Twelve symphonic cellos form the string group in Aribert Reimann's opera The House of Bernarda Alba, which earned the distinction of Best first performance of the year 2000. Solo II may be seen as an echo of the operatic work for chamber ensemble. Composed for the Emanuel Feuermann Grand Prix, this piece full of tensions calls for a great breadth of technique from the player. Rapid runs and repetitions are required, in addition to polyphonic playing and achieving a balance of sound with numerous sul ponticello effects.

“More than 20 years ago I was called upon by friends, artists, and aficionados to write about fingerings for the violoncello,” then-famous Berlin cellist Jean-Louis Duport thus opens his “Essai” from 1806, dedicated to “Professeurs de Violoncelle.” His methodology revolutionized cello technique, and the 21 etudes printed in its appendix are still regarded today as perhaps the most important set of studies for all budding cellists. Modelled after the volumes of etudes for violin, Henle is also issuing the Urtext here, together with all original fingerings and bowings, while also offering alternatives by the famous cellist and teacher Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt. This edition also offers a second cello part provided by Duport for accompaniment.

Hummel's piece for solo violoncello and 13 strings follows Hermann Hesse's famous poem 'Stufen' ('Steps') with regard to form and content. Hummel, a cellist himself, arranges the solo part with playing techniques and tone colours that are typical of the instrument. The work begins and ends with a perfect fifth which sets a clear, concise motif. Short phrases in distinctive bowing patterns and harmonics determine the intensive dialogue between solo instrument and the group of 13 string instruments. At the end, the tension leads to an all-explanatory B-A-C-H theme: an unmistakable homage to the old master.

Signs, games and messages are compositions of differing length, written for different occasions: musical letters, tributes, playful games with instrumental technique. In the past year pieces for violin, viola and for string trio have been published in this series.

Barbara Heller's duet 'Herbstmusik' [Autumnal Music] for cello and piano is a short piece of 5-6 minutes' duration which is as vibrant and colourful as the season itself and a welcome addition to the repertoire for this combination of instruments. Graded at intermediate level, it is also a suitable extension to the contemporary repertoire for advanced young cellists and for playing in youth music competitions (age range 11-16).This piece only requires players to use the first four positions plus harmonics. Fingerings and bowings were added in collaboration with the cellist Katharina Deserno from Cologne. An improvised solo cello cadenza may be added, starting from the Bb with fermata in bar 88. This might draw on the musical material in the preceding bars 85-88, possibly making use of motifs and playing techniques already featured in the piece, such as 'col legno' or 'pizzicato' - but no limits should be placed upon the performer's imagination.

The title goes back to the illustrated book 'Kamfu mir helfen?' by Dirk Schmidt & Barbara Schmidt. The charming story inspired the composer to write music which, according to tradition, is based on the seventh and second intervals, using the common string techniques such as scale, arpeggio, double stop and trill.Naske is one of the most successful female composers in the field of children's theatre. This is why there is a lot of theatricality combined with humour and irony in this virtuoso solo piece, which is also rewarding for viola and violoncello.

Wohlf ahrt’s Foundation Studies have long been successful tools forviolinists and violists in mastering the technical difficulties of theirinstruments. Originally conceived for a complete comprehension offirst position on the violin and viola, Richard Hughey presents thisnew edition for cello students. Transcribing these etudes for the cellopresents new challenges for the performer. Particular passages, forexample, require the student to make use of the second and eventhird positions. The fingerings chosen for these passages reflectthese shifting positions in a coherent and logical way. Trainedcomprehensively in both cello and conducting, Hughey shares hiswealth of experience and knowledge in Wohlfahrt’s FoundationStudies for the Violoncello. The violin etudes and exercises of Franz Wohlfahrt havebeen and continue to be used by violin and recently violateachers the world over. Franz was the son of HeinrichWohlfahrt (1797, Kößnitz–1883, Leipzig), a noted pianoteacher who also published many studies for piano thatwere very successful with younger students. Heinrichdeveloped a keen sense for the pedagogical development ofchildren and composed excellent studies accordingly. Withthe education of his sons Robert (1826, Weimar–deathdate unknown) and Franz (1833, Frauenpriesnitz–1884,Le ipzig), he passed these pedagogical abilities to the nextgeneration. In the preface to his Violin Studies Opus 45, FranzWohlfahrt wrote:The study of the violin presents certain difficultiesfor beginners which are frequently the cause of a suddendecrease in the pupil’s zeal and ambition, even before he hasmastered the first fundamentals. The blame for this is commonly laid on the teacher, who is called incapable or negligent; losing sight of thefact that the pupil began his studies without the slightestnotion, not merely of the difficulties to be encountered, but also of the regular and diligent effort indispensable forovercoming them.It is important, therefore, to smooth these first severitiesby showing their usefulness and making them agreeable; tothis end my Violin Method was published and the presentexercises have been written, which latter may be consideredas forming a supplement to the former. If practiced carefully and intelligently, they will serve asa solid foundation for the technique of any player ambitiousto become an artist. These studies have been successful tools for violinistsand violists to begin to master the technical difficulties oftheir instruments. Clearly conceived for a more completecomprehension of the use of the first position on the violinand similarly for the viola, presenting these etudes forthe cello presents a new challenge. As ongoing violinistsand violists can use the fourth finger to play the note ofthe next higher open string, this is not possible on thecello. To perform these exercises on the cello, particularlyreaching the “E” on the A-string, requires the studentto make use of the second and even third positions. Thefingerings chosen for these passages reflect the necessityof shifting to these positions. This is of great advantage,as a new set of studies now can be used by the studentto practice shifting to and from those positions and thusincreases technical proficiency in the second and thirdpositions of the cello.
