In composing Puszta, Jan Van der Roost wrote folk dances related to Slavonic folk music. Its character and sounds are comparable to the Hungarian and Slavonic dances by Brahms and Dvorak and to the Hungarian Rhapsodies by Liszt. All the melodies, however, are newly composed, not adapted from existing dances.

Contempla tion is the first movement from the Clarinet Concerto by Jan Van der Roost, which was commissioned by Musica Reservata VOF, Belgium, and is dedicated to the famous clarinet soloist Eddy Vanoosthuyse. A slightly mysterious intro leads to an orchestral climax with ascending melodies and the entrance of the soloist. This occurs at first with fragmentary musical ideas, and then with longer melodic lines. The orchestra delivers the dialogue withthe soloist, and creates a fitting musical frame with a delicate and colourful instrumentation. Towards the end of the music, the atmosphere from the beginning is restored, and the soloist finishes on the same note that he started the piece on. The concerto is also available as a piano reduction. It may be surprising to see a fanfare piece commissioned by a Japanese ensemble, since fanfare orchestras are typically found in Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg, and also France and Switzerland. Senzoku Gakuen is one of the largest and mostprestigious music universities in Japan, and home to a wide variety of ensembles and orchestras. Since 2006 they have had a fanfare orchestra, which was started by Sotaru Fukaishi, a euphonium teacher who felt further performance opportunity wasneeded for saxhorn instruments. Fukaishi had loved the sound of fanfare orchestras ever since visiting the World Music Contest in Kerkrade (Holland) several years earlier. Jan Van der Roost was involved with this new initiative from the beginning, and they were also joined by Manu Mellaerts for certain projects. The Dean of the music department, Professor Kazuo Tomioka, fully supports the ensemble and commissioned Ostinati. The première took place on June 11th at Maeda Hall inMizonokuchi (Kawasaki) where Senzoku Gakuen is based. The piece opens with an impressive timpani solo, followed by brass and saxophone. The rhythmical pulse remains constant and the music is fiery and assertive in character. A pentatonic melodygradually emerges and the music loses its vehemency and softens. The initial percussion ostinati subsequently recurs and the first section of the piece concludes in a similar mood to the opening. The second movement is sweet and melodic, opening witha long passage for the saxophone family in a minor key. The same theme then appears in the major and is developed upon; the music builds to a majestic orchestral forte, reminiscent of a pipe organ in its sonority. The theme returns in the originalminor key with a change in instrumentation leading the movement to a quiet and peaceful end on a soft E minor chord. The finale starts with percussion: a four-bar pattern is repeated several times over which the movement’s melodic themes areintroduced. These melodic elements are varied and used in different versions and the ostinato idea, which characterizes the entire piece, is highlighted. The theme travels through the orchestra, appearing on various instruments and in variousregisters. It captures the listener’s attention and displays the full range of sound and colour within the fanfare orchestra.

This suite was written in the style of traditional Russian folk music, but does not use existing melodies or themes as its basis. The colourful and varied work contains a number of surprising turns, but also familiar sounds. After the introduction, a kind of Trepak follows ? a fairly quick dance with attractive themes. The second movement (Garovot) is predominantly slow and conveys some melancholy, although, during a more dynamic passage the passion flares up again. Finally, the Troika takes us along in a reindeer sleigh through a grand snowy landscape. This is a wonderful tribute to the music of Eastern Europe in the style of some of the great Russian masters.

This opening piece was commissioned by a youth orchestra, which explains why it has such a lot of dynamism, energy and optimism. However, it begins in a stately and noble fashion, in the lower range of the wind orchestra. Soon the rhythmical drive takes over, imbuing this piece with a vibrant and energetic character. Some lovely melodic lines and themes are also integrated within this fast section. Wind music in Croatia is developing apace as more and more ensembles are excited by the next generation of composers finding so much success worldwide. For this reason, the Vatroslav Lisinski Music School commissioned this short but effective piece from Jan Van der Roost. The premièretook place in Zagreb on April 24 2013, conducted by Mario Komazin. Namase Rhapsody differs in several respects from most other concert works by Jan Van der Roost, with its impressive twists and turns and musical allusions to the work of John Adams. A first, minimalist movement, is followed by a lyrical andexpressive second movement for various soloists in different ranges. The third movement sees a stark change of mood with a rigid metrical figure before a powerful and energetic close.

The Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten-Innsbruck (Austria) invited Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost to write a work to mark the bicentenary of the Tyrolean fight for freedom, which was settled in 1809. Various musical elements reflect this historical event. First, a hymn-like section rings out, based on melodic fragments from the ‘Tiroler Landeshymne’ (by Leopold Knebelsberger), which intertwine in a counterpoint-like arrangement. The second passage is more bellicose in character, and mirrors the fight of the Tyroleans - under the inspiring leadership of freedom fighter Andreas Hofer (1767-1810) - against Bavarian, French and Italian troops. Next, a broad, chorale-style melodyappears again: here, the imposing beauty of nature in Tyrol, and the amiable, lively temperament of the people who live in this mountainous region, are glorified. This is neither a programmatic work around an historical reconstruction, nor a politically inspired work: it is a combination of factual and cultural components, with an artistic and sonorous character. The use of the flugelhorn in particular gives Tirol Terra Fortis its ‘couleur locale’: for this beautiful instrument can invariably be found in the Austrian wind band. The commissioning music society had therefore specifically asked the composer to incorporate the instrument in this work. It certainly enhances the already extensive colour palette of the modern concert band!

Right from the outset until the very end, the speed, energy and “drive†of the tuneful music is palpable. It’s abundantly clear why the title “Seatbelts Fastened!†was chosen: just like an airplane, this music takes off and neither tempo nor intensity are lost throughout the flight. Descending and ascending scales characterise the most important thematic material and the music explores a variety of different registers through Van der Roost utilising a great deal of different tonalities and metres. Please keep your seatbelts fastened and enjoy the flight!
