A l'exemple de Schubert - Ravel re-invents the waltz, inspired by Liszt, Chopin, Schumann and Chabrier, transforming the rhapsodic gyrations of the dance and sending it whirling into the 20th century.

Ravel needed only two weeks of intensive concentration to orchestrate his piano suite Valses nobles et sentimentales, which was given its premiere performance in March 1911. Consisting of seven waltzes and one epilogue, the work stamped Ravel as a creative personality whose masterpiece breathed an unbelievably new kind of musicality and incredibly intensive poetry. Let us not forget that this was twelve years before La Valse, with which it shares a number of similarities. The new edition of the complete performance material in Breitkopf's Urtext series was prepared by the Ravel expert Jean-Francois Monnard.A l'exemple de Schubert - Ravel re-invents the waltz, inspired by Liszt, Chopin, Schumann and Chabrier, transforming the rhapsodic gyrations of the dance and sending it whirling into the 20th century.

About the work ... Few American poems are as well known as The Road Not Taken. Robert Frost, the author, is an international icon, not unlike Pablo Picasso, Winston Churchill or Mark Twain in their own disciplines. The poem is full of contradictions and quirks of form and structure. Perhaps that illusiveness is part of the poem's intrigue. But beyond all of the literary devices that only a few scholars may fully appreciate, this poem has taken on a sort of fanfare for the common person credo - a challenge to individualism, stepping out on one's own, and breaking the mold out of sheer determination if nothing else. Frost connects to the core of the human spirit in just a few stanzas using the analogy of a fork in a road. The message super cedes geography, culture, race or creed. Rather, it is part of the DNA of most every person on the planet - the inner desire to feel empowered to create one's own destiny, to forge a road not taken, and ultimately in doing so, to make a difference. Rehearsal notes ... Research strongly suggests that there is a direct connection between the first rehearsal and the performance. First impressions last. I find it helpful to immediately lock three concepts into place - mechanics (notes/rhythms), text/phrasing (intent and motivation) and color (timbre). Performers need to think musically from the first reading forward (first impression). The cello is very much a collaborative instrument in this work, and should be located in front of the ensemble (not to side). Lastly, let the text speak. The simplest melodic lines are often the most exposed. Keep the voices clear and transparent, floating over the top in softer passages, and singing with vibrancy and forward focus throughout. Z. Randall Stroope A definitive recording was made by the New American Voices, with Randall conducting. This can be found on Spotify, YouTube, his website (www.zrstroope), and other social media. About the composer ... Z. Randall Stroope is an American composer and conductor. His composition teachers were Normand Lockwood and Cecil Effinger, both students of the Nadia Boulanger, the famous French teacher (and student of Gabriel Faure). He is the artistic director of two international summer music festivals, is an Honorary Member of the National Association of Italian Choral Directors, and has conducted in 25 countries. He has directed over 40 times at Carnegie Hall, and is a frequent conductor at other prestigious concert venues. An epic programmatic piece, Forged In Fire is a work of vibrant energy, vivid color and immense power. It draws inspiration from the immense power and uses of fire, and its effect on early civilization and industrialization. A calm and sensitive introductions leads to a new theme at a quickening tempo. This theme, stated simply at first, is then embellished by a driving rhythm multi-meter effect, and further developed with layered contemporary harmonies, changing textures and variations on the theme. After a breathtaking climax, the original theme is restated, more powerfully this time. It then subsides, before building to a shimmering, red hot ending that will leave your audience breathless. Certain to become a mainstay for concert and festival use. Not to be missed!

Simon Laks (1901-1983), who moved from Warsaw to Paris in 1926 at the age of 25, belonged to the large group of composers from Central and Eastern European countries who went down in 20th-century music history as the “École de Parisâ€. Slavic temperament amalgamated in their music with French esprit, the folklore of their native countries combined with the stylistic elements of neoclassicism and jazz typical of the time. As a member of the “Association of Young Polish Musiciansâ€, Laks quickly made his way into French musical life. However, his career was ended with the beginning of World War 2 due to the collaboration of the Vichy government with Nazi Germany. Internment in 1941 was followed by deportation to Auschwitz in 1942. Laks survived the Shoah as a member and later leader of a camp band in Birkenau, which he testified to in his moving book Music in Auschwitz. After the traumatic experiences, Laks did not return to regular compositional activity until the 1960s, producing an opera, songs, and chamber music works, some of which were awarded important composition prizes. At the peak of this optimistic creative phase, he composed incidental music for Peretz Hirschbein's famous Yiddish comedy Dem Schmids Techter (The Blacksmith's Daughters), which premiered in New York in 1918, for a new production of the play at the Théâtre de'lÂ’Entrepôt in Paris. Along with Prokofiev's Overture on Hebrew Themes and Shostakovich's cycle From Yiddish (Jewish) Folk Poetry, it is one of the most significant 20th-century explorations of art music with Jewish folklore – homage to a culture irreparably destroyed. From the original score, Holger Groschopp compiled two suites, for violoncello and piano and piano solo, that capture the essence of Lak's enchanting drama music. The premiere recording of the suites with Holger Groschopp and Adele Bitter was awarded the Opus Klassik 2023 in the category Editorial Achievement of the Year.

Dance of the Harlequins is a lively work that uses the harmonic progression of the famous Pachelbel Canon as its foundation. Larry Clark uses this line as a jumping-off point to create an ingenuous work that shows the many moods of the Harlequin clown, from joyous to melodramatic. When I started to write this piece I came up with the main melody first, then I harmonized it. In the process of doing that I realized that I was composing a new piece that was based on the harmonic progression found in the famous Canon by Johann Pachelbel. At first this sort of worried me, but then by doing a little research on the famous canon, I realized I was far from alone. There is even an incredibly funny YouTube video called “Pachelbel Rant†where comedian Rob Paravonian points out many of the usages of the chord progression from Pachelbel’s Canon found in many popular/rock songs. Watch it if you get a chance it is very funny! So, I decided to forge ahead and complete the piece. After the main theme begins without introduction that includes short punctuations of the harmony in the lower strings, the main theme is repeated with a countermelody playedby the violas. The cellos then take up a new B theme with the countermelody to this section covered by the first violins. The main theme with counter melody is stated one more time before it is followed by a transition to a more lyrical and augmented theme that is first presented in the violas. This theme repeats now with the melody in the first violins and a countermelody added in the violas. One more statement of the lyrical section theme is presented, but now the celli state the original main theme in augmentation along with the lyrical theme and countermelody. This is followed by an extended transition that leads back tot the B section theme now presented in the violins. After an extended cadence and build, the main theme returns one last time followed by a lively coda to complete the piece. There is something about the use of this famous chord progression that just makes it feel so right. I hope that I did justice to it and provided you and your students with a musical vehicle that will be enjoyable and at the same time educational. It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope you and your students enjoy it and find it useful for your program.—LARRY CLARKLakeland, FL 2011.
