Composed by Claude Barthelemy, Okawati's is the first piece from the series Irrawady (also named Asia is running through my ears) for Alto or Soprano Saxophone and electro-acoustic system. Commissioned by a Cultural Centre, this series is made of four parts and two interludes (without Saxophone) and was used as a piece of contest. This particular piece, Okawati's is representing a hotel located in between rice fields in Bali. At night, there is no silence but the noise of frogs and birds flying around. The player is supposed to impersonate one of the birds. Lasting 5'34 minutes, the score of this piece is written in modern writing and requires some good knowledge of modern and contemporary pieces and some very good technical knowledge. Quite unusual and fun to play, it also includes a CD which features the part of the electro-acoustic system. It is followed by: - Interlude I - Ubud - Le dos des caimans - Interlude II - Gazebo.

In January 1999, Nieminen worked with his oboe piece Elegy for Agatha. The work kept running through his mind. Its musically intimate and intriguing setting seemed to include sufficient elements for explicating a bigger whole. The poem by Hannele Huovi was the inspiration of the sequel: Kuulen virtaavaa valoa ja se on pimeys (I can here streaming light and it is darkness). In his work, Nieminen also looks back on his days in military service. The mental pictures created decades ago on guard during winter frost amid silence combined with Huovi's poem took a musical shape. I Hear Streaming Light (1999) for the String Quartet was created out of these ideas, which together with Elegy for Agatha constitute a whole called I Can Hear Northern Lights. All musical material and melodic themes of the string quartet piece originate from Elegy for Agatha but they do not appear in their original forms.

Work for Chamber Ensemble dating from 1989. The composer writes: The Title SHADOWLAND refers on the one hand to a blurred 'Landscape' of shadows, where small shadows are formed behind other shadows, and where the outlines are constantly disintegrating. On the other hand, the title refers to the fanciful and unreal landscapes I felt in the music while I was writing it. SHADOWLAND has four movements, with proportions 4-7-4-3. These proportions can be found on various levels, from the smallest cell to the largest form. The first movement is divided into four parts which have exactly the same proportions as the whole pjece, and behind the fastrunning melodies and trills that dominate the whole movement one can hear, in the second, third, and fourth parts, anticipations of the second, third and fourth movements respectively. The second movement begins at the edge of silence with almost unperceptible glissandi and indistinct chorales. Gradually the hushed landscape is drowned out by sudden expressive melodic outbursts and ends with violent dance rhythms. The third movement is built up of clouds of staccato tones and is a further development of the pointillistic ideas from CLAIROBSCUR. In th last movement the horn plays a long soloistic melody line which the other instruments imitate and echo. These echoes swamp the horn line from time to time. SHADOWLAND was commissioned by and dedicated to The London Sinfonietta.
