Lucky Luke has been the quintessential French/Belgian comic book cowboy since inception in 1946. Portrayed in hardbound volumes called bande dessinées, Lucky Luke (pronounced Lewky Lewk) battles assorted historical villains of the 19th century American West. The plots are convoluted, highly satirical, and a load of fun for all ages. Luke has a horse named Jolly Jumper, but alas no sidekick or sweetheart. Fittingly, the final panel in all the volumes has Luke riding into the sunset saying "I'm just a lonesome cowboy..." in English, no less.
