The career of Muzio Clementi (1752-1832) spanned the lives of both Mozart and Beethoven and was exceptionally diverse. It encompassed performing on the keyboard, conducting, teaching, business activities and composition in the realms of keyboard, chamber and orchestral music. This book focuses on Clementi’s keyboard sonatas and aims to shed new light on their relationship with the complex cross-currents of late eighteenth-century musical style, both in England, where Clementi was active for much of his career, and the continent, which he visited periodically.
The first chapter summarises Clementi’s historical reputation as it developed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and evaluates the impact on it of the significant developments in Clementi scholarship since 2000. The aim is to stress the deficiencies of the established view of Clementi as a keyboard pedagogue and to stress the importance of liberating him as much as possible from this ingrained perception. This is attempted, in the remaining chapters, through close, analytical readings of a variety of keyboard sonatas from all stages of his career, comparing them with a range of works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and other contemporaries such as Jan Ladislav Dussek (1760-1812). The comparisons are made from the perspectives of distinguishing features of Clementi’s style such as his unusually intense deployment of strict counterpoint in the later keyboard sonatas; his cultivation of irregularity in recapitulations; his use of the ‘three-key’ exposition in the middle-to-later stages of his career that seems to anticipate nineteenth-century developments, and also his assimilation of heightened virtuosity into the earlier sonatas, often in the form of cadenzas more suggestive of the keyboard concerto – a genre Clementi seems, rather strangely, to have neglected. The book has been envisaged as a direct response, not only to the most recent scholarship on Clementi, but also to current approaches to eighteenth-century music in general, including the interdisciplinary work of Annette Richards.

Lubos Fiser (1935-1999) was one of the most talented Czech composers of his generation. Born in Prague, he studied at the Prague Conservatoire from 1952-1956 and then at the Academy of Music. He was known to the public for his many film scores but it was his other compositions, many of them written under difficult political conditions, which mark him out as a composer of significance.

Fise r's eight piano sonatas have a special place in his oeuvre. Fiser subsequently eliminated his second sonata (1956) from his compositional repertoire. From the third sonata onwards (1960), subtitled Fantasia, the composer wrote a two-movement composition, in which he continued to incorporate as his fundamental musical device the confrontation of sharp contrasts in tempo and mood. Beginning with his fourth sonata (1962-1964), Fiser created a single-movement work in an expressive, formally focused composition which betrays a progression towards greater compactness of musical shape in a concise yet effective musical testimony. The fifth sonata was written in 1974, the sixth sonata in 1978. The seventh sonata from 1985 was dedicated to Frantisek Maxian, the eighth sonata was written in 1995.

Piano Sonata No.1 was written in 1955. Fiser worked on it during his last year at the Prague Conservatoire under the supervision of Emil Hlobil. The piece is one of Fiser's early works which still respect a traditional compositional approach. Unlike his major and late piano sonatas, this sonata has three movements, each representing the traditional Classical-Romantic form. The sonata was premiered by Fiser's fellow-student and friend Antonin Jemelik in Theatre D34 on 30 January 1956.

The new setting for this piece is based on the single edition to date (SNKLHU, 1957); only with regard to a few inconsistencies in the score was it necessary to consult the composer's manuscript (kept at the National Museum - Czech Museum of Music, acquisition number 297/2006).

As part of the Hannenheim Edition, the pianist Moritz Ernst also presents, in addition to the anthology of all the surviving piano sonatas of Arnold Schoenberg's master-class pupil, the edition of Hannenheim's two previously known organ works. The early Phantasieis imbued with a late Romantic harmony interspersed with chromaticisms, which reveal influences of Wagner and Strauss, but also of French organ romanticism. More typical of Hannenheim's personal style is the classical three-movement Sonata with its all-pervading serial technique; the last movement presents itself as an extensive passacaglia with 10 variations and is steeped in complex polyphony.

Rodolfo Halffter (1900-1987) was a Spanish composer who was exiled to Mexico in 1939 following the Spanish civil war, and spent the majority of the rest of his life there. His Sonata Op. 16 (1947) was the first of three Sonatas for solo Piano. Like most of his early compositions, its tonality and harmonies are clearly inspired by Scarlatti and Falla, displaying only traces of the serialism that would later dominate his works. Light-hearted, dance-like, and quirky, this attractive piece is immediately likeable. Scored in three movements: Allegro Deciso - Moderato Cantabile, Molto Espressivo - Allegro Con Spirito .

Sonata in D minor is Szymanowski's earliest violin work and was written in 1904. In its conventional character one clearly feels the dependence on the violin sonatas of Franck ahd Brahms and the composer's desire to master the traditional, three-movement cyclic form. Sonata for violin and piano (arranged for cello by Kazimierz Wi komirski), a juvenile work, in spite of the fact that its style is still not crystallised, betrays the composer's growing interest in tone colour and foreshadows the bold and rich melodic line characteristic of Szymanowski's later works.
