Lord of the Lake is a work in three separate movements which tells the legend of the “Sea of Flines.” Stéphane Coquet, the conductor of the Flines-lez-Râches concert band, wanted to celebrate the 140th anniversary of his band by commissioning this work. The piece can be performed either on its own, or with a narrator who intervenes between each movement, telling this legend where children and their parents thwart the cruelty of a lord holed up in his castle.

This three-movement suite for one piano, four hands was inspired by one of the largest lakes in North America, bordering Vermont, New York, and Quebec. The first movement, Wind on the Water, is a flowing piece in 5/4 meter that uses broken chords, broken intervals, and an expansive melody to capture the play of waves on the lake. The second movement, Mystery of the Deep, uses two contrasting sections, one mysterious and one cheerfully swinging, to musically portray a folkloric monster who lurks in the depths of Lake Champlain but also delights locals with occasional sightings. The final movement, Tides of Revolution, draws upon the lake's history as a pivotal battleground during the American Revolutionary War. Driving rhythms, biting dissonances, changing meters, and dramatic exchanges between the players bring the suite to an exciting close. Optional parts for percussion and violin/flute are available for download for two of the movements.

Having been interested in Mahayana Buddhism for a number of years, I went to a Buddhist monastery in upstate New York to study meditation in 1999. One evening, while walking alone by the side of the lake, I caught the sight of a 'V'shape floating and extending on the surface of the water. It was a beaver taking a swim under the moon. This image gave me insight into my relationship with silence: underneath the music is a profoundly deep silence upon which I seekto inscribe my signature through sound. It serves as a point of departure that led to a series of works.In Lakescape V, the tranquility in the original 'lake' series is disturbed by showers of 'phonetic particles' taken from Wai-lim Yip's poetry (in both English and Chinese) as the piece traverses through different states of mind.Lakescape V was written for and dedicated to loadbang who gave its world premiere at the Miller Theatre's Composer Portrait on November 17th, 2016.- Lei Liang.

Un vent tourbillonnant, une pluietorrentielle et des éclairs aveuglants s’abattaient sur lui, quand soudain, la même voix se fit encore entendre. C’était la voix de Kai, l’esprit du lac. Presque aussitôt, le vent cessa de souffler et la pluie s’arrêta de tomber. Le sinistre ch teau de Jesse se détachait des rochers.Chaque jour, la princesse captive chantait sa tristesse. Plusieurs fois, elle avait tenté de fuir, mais en vain, elle fut aussitôt reprise. Innove pénétra dans le ch teau en compagnie de Kai.
