Illum inating Journey is composed to celebrate Maestro Carl St. Clair's 25th Anniversary season with Pacific Symphony. Maestro St. Clair is one of the few conductors who has dedicated his time to new music and support for living composers. I first encountered Maestro St. Clair in 2004 when I was one of the finalists for the Young Composers Competition. After I won that competition, I had an opportunity to work with Maestro St. Clair on the piece that he commissioned for the Pacific Symphony in 2005. That's the beginning of the journey of our friendship. Illuminating Journey is inspired by Maestro St. Clair's personality and the music he loved. The piece is mainly based on the pitch material from Maestro St. Clair's name CARL which can be translated as C = C, A = A, R = Re, and L = La. That pitch material already has the character of Illuminating sound for the open 5th and octave. The piece also incorporates some musical references that have some meaning for Maestro St. Clair, such as the hopefulness of the melodic intervals from West Side Story, There's a Place for Us, composed by Leonard Bernstein, who was also Maestro St. Clair's mentor. Illuminating Journey starts with the rhythmic motion of the pitch C and moves on to create a set of pitches. The note C functions as a center for the endless energy of this piece and creates a triumphant ending. I would personally like to thank Maestro St. Clair for his dedication on my music and his friendship throughout the past 10 years. The work with Maestro St. Clair and the Pacific Symphony was an early step in my career as a composer. I often mentioned that I may not be able to come this far without that part of my life. Thank you very much, Maestro St. Clair and the Pacific Symphony. Let's celebrate our Illuminating Journey together.

The Journey attempts to musically portray the experience of traveling on an early ship, crossing the vast and tumultuous ocean to an uncertain destination. Cast in a rollicking 6/8 meter, the first theme in D minor signifies determination and perseverance, while the second theme signifies hope and faith. The music tosses and turns as the theme is passed to each section and continues to press on to a triumphant landing! We are excited to welcome the music of Brant Karrick to the Carl Fischer Music catalog.

This programmatic work depicts our superhero Daring Dog, as he goes on a journey to conquer the villain. Daring Dog is a superhero, only... not everyone knows it yet. We meet Daring Dog and his sidekick at m. 15 in the beginning section. At m. 24, we hear as his mother gives him a stern lecture to stop messing around and be more serious. Daring Dog tries to explain how he has saved the world numerous times at m. 32. At m. 42, he decides he must do what is necessary to defeat the villain, despite what his mother thinks, and begins planning. At m. 52, we can hear him running in the snare drum, and the villain approaches. Barking and growling (flutter tongue in flute, and growling in brass), at m.78 the fight is on. Measure 82 reveals a huge terrible monster, and Daring Dog is terrified. He sticks out his sword with his eyes closed, and *POOF!* the monster evaporates. (It was probably imaginary the whole time.) The end section is a triumphant celebration that Daring Dog has, indeed, saved the world again! Daring Dog is a fun piece for all ages! Difficult enough to be a wonderful recruitment piece, and easy enough to be playable by young bands, this piece can truly span all levels. Actors might also depict the story while the band plays for even more fun.  .This programmatic work depicts our superhero Daring Dog, as he goes on a journey to conquer the villain. Cosmi c Expedition takes performers on a musical journey far across the galaxy via three main sections. This fanfare composition would be perfect for opening a concert. It has bold brass fanfare figures over textural woodwinds to start and then takes the listener on a sonic journey through a variation of harmonic colors, tambural and textural shifts.Cosmic Expedition takes performers on a musical journey far across the galaxy via three main sections. The first, a rather celebratory and triumphant fanfare in Bb major begins with the upper woodwinds and percussion creating a sound-screen, that is a busy texture consisting of a flurry of repeated notes over which the horns and alto saxophones present the opening theme. The sound-screen should be carefully balanced and give way to the melody at m. 5, which should be played extremely marcato. The timpani solo beginning in m. 11 must not be understated. A brief percussion interlude separates a restatement of the opening theme, this time with the addition of the trumpet, tenor saxophone, and euphonium, and a counter melody by the low winds. The percussion interlude is playful, light, but full of vigor and energy. An Ab in the low winds pulls the harmony towards G minor in m. 40 to start the second section, a more serious fanfare. Here, the marimba repeats an ostinato that is complemented by the bass drum and woodblock. The upper woodwinds with the xylophone and snare drum dance over the stern secondary fanfare. A longing call lead by the trombones, interrupted by a subtle snare drum beckons to the clarinets and horn who begin the third section of the piece at m. 68. This haunting melody in C minor is legato, and starkly contrasts all which came before it. A relentless concert tom-tom played with hard mallets keeps the momentum persistent, and a heartbeat-like pulse is felt from the tuba and baritone saxophone. The melody rises towards m. 84 when the brass harken back to the fanfare style before fading back into another lush woodwind strain.A recapitulation of the low winds’ call is heard at m. 100 which in this occasion intensifies into an emphatic statement by the battery percussion instruments. Now in Eb major, the opening fanfare theme is heard again once more before fading into the beginning of the piece’s conclusion. To end, the counter melody from the opening section duels with chromatic tension above before swelling to an arrival in the original key of Bb major. The full ensemble celebrates the piece’s resolution, and after a few crunchy power chords the journey is completed.

Based upon the classic Christmas carol Good King Wenceslas, composer Deborah Baker Monday takes us on a historical journey that depicts the story of how Wenceslas became the good King. Deborah has created a stunning new piece that is dark and foreboding at the start, depicting the evil that was around during Wenceslas' time. But the goodness of the King wins out and the piece ends triumphantly as the carol is then brought to us as we know it: Good King Wenceslas, the man that became a saint. This exceptionally fresh and different take on a popular Christmas song is perfect for your next holiday concert.

This triumphant work by composer Alan Lee Silva will be a perfect selection for your next contest or festival performance. Atlantic Crossing contains all the signature flowing lines and warm harmonies that have made Silva's music so popular and fresh.A joyous journey across the ocean begins in the opening measures, featuring triumphant violins and violas and accented cellos and basses. After the celebratory introduction, Atlantic Crossing comes down in dynamics and transitions to the lyrical A melody in the violins (m. 9) and continues with an AAB form. The violas take over with the flowing B-theme in m. 17 as the rest of the ensemble accompanies the tune with lush harmonies at a lower dynamic. A two-measure build in mm. 24-25 with ascending violins leads back to a reprise of the powerful introductory statement where the ensemble plays full-out with precise articulations and accents. A two-measure interlude in mm. 34-35 slows the energy down to return to the legato A-theme in the violins and violas. Violas carry the B-theme once again in m. 44 with syncopated and accented answer motifs in the violins. The key center shifts at m. 53, and the violins play the melody in a legato interpretationof the introductory theme. The rest of the group plays their accompaniment figures smoothly and expressively underneath. After the molto ritardando at m. 61, the piece returns to the original key center of G. From there the group plays with driving energy as before in the introduction to the final punctuated note in m. 76.
