Dixit Dominus is not only Handel's first important church work, but it also exceeds the scope and design of both of his other Latin psalm settings. Although the exact time and occasion for the first performance is not clear, today the universality of this work make it ideal for use in festive worship services or in concerts. With Dixit Dominus Handel's complete Latin psalm settings are now available from Carus-Verlag in critical editions. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5523200.

Dixi t Dominus (Ps 109), a psalm setting for double choir, is one of Vivaldi's most significant sacred works. In it, he takes up the old Venetian polychoral tradition, combining its compositional techniques with those of the instrumental concerto, the cantata and the opera. The broadly conceived cycle of movements, consisting of eight psalm verses and the doxology, is characterized by an expansive arch of tonalities connecting the two framing outer movements in D major (these are also thematically related): Dixit Dominus and Gloria Patri. The contrasting and varied inner movements are perfect examples of Vivaldi's skill in vividly portraying linguistic figures in music. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4000700.

Joy instantly abounds as the well-edited keyboard introduction sets the tone for this impressive, yet approachable Baroque selection---the first movement of Vivaldi's masterwork of the same name. Choral phrasing is obvious, as we alternate between brief marcato statements and longer lines that deliver satisfying suspensions. As always, Dr. Liebergen includes an informative editor's note and a complete IPA pronunciation guide for the Latin text (eight words in total). This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.
