Because students generally begin playing the treble recorder only after several years' study of the descant recorder, Treble Recorder ABC is not intended for beginners but presupposes a basic knowledge of musical concepts and instrumental technique. Laszlo Czidra (1940-2000), the Hungarian recorder player and teacher known all over the world, set three main educational objectives in compiling the volume: to enable students to acquire the transposing manner of reading of the instrument tuned to F; to give a systematic technical foundation; and to make the students acquainted, at least on the level of skills, with the ornamentation and variation practice of the Renaissance and the Baroque, two eras providing the majority of the repertory for the instrument.

Th is successful tutorial book for descant [soprano] recorder is now available in a revised new edition. The German text has been revised in the light of recent spelling reforms and the layout in four colours is now even clearer. For many of the songs harmonic symbols have been added to facilitate accompaniment on the guitar or piano. The first volume places emphasis on correct and musical breathing and tonguing technique. Plenty of space is given to ideas for little improvisations and a selection of well-known songs and pieces encourage motivation and enjoyment as children learn. This child-friendly, practically tested introduction to the recorder is suitable for children from the age of about 5.

Wh ere in volume 1 the notes in the octave c1 * d2 were carefully introduced and consolidated, volume 2 expands the range of notes to include c3 and gradually introduces chromatic notes. Rhythmic knowledge is extended (semiquavers, dotted crotchets) and different playing styles are practised (legato, staccato, portato). Lots of songs from all over the world, together with increasing numbers of original pieces, provide varied and colourful teaching repertoire. The teacher's book deals with the prerequisites for starting lessons (buying and caring for an instrument, the principles of teaching) and gives plenty of practical tips for lessons and suggestions for introducing each piece. Following on from volume 2, the publishers now present a tutor book for treble [alto] recorder that continues to feature the descant [soprano] recorder too (ED 8641/ED 8642).
