This work was composed as ceremonial music, as part of a march medley for the participants’ entry for the 71st National Sports Festival and the 16th National Disabled Personnel Sports Festival, held in Iwate Prefecture in 2016. The European premiere of this piece took place in December of that year, the composer guest conducting the Young Musicians from Fribourg, Switzerland. This work, fusing Japanese folk song with march music, will have wide appeal, like the sister work March-Bou-Shu, also published by de Haske Publications.Dit werk is gecomponeerd als ceremoniële muziek: het maakte deel uit van een marsenmedley voor de binnenkomst van deelnemers aan het 71e Nationale Sportfestival en het 16e Nationale Sportfestival voor Gehandicapten, gehouden in de prefectuur Iwate, in 2016. Deze combinatie van Japanse volksmuziek met marsmuziek zal veel muzikanten en luisteraars aanspreken, net als het zusterwerk March-Bou-Shu, dat ook door de Haske Publications bv werd uitgegeven. Charles Aznavour, the son of Armenian immigrants, was born in 1924, in Paris. He finally launched his singing career in France with great effort; despite his lack of star looks and less than remarkable voice. However, he had two things going for him:powerful on-stage charisma and great willpower. It took him about twenty years to reach the top but when he did, his determination certainly paid off. He became a star singer/songwriter in France and his chansons were embraced throughout the rest ofthe world as well. The typical French atmosphere that pervades his music can be clearly experienced in this medley for concert band. Charles Aznavour, 1924 in Paris als Sohn armenischer Einwanderer geboren, brachte es zu einem der größten Chansonniers Frankreichs im 20. Jahrhundert. It has been recorded by many artists including Bing Crosby, Lulu, Shirley Bassey and Julie Andrews, however it is the Ella Fitzgerald version that is best known. Son épouse meurt en 1954. Quatre ans plus tard, il est amputé de la jambe droite. Son appétit de vivre et saflamme créatrice s’éteignent. Il meurt en 1964.Cole Porter a composé de superbes chansons et comédies musicales dont certaines sont encore très appréciées de nos jours. Singapore Rhapsody is an exciting work in two movements based on popular Malaysian folksongs. The songs that occur in the first movement are Rasa Sayang eh (a love song), Gelang Sipaku Gelang (a song about community spirit), Suriram (a song about a girl proclaiming her virtues) and Di-Tanjung Katong (a love song that takes place at the Cape Katong on the southeast coast of Singapore). The second movement features Lenggang Kangkung, which literally means “The swaying of the watercress,†Katang Lompat (a moralistic song about the symbolism of the frog) and finally Kenek kenek-lah Udang (a wedding song). Each movement of this enchanting work can be performed separately but acomplete performance will be the crowning moment of any concert.
