Many great Scottish traditional tunes such as Flowers Of The Forest can be traced back to the 17th century—a period when writing down tunes in manuscript collections for the Lute was of high interest. Rob MacKillop hascreated very playable arrangements for the Mandolin featuring 25 popular tunes from the Skene Balcarres Panmure and Straloch manuscripts. This is a wonderful collection of dance tunes and airs most of which have not beenavailable for the Mandolin until now. The notation is in treble clef with tablature for GDAE tuning. Michael Praetorius was one of a number of 16th and 17th century German musicians to use the latinised form of his name; his real name was Michael Schultz. He was a prolific composer and was much in demand by the nobility of the period to compose for dancing at the courts of Dukes. Terpsichore is the name of the Greek Muse of Dancing and Praetorius used this name as the title of his French Dances commissioned by the Duke of Brunswick and Lueneburg. Some of the tunes were obtained from theFrench Dance Masters and musicians who were in service at the court of the Duke to instruct students in the art of dancing. Other tunes he composed.

Both the Latin and the Hungarian versions of these short character pieces were set to music. Today the cello is usually considered a classical instrument but from the late 17th to early 19th centuries it was used in folk ensembles to provide low driving rhythms for dance tunes and to render haunting Scottish airs.Within the folk music revival of the past forty years there has been a small but dedicated movement to restore the unique richness of the cello to traditional music and Abby Newton has been on the forefront of that movement.
