The present volume contains all three settings by Vivaldi of the Marian antiphon Salve Regina that have come down to us. All three are for solo voice: soprano in the case of RV 617, and contralto in that of RV 616 and RV 618. The last two settings are scored for two instrumental cori and introduce woodwind instruments, respectively a flute and a pair of oboes, whereas the instrumentation of the first is confined to strings disposed in a single coro, although a solo violin is employed in three movements. RV 617, preservedin a non-autograph source in Brno, belongs to Vivaldi’s first period of sacred music composition at the Pietà (1713-1717), while RV 616 and RV 618 are works of his maturity dating from the years around 1730. RV 617 is laid out in four movements, RV 616 and 618 in six movements. All three works are noteworthy for the tenderness of their expression and skilful writing for both the voice and the instruments. The Introduction and Critical Commentary for these vocal scores, prepared by Antonio Frigé, are closely based on those of the Critical Editions by Michael Talbot, published in 1998, 1990 and 1994.

The unbroken popularity of Vanhal's sole double bass concerto in competitions and for practice and concert purposes is reason enough for us to publish the work in Breitkopf Urtext. The edition profits from Tobias Glockler's experience of many years. As with the other great double-bass concertos of the classical Viennese repertoire (Dittersdorf, Hoffmeister), Glockler arrives at convincing solutions. He began by filtering out a solid musical text from the source (which was not always free of contradictions) that was supplied with many additions. The disposition of the solo part required detailed knowledge of performance practice, since the work was written in the historical Viennese double bass tuning, and a few passages cannot be played without difficulty on a modern instrument. As with Dittersdorf and Hoffmeister, the piano reduction makes it possible to use three different double-bass tunings (solo, orchestral and Viennese). Moreover, it contains the editor's virtuoso cadenzas as well.I have performed the Vanhal in Viennese tuning and it was my thesis topic so I am thrilled to see an edition that makes this tuning so accessible. This Marian antiphon survives in autograph score among the manuscripts once in Vivaldi's possession, today preserved in the Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria di Torino. It was evidently originally a four-movement work composed, possibly in 1726, for the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice, but the openingtwo movements, which must have occupied one or more separate gatherings, are lost. In these circumstances, a reconstruction of the complete work is not a worthwhile proposition, and the edition is therefore presented as a fragment. Its vocal part was notated by Vivaldi in the tenor clef, which was used at the Pietà by a number of singers among the figlie di coro who, in today's terms, would be classified as “low (or second) contraltos”. The score is of particular interest for featuring two parts named “Trombe” that are almost certainly not for brass instruments but for “violini in tromba marina”: specially adapted violins with only three strings anda distinctive bridge designed to mimic the raucous, rattling sound of a tromba marina.

This is one of three early renaissance Marian motets, along with Mouton's Nesciens Mater and de la Rue's Gaude Virgo, edited by Ross Duffin. It is a classic example of this great composer's balanced unfolding of motifs, with two-part paired imitation followed by four-voice imitative sections and punctuations in homophony. Especially, striking is the personal supplication at the end, in the words O rnater dei, memento mei. Fazer Editions of Early Music is a choral series under the editorial supervision of Paul Hillier, founder and artistic director of the renowned Hilliard Ensemble. Although each title in this series is the result of careful scholarly research and is a reliable source for musicologists, the series' main purpose is to make practical performing editions available to choirs and other vocal ensembles. The original C clefs have been replaced by G and F clefs and the note values adapted to conform to modern practice. All the works in the series are intended for mixed voices. Each title includes a lengthy introduction in English and notes on the editorial principles. Where necessary, an English translation of the text and a guide to pronunciation are provided.
