In the extensive œuvre of French composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier, the Marian Antiphons take pride of place among the smaller sacred works. He devoted himself to them for almost 25 years while working in the Italian-influenced circle of the Duchess Marie de Lorraine (known as Mademoiselle de Guise) and later in the service of the Paris Jesuits. This volume contains settings of the Salve Regina and the Ave Regina caelorum for two sopranos, mezzo-soprano, and basso continuo.

This setting of Ave Regina c''lorum (Hail, O Queen of Heaven), one of the four Marian antiphons with origins in the 4th century, is ajoyous work for upper voices, suitable for children's or women's choirs. It is full of energy and, although it is largely homophonic, the rhythmic interplay between the parts creates interesting textures which combine with Arnesens recognisable, beautiful harmonic language. The jubilant outer sections contrast with a slower, more mysterious middle section where the text speaks of the Virgin Marys beauty. A joy to both sing and listen to, this new piece will make an attractive addition to a concert or service.

This Marian antiphon survives in autograph score among the manuscripts once in Vivaldi's possession, today preserved in the Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria di Torino. It was evidently originally a four-movement work composed, possibly in 1726, for the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice, but the openingtwo movements, which must have occupied one or more separate gatherings, are lost. In these circumstances, a reconstruction of the complete work is not a worthwhile proposition, and the edition is therefore presented as a fragment. Its vocal part was notated by Vivaldi in the tenor clef, which was used at the Pietà by a number of singers among the figlie di coro who, in today's terms, would be classified as “low (or second) contraltos”. The score is of particular interest for featuring two parts named “Trombe” that are almost certainly not for brass instruments but for “violini in tromba marina”: specially adapted violins with only three strings anda distinctive bridge designed to mimic the raucous, rattling sound of a tromba marina.

Hungary has a thousand-year-old tradition of reverence for the Virgin Mary. In the course of the centuries the Church has found more and more occasions for the celebration of Mary. The greatest is the celebration of Mary?s assumption into heaven, which coincides with the anniversary of the death of Saint Stephen, on August 15. The texts of these choral works originate from various supplicatory prayers from the office, vocal texts and hymns. The six choral works don?t form a cycle, since the texts are associated with different liturgies. The choruses: Regina caeli ? antiphon for Easter, Sub tuum praesidium ? antiphon, Maria Mater gratiae ? short hymn, Ave Regina caelorum ? antiphon for Lent, Ave maris stella ? Hymn to Mary, Virgo parens Christi benedicta ? responsorium, can be sung singly or in any combination.

On account of its unusual instrumental scoring for continuo and two solo alto trombones, Cassati's setting of the Marian Antiphon stands out among the wealth of such settings. The piece is by all means recommended for use in both worship services and concert.

Matsushita's composition draws on elements of the Gregorian antiphon. It begins in unison Gregorian chant, as was typical of Renaissance motets, and the beginning of new lines of text are also derived from Gregorian material. Matsushita juxtaposes a syllabic, rhythmic declamation with this melody, constantly alternating bars with even and odd numbers of beats, the octave C' - C'' constantly repeated by the outer parts and leading towards the climax at the text nomen Jesu. After ascending D major arpeggios, the central word Jesu radiates into F sharp major, the following repetition in the compass of an octave on C is more tranquil, ending peacefully with an F major chord, ppp.
