Haydn's Concerto for Trumpet (Concerto per il Clarino) in E-flat major was written in 1796 for his friend Anton Weidinger. Weidinger invented a keyed Trumpet which could play chromatically. Work for Chamber Ensemble dating from 1989. The composer writes: The Title SHADOWLAND refers on the one hand to a blurred 'Landscape' of shadows, where small shadows are formed behind other shadows, and where the outlines are constantly disintegrating. On the other hand, the title refers to the fanciful and unreal landscapes I felt in the music while I was writing it. SHADOWLAND has four movements, with proportions 4-7-4-3. These proportions can be found on various levels, from the smallest cell to the largest form. The first movement is divided into four parts which have exactly the same proportions as the whole pjece, and behind the fastrunning melodies and trills that dominate the whole movement one can hear, in the second, third, and fourth parts, anticipations of the second, third and fourth movements respectively. The second movement begins at the edge of silence with almost unperceptible glissandi and indistinct chorales. Gradually the hushed landscape is drowned out by sudden expressive melodic outbursts and ends with violent dance rhythms. The third movement is built up of clouds of staccato tones and is a further development of the pointillistic ideas from CLAIROBSCUR. In th last movement the horn plays a long soloistic melody line which the other instruments imitate and echo. These echoes swamp the horn line from time to time. SHADOWLAND was commissioned by and dedicated to The London Sinfonietta.

Bertold Hummel composed the Concerto for Bassoon and String Orchestra first with the basset horn as solo instrument before arrangingit for bassoon at the suggestion of Eberhard Buschmann. The piece is characterized by the use of French folk-song melodies which areintegrated into their own thematic material. In the first movement, Prologue, the solo instrument stands out while declaiming in a recitative-like manner. The second movement, Concerto, follows the meaning of the word 'concertare' = 'compete' by combining the soloist and the string ensemble 'competitively' to form a unified whole. The short epilogue is a fading away, with strictly alternating solo instrument and strings. Bassoon with piano reduction.

Dedication for chamber orchestra by William Bolcom was written in 2021-2022, especially for the ROCO Chamber Orchestra. The commission was the result of a meeting between Alecia Lawyer and the composer at a Great American Songbook concert, hosted by Arthurand Shelley Gottschalk. Dedication is a concise but dramatic work. Its threepart is determined by tempo and motif. The work begins with Intro: Moderato. After a very soft ostinato sounds from the depths of the orchestra, two melodies emerge: the first in the Piccolo and Eb Clarinet, the second in the English Horn and Bassoon. They are complemented by strings in close harmony and lyrical muted brass. This is followed by Feroce! which engages the tutti ensemble in a cascade of brilliant fortissimo block harmonies. The next section, Allegro molto, is characterized by agile, virtuosic passage work and brash chords. Tempo I returns with familiar motifs wrapped in six sharps. Marked espressivo e cantabile, tutti strings provide an incandescent conclusion. Then soft string glissandi allow the music to fade back from wherever it came. Dedication is orchestrated by his former student Edmund Cionek.

Bent Sorensen SINFUL SONGSThe first ideas for this piece came to me during a train journey through Denmark. It was summer and I was looking out of the window; I heard some fast jig-like dance rhythms. These appear early in the work - hushed and hidden like almost all the music, apart from the roaring horns in the beginning!As is always the case for me, the title was there at once - and as always it is difficult for me to explain it! The work is filled with little songs and fragments of melodies - some of them distinct, most of them hidden - but whether they have ended up becoming particularly sinful, I don't know.The musicians are positioned in a circle around the audience, so the music will not sound the same at any two different points in the hall. The music moves at varying speeds both around the circle, and backwards and forwards between different instrumental groupings.SINFUL SONGS was commissioned by and dedicated to the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group.Bent Sorensen.

Peter Hope's Recorder Sonata is the most substantial piece in his growing body of work for the recorder, published by Forsyth. Hope has written and arranged for many internationally known names, including Jose Carreras and Kiri te Kanawa, and other composers including John Williams and James Horner.
