Peu après sa composition en 1886, Camille Saint-Saëns demanda à Auguste Durand que Le Carnaval des Animaux, qu'il considérait comme une fantaisie parodique, ne paraisse qu'à titre posthume. Il pensait probablement que ce divertissement ternirait le sérieux du reste de son ?uvre. Le Carnaval a donc été publié en février 1922, deux mois après la mort du compositeur. Le compositeur contrevient néanmoins aux restrictions qu'il avait imposées: en 1886, Charles-Joseph Lebouc obtient l'autorisation de publier une transcription pour piano et violoncelle de l'avant-dernier morceau de l'?uvre : 'Le Cygne'.
