Texts: Latin and EnglishPublisher: Boosey & HawkesDifficulty level: 3The Ceremony of Carols is one of Britten's best-known and most-performed works. It is a brilliantly conceived and dramatic concert work which sees the voices process to their places singing unaccompanied plainsong and, at the end, processing out again to the same chant. These movements can also be accompanied but strictly only if the voices do not process. The final Alleluia can be repeated as many times as necessary to get the singers to and from their destination. The carols are for three-part children's voices (though, of course they can be sung by female adults as well) and they form a two-part work around a central Interlude for harp which is based on the plainsong from the Procession. Variety is the key word here as all the carols have such individual identities. The forthright Wolcum Yole!, the deliciously lyrical There is no Rose, the swinging Balulalow, the fiery and dramatic This little Babe all contribute to a work which is a feast of discovery throughout. Lovely solos and duos add further colour and the harp part, an inspired choice of accompaniment, enriches, colours and surrounds the voices with its pictorial musical imagery. If anything shows Britten's genius for writing for voices it must be this work. The challenges here are in creating a real equality between voice parts, fielding a confident pair of soloists, and making the most of the wonderfully colourful poems Britten has chosen to set. Pronunciation is not really an issue, but when I recorded this work with the Finzi Singers I decided to follow the example of Sacred and Profane and use authentic medieval pronunciation for which an expert coach was necessary. It brings an added element of colour to a familiar aural experience.Duration: 22 minutesPaul Spicer, Lichfield, 2011.

With the publication of the first collective, scholarly edition of the a cappella works of S谩ndor Veress (1907-1992), the publishers were paying a long-standing debt in the Veress centenary year. Volume I contains all the already published works for children s, female and male choirs, together with those of the works of his mature period preserved in manuscript which have attained their definitive form: seven choral cycles or suites, and five single-movement works. The musical concept of the mainly 3- or 4-movement Hungarian folksong suites and cantatas is closely akin to that of the composer s instrumental folksong series written at the same time. Also included in thevolume are a musical setting of S谩ndor Pet fi s poem Orb谩n and arrangements of two Swiss folksongs and a children s song of American origin (Mary had a little lamb).

The composition for eleven homogeneous choirs was written between 1989 and 2005. These pieces, easy to sing but written in the present-day musical idiom, can be performed by either children?s or female choirs. All the eleven pieces are short, 2-3 minutes in duration, forming a unified composition, but it is important that the varying characters, which reflect the text, should always be recognizable. The pieces may be sung separately or in any desired grouping.

The number of choral works by Nino Rota published by Schott is increased by the first edition of 'Custodi nos, Domine'.The quiet work with its beautiful sound for two-part children's or female-voice choir with organ accompaniment (without pedal) is headed 'Semplice, con fervore'. There are no major rhythmic or musical difficulties, an aspect that will certainly be welcomed by small choirs or choirs with only little performance practice. The piece can be used both in church services and for performances in church concerts and sounds great even in small rooms.

Enjott Schneider, professor of music theory and film composition at the Munich Academy of Music, is one of the most versatile composers of our time. His oeuvre ranges from classical choral and instrumental works via the opera to musicals and film music. At the age of 19, Schneider got his first job as an organist and has since felt connected to church music as well. His work Rorate caeli is based on the Gregorian responsory of the same name. Originating in the 17th century, this chant was handed down from France and is characterised by its fresh melody and simplicity. In this work, Schneider skilfully combines old and new elements of music. He sets the Gregorian chant as a canon, giving it a light and joyful character which is contrasted by a dark organ sound with a mystic undertone, heralding the great secret of Advent. An interesting work that expresses the joyful anticipation of, and the secrets of Christmas.
