Until now, anyone looking for music on the theme of Pentecost and the Holy Spirit for church services and concerts usually had to do so in larger collections that cover the entire church year or parts of it. With Music for the Spirit, there is now a choirbook specifically for the feast of Pentecost for the first time, closing a gap for an important feast of the Catholic, Protestant, and Anglican churches. Over 500 years of choral music from Renaissance to the modern age are covered here with compositions from the German-, English-, Italian- and French-speaking regions. He obtained his doctorate in 1962 and completed his habilitation (postdoctoral lecturing qualification) in 1973. He then devoted himself to musicology at the Universities of Freiburg i. Br, Karlsruhe, Wuppertal and Bochum. Since his retirement in 1997 he has been living in Erlangen. Between 1997 and 2007 Breig was appointed General Editor of the complete edition of Richard Wagners letters. He is the author of many publications and editions, particularly of early clavier and organ music by Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach, but also of Richard Wagner and Arnold Schoenberg. Furthermore he is the author of the Bach article in the dictionary Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (MGG, 2nd edition). Pieter Dirksen (* 1961) studied organ, harpsichord and musicology. His 1996 doctoral thesis on Sweelinck's keyboard music was awarded the Praemium Erasmianum. Dirksen has since published many studies on, and editions of, several masters of the 17th century (Sweelinck, Bull, Cornet, Scheidt, Scheidemann, Buxtehude, Luebeck, Johann Christoph Bach) as well as Johann Sebastian Bach. In collaboration with Harald Vogel, he edited Sweelinck's Complete Works for Keyboard Instrument (4 volumes, Breitkopf and Härtel). Dirksen is a member of the academic board of the Bach-Jahrbuch as well as a sought-after harpsichordist, organist and continuo player in international ensembles. Dirksen issued a number of much-acclaimed solo recordings (Sweelinck, Scheidemann, Boehm, Louis Couperin, Bach-Vivaldi, Bachs Art of Fugue and Goldberg Variations). Edison Winner 2003. Reinmar Emans (* 1953) studied musicology in Bonn and wrote his doctoral thesis on the cantatas and canzonettas of Giovanni Legrenzi in 1982. From 1983 to 2008 he was an academic staff member of the Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Institut Göttingen, and temporarily deputy of the managing director. He has taught in Bochum, Marburg, Detmold, Cologne and Hamburg, and has been a freelance contributor to various music periodicals. In 2000 he was responsible for the conception and direction of the Thuringian state exhibition 'Der junge Bach: Weil er nicht aufzuhalten' in Erfurt. Mendelssohn produced an early work for Organ in 1837, but it was a London music publishing firm who commissioned the first of his mature Organ works. The second half of the commissioned pieces are published in this volume. Mendelssohn himself saved all his manuscripts and they have survived in libraries in Berlin and Krakow, providing the subtitle of this book.Eleven movements are included here, all written in 1844 and 1845. What were originally commissioned as 'Voluntaries' were changed at the composer's request to 'Sonatas'. Whether one considers these movements as drafts and sketches or as distinct musical entities in their own right, the works are not identical to the final, printed versions. For those who appreciate or study the Mendelssohn Organ oeuvre, this volume is of immense interest.While the Organ never completely fell from grace as the instrument of church and religious music, it is the editor's belief that in the century dividing JS Bach from these works of Mendelssohn, fashion and church practice had greatly diminished its importance and few works of real note were produced. Mendelssohn was introduced to the Organ early in his prodigious career and found a warm audience for his Organ performances in Engand, to which he returned nine times over nearly twenty years. / Orgue

Par FAURE GABRIEL. Gabriel Faure 's Nocturnes, nos. 1-8. Gabriel Faure was born in Pamiers (Ariège) on 12 May 1845. Owing to his precocious musical gifts, he was able, at the age of nine, to enter the celebrated Niedermeyer School, founded in Paris to train organists and choirmasters. For about ten years he received instruction of great quality, centred mainly on the study of sacred music and the great classic masterpieces, into which he was initiated notably by Camille Saint-Saë ns, his Piano teacher. As soon as he left the school, Faure began a brilliant career as an organist. In 1896 he succeededTheodore Dubois as an organist at the Church of the Madeleine in Paris, and was appointed professor of composition at the Conservatory, where his pupils included Ravel, Koechlin, Enesco and Schmitt. Meanwhile, he had met Liszt in Weimar and had been initiated into Wagner's art, which, however, never really influenced him. Appointed director of the Conservatory in 1905 after Theodore Dubois' resignation, a member of the French Institute and music critic, Faure spent his last years in solitude, suffering from an irreversible deafness that obliged him to resign from the Conservatory in 1920. He died in Paris on 4 th November 1924. The music of this sometimes misunderstood composer who wrote in nearly all genres (except Organ music) is of great refinement. An enemy of bombast, Faure put his elegant counterpoint, a highly individual harmonic style, unpredictable turns of phrase, and the secret of an unusual musical sensitivity at the service of music that is both varied and of very high quality./ Répertoire / Piano

Traditional. Par GRAEF FRIEDEMANN. This collection of pieces for saxophone and organ or piano is designed for use in concert performances as well as for church services and other ceremonies. It contains the traditional American spirituals extended by composed introductions and endings, or interludes and written solos. The notated solos here are the results of more than ten years of personal experience with these tunes and chord changes, from a saxophonist to other saxophonists. The organ part may also be played on acoustic piano if the bass voice is played one octave lower in respective passages. These passages are marked. There is a transposed part for B flat and E flat saxophones.
