Questa bella melodia fu adattata nel 1609 da Praetorius dal manoscritto "Puer Nobis Nascitur" del XV sec., di Trier, ma essa può avere radici popolari ancora più antiche. I versi originali in latino furono sostituiti nel 1736 da Charles Coffin e tradotti in inglese da John Chandler, ca 1837.

More lovely than the noonday light?
’Tis sent to announce a newborn king,
Glad tidings of our God to bring.

’Tis now fulfilled what God decreed,
“From Jacob shall a star proceed”;
And lo! the eastern sages stand,
To read in heav'n the Lord’s command.

O Jesus, while the star of grace
Impels us on to seek your face,
