements, you will also find essential parts of the classical German, Scandinavian, French and English SATB repertoire, carefully and considerately reworked for SAM. The arrangements retain the characteristic features of the original movements and have almost the same richness of timbre, resulting in works which sound nearly unchanged to an audience. Piano reductions of all choral movements facilitate rehearsal preparation. The arrangements offer development opportunities for all voice sections, bringing new life and new quality to SAM choir work. SAM-Klang enables youth choirs to gain access to classical choral literature and ensures that mixed choirs who face challenges in finding singers for all male voice parts continue to have access to well-loved repertoire.

The Codex J.II.9 is a volume of 159 large-framed folios of richly decorated parchment. It is composed of 302 pieces, polyphonic for the most part, belonging to very different types in both the sacred and secular fields. The present volume offers diplomatic transcriptions of the first 30 virelais and rondeaus of the last booklet of J.II.9. Although the exact date of the compilation of the pieces in this codex is not known, we do know that it was probably part of the dowry provided by Anne de Lusignan for her marriage to Louis de Savoie in 1434. Cyprus was then under french domination and the style of the songs that we find here often evoke the style of the Burgundian songs of the first third of the 15th century. This manuscript has the particularity of having no attributions or concordances: all the pieces are unicae and anonymous. The musical styles of the songs are varied, alternating pieces of simple construction in the manner of the 3 part Burgundian song of the first third of the 15th century, with examples of the most refined and elaborate types that can exist.

In many parts of the world, Advent and Christmas carols have become part of the standard repertoire of popular songs, and this tradition has also produced a large number of such songs in German-speaking countries. These include not only folk songs, some of unknown origin, but also art songs in various styles, as well as movements from popular classical Christmas works. This diversity is reflected in this first volume of German-language Christmas carols, which brings together carols from a broad range of eras, origins and styles. The name SAM-Klang takes the three voice parts from the arrangements -- Soprano, Alto and Men -- and combines it with the Scandinavian and German words for “sound” to create the portmanteau word “sound together” or “harmony.” The series offers basic and advanced choral repertoire.
