The collection of 130 studies published in two volumes was compiled with the aim in mind to meet the demands of trombone instruction from the highest classes of the music schools to the Academy of Music. lt was selected from those 'traditional' studies which played a decisive role in trombone playing and instruction at the turn of the century and have become the most frequently performed studies since then. However old-fashioned these studies may seem, they belong to the best ones with regard to safe, smooth technique and the elaboration of a nice sound and will definitely serve their purpose in the future as well. On compiling the volumes, I have attempted to observe not only asequence according to grade of difficulty but the variety of characters as well. I am convinced that these studies are both useful and, when performed sufficiently colorfully, may contribute to overcoming the monotony of technical exercises. The articulation sings and markings of dynamics, which often differ from the original, try to meet this aim.I had already used this collection of studies before it was printed. 1 had to realize soon that the technical level of the first pieces was too high to assure a smooth transition from the trombone tutors written for beginners. As a result, I found it necessary to start the first volume with a shortened and facilitated version of some studies. Since these pieces in question have been changed considerably, a * beside the composer's name refers to the fact in each case that they are arrangements.I recommend my work to my past, present and future pupilsPál Makovecz.

The composer wrote this work in 2004 for the Corpus trombone quartet, to whom it is dedicated. The piece consists of a slow and a fast section, both in rondo form. Its musical language makes use of a great many new elements of playing technique, which provide an excellent opportunity for displaying the fantastically virtuosic capabilities of both the new modes of sound production and the performers: they include Wah-muted notes with modulated tone colour, harmonic-glissandi, sequences of buzzing notes sung into the instrument, valve-modulated harmonic glissandi, rapid double- and tripletongued staccatos, and flutter-tongued, lip-trilled and buzzing lip-vibrating notes. The purpose: playful, good-humoured music-making, to exorcise evil from our lives.

Apar t from numerous publications in the field of music education, the music teacher and composer Hermann Regner (1928-2008) contributed considerably to the brass repertoire, such as material for wind orchestra and wind band. Influenced by his studies with Carl Orff, he paid special attention to the fusion of instrumental education and contemporary music. A matter of particular concern for him was to write practical, easily playable new music for children, young people and amateur musicians - music that takes the technical competence of beginners into account and motivates them to concern themselves with new sounds, rhythms and playing techniques. 'All begins well' is a small collection of easy pieces for trombone with piano accompaniment. The five short pieces are a perfect addition to instrument lessons and 'Jugend musiziert'. The pieces are very melodic, using simple keys (F major, B flat major, E flat major) which are easy to play by the trombone, and they cover a compass from B flat to E flat1.
