Written in 1814, the Fidelio Overture was the fourth and final version chosen to open Beethoven's only opera by the same name. Though not as lengthy or grand as its three predecessors (the Leonore Overtures 1 - 3), it served its purpose as an opening statement without overshadowing the music to come. This string arrangement transposes the original key of E Major into the much more playable key of D Major. It retains the original opening which alternates between powerful majestic bursts and lyrical harmonic progressions while finishing with the energetic presto to the end. Rhythms have been simplified but are very much in the spirit of Beethoven's writing. The optional timpani gives this arrangement a symphonic quality that closely resembles the original.Written in 1814, the Fidelio Overture was the fourth and final version chosen to open Beethoven's only opera by the same name. Brahms Academic Festival Overture was composed in 1880 as a thank you to the University of Breslau which awarded him an honorary Doctorate. The work is a boisterous collection of student drinking songs but not without some of his patented dark melancholy in between sections.Matthew McCrady has beautifully arranged the entire 10-minute work for 12-part Brass Ensemble, Timpani and Percussion, employing the rich sounds from Brahms' composition. For advanced performers, the instrumentation is for:4 Trumpets (2 in C, 2 in B-flat plus Flugelhorn), 2 Horns, 3 Trombones, 2 Euphoniums, Tuba, Timpani and 2 Percussion.

I arranged Beethovenas Coriolan Overture for a small group of instruments, both to honor Beethovenas 250th birthday and to provide a template for the young composers invited to create a new composition as part of the Yale School of Music New Music Workshop in Norfolk, Connecticut. Beethovenas embodiment of tragic social conflict is a particularly timely and inspiring example for younger composers of how such turbulence and struggle might be revealed in music.I arranged Beethoven's Coriolan Overture for a small group of instruments, both to honor Beethoven's 250th birthday and to provide a template for the young composers invited to create a new composition as part of the Yale School of Music New Music Workshop in Norfolk, Connecticut. In the sphere of orchestral music Rheinberger is largely unknown today, but during his lifetime he had great successes. Along with two symphonies and a piano concerto he wrote, among other works, three concert overtures, the second of which, composed in 1880, had as its literary basis Schiller's dramatic fragment Demetrius. This work was praised thus in the Neue Zeitschrift fur Musik in 1880: A fresh hand, feeling for interesting harmony and flowing melody are revealed in this formally faultless, brilliantly orchestrated work....

Brass town Bald is the highest point in the U. S. state of Georgia standing at 4,784 ft. It is located in the northeastern part of the state and is part of the southern Appalachians. The mountain received its name from the Cherokee word Itse'yi (New Green Place) or (Place of Fresh Green) referring to its grassy, instead of timbered summit. The term Brasstown came from a confusion of Itse'yi with Untsaiyi (brass). The mountain itself is known to the native Cherokee people as Mt. Enotah. The term Bald is common terminology describing mountaintops that have 360-degree unobstructed views. Brasstown Bald Overture was written to depict the beauty and grandeur of the panoramic views from the top of this mountain. The opening fanfare sets the mood for the majesty of the Appalachians. The addition of the woodwinds during the second time through the fanfare portrays the dancing sunlight across the mountain peaks. The middle section is a quaint folk tune to represent the quiet stillness of the night. The fanfare return and a new day breaks forth.Brasstown Bald is the highest point in the U. While serving as music director of Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra (1962-65), Jones was commissioned for a work to commemorate the 35th anniversary of that organization. The result was Overture for a City, which was premiered by SBSO in October, 1964. Today, fifty years later, the World Doctors Orchestra, an organization of physician/musicians from all over the world, is making its West Coast debut. The WDO traditionally chooses a work by a composer native to the country in which they perform, and for this Seattle concert they chose Sam Jones and his Overture for a City.
