Six Recorder Sonatas. At the beginning of the 18th century, the recorder enjoyed great popularity as a solo instrument for amateurs. Among these were also the princesses of the English court, for whose musical entertainment and training Handel?s six recorder sonatas were probably written in 1725/26. Only four of them appeared shortly thereafter in print and thus also reached a broader audience; the other two were first discovered for the recorder in the 20th century. Thanks to their melodic and rhythmic incisiveness, the pieces, whose recorder parts are relatively easily mastered, number among the most beautiful written for this instrument. Owing to wide-ranging bass lines and copious figures, the continuo instrument requires a rather well-versed player. In the score of the Urtext edition, Ullrich Scheideler provides a moderate continuo realisation; the additionally available performance score (HN 1574) with figured basso part offers the advanced musician latitude for his/her own improvisation.

This sonata can be regarded as a recorder sonata for it is part of a manuscript which originated in France around the middle of the 18th century and contains recorder compositions by Belgian French and Italian composers.

These recorder sonatas by Gottfried Finger have been copied from an edition by the London publisher John Walsh. They are pretty pieces very similar in form and invention to the recorder sonatas of Daniel Purcell (cf. ED 3693 and 4732) and from the same period. They are moreover just as charming and just as easy to play.

Two of Telemann's finest Sonatas from his Essercizii Musici for Treble Recorder and Basso continuo. Editor Waldemar Woehl also realized the figured bass. The 1st and 2nd movements of Sonata in D Minor TWV 41 are included in the ABRSM Flute Grade 6 Syllabus.

Dario Castello: Sonata Concertata for two Descant or Tenor Recorders and Continuo

J.S. Bach: Sonata in F Major for Treble Recorder and Continuo edited by Ute Deussen (after Sonata in E Major for Flute and Continuo BWV 1035).

Until recently Sammartini's known compositions for recorder consisted of the Concerto in F for Descant Recorder and some editions of his Trio Sonatas are scored for two Treble Recorders and Bass. However the discovery of two sets of solo sonatas attributed to Sammartini has brought to light a wealth of music for the Recorder a selection of which is given in this excellent edition.

The Trio Sonata HWV 405 was almost certainly composed during Handel’s years in Italy 1707-1710 and is therefore a relatively early work. Only in recent years has a complete text of this sonata been established.
