This series of easy piano music for teaching purposes presents pupils in the lower and lower middle grades with a carefully chosen selection of well-known and lesser-known compositions by important masters. The volumes are deliberately kept small in extent, since it is more stimulating for children to change the teaching material frequently. There are four existing harpsichord books with a total of 226 compositions by Francois Couperin le Grand (1668 -1733). His works are as unknown to pianists as they are famous among harpsichord players. The grace and imaginativeness of his works lend themselves especially well to the sound of the harpsichord, which is why the piano interpretation of works by Couperin, Rameau, Scarlatti and other composers of that time has been categorically rejected. But, after all, the works of Bach and Handel were written for the haipsichord and clavichord, and no one would dare question their intetpretation on the pianoforte. In order to introduce these lmpressionists of the Baroque Era to piano instruction, the editor has added to this series a folio of both Couperin's and Rameau's (EB 8033) music. The selection of the pieces is based on two criteria: 1. relatively modest demands made on technique, 2. various musical forms of expression. The Butterflies and the Windmills are both especially typical of masterful character pieces. The demands made on technique certainly correspond to a level of moderate difficulty. The simplifications made are restricted to the artistically realized twopart accompaniment (eg. p. 4 f. and p. 8 f.) with regard to finger stretch and to the profuse ornamentation of the original. The indications for phrasing and articulation are those of the editor. The first two pieces have been precisely elaborated on in this respect to serve as a model, whereas the remaining pieces contain only suggestions. As in other folios of this series; what is here to be stressed, is the importance of working out independently the phrasing and the dynamics. Directions for this are given by the respective footnotes; these directions, however, are not obligatory. lndications pertaining to dynamics and tempo have been omitted completely; the clearly recognizable character of the individual pieces should be direction enough. The tonal possibilities of the piano should in any case be used subtly. The individual volumes are deliberately kept small in extent, since it is more stimulating for children if the literature used for instruction is changed frequently. Of all Grieg's piano music, it is the Lyric Pieces (EB 8832) that enjoy the greatest popularity. These character pieces, which are very varied in their difficulty and their length, preoccupied the composer throughout his creative life. The easiest pieces from the first three books (op. 12, 38 and 43) have been chosen for the present volume. In the musical sense, however, they are by no means light-weight. Only someone who has made the art of playing expressively in the Romantic style his own with the help of Schumann's Scenes from childhood (EB 8436) will be able to interpret this poetry filled with the soul of nordic peoples appropriately. Interpretative indications have been partly added to; fingerings and the distribution of the music between the hands have, as far as possible, been adapted to smaller hands. Commissioned by Richard Deering with funds provided by the Arts Council of Great Britain and first performed by him in October 1982 in Amsterdam. The title is the same as the Schoenberg ones of 1911 and like those pieces my title is something of an understatement. They are not musically or technically undemanding as the title may perhaps suggest. In my case these pieces were in a sense sketches for my larger scale Piano Sonata of the following year. Each piece has its own essential character, but all of them are linked in the use of common pitch material. There is more than a hint of parody in the mood of the music.

This volume contains the first experimental flights of Miklós Kocsár (*1933). It may seem surprising that the pieces do not reveal the stylistic features that typified Hungarian composition in the mid-nineteen-fifties. These finely-proportioned miniatures reflect the composer s diverse, many-faceted interests: definite tonal relations and free use of the twelve-tone scale, or even dodecaphony are all equally characteristic of them, yet their musical language is fundamentally Hungarian. The character pieces of varying length offer material for piano students to play from the upper music school level to intermediate level.Der Band beinhaltet die ersten Gehversuche von Miklós Kocsár (*1933). Es mag uns überraschend vorkommen, dass die Stücke überhaupt nicht die Stilmerkmale aufweisen, von denen die Tonkunst in Ungarn Mitte der 1950er Jahre geprägt war. Diese proportional geformten Miniaturen spiegeln die vielfältigen Interessen des Komponisten wider: Die schlüssigen tonalen Verhältnisse, die freie Zwölftönigkeit oder sogar die Anwendung der Dodekaphonie ist ebenso charakteristisch für sie, dennoch ist ihre musikalische Sprache grundsätzlich ungarisch. Die mehr oder weniger kurzen Charakterstücke bieten den Klavierschüler von der höheren Klassen der Musikschulen bis zur Mittelstufe hingeeignetes Spielmaterial.
