One day, when driving through West Virginia, I happened
to hear this hymn on the radio. I had always liked it,
but it had been a few years since any church I was at
sung it, so I’d forgotten the title. Unfortunately,
at the end of the tune, no announcement was made, and I
was left racking my brains, wondering, “What was that
tune?”
Fortunately, a few weeks later, it was one of the
selections at Temple Baptist Church in Fredericksburg,
VA. I circled it in the bulletin and made this
arrangement shortly thereafter. Lyrics as rousing as
“Sound the battle cry! See, the foe is nigh! Raise
the standard high for the Lord!” deserve a stirring,
spirited setting, and I hope this arrangement does
justice to the tune.
