A programatic work by composer Doris Gazda that sets out to depict the historic moon landing by the Apollo 11 astronauts and the famous first step by Neil Armstrong. A sound portrait of this remarkable event in America history.In July, 1959 the world watched and listened as the astronauts of Apollo 11 traveled from the Earth to the moon. The mission, launched by NASA, successfully carried men to the surface of the moon and returned them safely to earth. The spaceship was made up of a command module, Columbia, and a lunar module, Eagle. Astronauts Neil Armstrong, flight commander, and Buzz Aldrin, pilot of the lunar module, actually walked on the moon. The third astronaut, Michael Collins, piloted Columbia, the command module that orbited the moon while Armstrong and Aldrin were on the lunar surface.The 238,000-mile trip to the moon took four days. Apollo 11 fell into orbit 60 miles above the moon's surface. The Eagle separated from Columbia, orbited the moon nine miles above the surface and then made a powered descent, touching down on the moon in the Seat of Tranquility. Six hours after landing, Armstrong stepped onto the moon's surface uttering these memorable words that brought to reality the possibilities of space travel and exploration, That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.Armstrong and Aldrin spent two hours walking on the lunar surface. They set up some scientific equipment, raised an American flag and left a plaque signed by the Apollo 11 crew and President Richard Nixon, reading:Here men from planet earth first set foot upon the moon. July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind.Twenty-one hours after landing, the Eagle with Armstrong and Aldrin onboard, left the moon to reunite with Columbia. After docking successfully, all three men got into Columbia. They jettisoned the Eagle and Columbia left lunar orbit to make the return trip. Two days later Columbia re-entered the Earth's atmosphere and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean.

PROGR AM NOTES: In December of 2019, when I started working on this piece, Boeing conducted the first orbital test flight of its CST-100 Starliner capsule. This event was important because, since the retiring of the space shuttle program in 2011, NASA had no other way to deliver astronauts into orbit, except through Russia. Boeing is one of two companies working to get American astronauts into space on American capsules. This was of special interest to me, not only because I am a space enthusiast, but because my own cousin worked on the Starliner's systems. PERFORMANCE NOTES: The main theme should be pleasant and legato, almost as if gliding. The second theme should be noble, as if heading where no one has gone previously. When the two themes come together, the contrast between them should not be stark as they were always intended to be played as one. Mercury - the Roman god of financial gain, commerce, travelers, boundaries, luck, trickery, merchants, and thieves. A popular deity in Roman culture, he was instantly recognized by his unique winged shoes (talaria) and hat (petasos). With its close proximity to the sun and faster orbit than all other planets, the Romans named this small celestial body after the swift-winged messenger of their culture. It is not surprising that in Holst's major orchestral suite The Planets that Mercury utilizes such light and swift themes. There is some duality to the title of the work. Part of it involves my impression of what a playful chase of the winged messenger sounds like. The other part is the opening motif chasing two themes of Holst around the rest of the work. It was only after developing the first few ideas that I recognized some of the commonalities with some of those same themes from Holst's orchestral work. There are several quotations from that famous piece by Holst (notably as both are stated successively at mm. 13-20). The idea of someone having to chase the Winged Messenger struck me as a unique title around which to craft a work. One of my core beliefs about music is that it can be imbued with meaning by a composer, and as the sonic story unfolds an ensemble, director, and audience members can draw out their own meaning from the experience. Who exactly is chasing Mercury? I leave that up to the wonderfully creative minds of the young ladies and gentlemen who have the opportunity to bring this work to life. The opportunity to compose music and allow student musicians to give this piece new life and draw out different meanings is a humbling experience. Rehearsal Notes and Suggestions As stated earlier, the opening motif (a range of a seventh) comes back frequently in the work in a variety of settings and textures. Throughout the work, it is important for students to recognize the two themes from Holst when they are present in the sound canvas. If the solos (clarinet and alto saxophone) are utilized, the supporting parts around and underneath those lines must be sensitive and play in such a way to properly balance those parts. There are number of muted sections for the trumpet section, and I would advocate for all trumpets acquiring the same mute to contribute to unity in timbre. The bold fanfare sections (the first occurs at m. 37) must be presented with a unified articulation style. As the texture intensifies prior to m. 169, it is crucial for the ensemble to play within themselves and exercise musical courtesy to allow all voices to be heard as they arrive at m. 181. Space Journey is a three-movement suite depicting the launch, orbit and return to earth of a spaceship. Blast Off Into Orbit begins with a dramatic launch portraying the spaceship powering into the atmosphere. Zero Gravity allows the listener to float in space as a Lydian melody in the flute provides a light, weightless feeling while the percussion accompanies on metallic instruments. Re-entry to Earth features a descending fanfare announcing the return of the ship through the atmosphere back to earth. The ceremonial theme depicts the spaceship breaking through the sky, and landing in full glory.

< em>Orbits by Emily Howard is a contemporary work for Soprano Saxophone and Crotales. It is cast in two equal length movements that are thought of as contrasting 'Etudes in Dynamical Systems'. Orbits is a result of the close work with mathematicians Lasse Remp-Gillen and Alexandre DeZotti, who created two different sets of mathematical data, to which the two movements respond musically. It was first performed by scapegoat, Joshua Hyde and Noam Bierstone, on 17 November 2015 at The Foresight Centre, Liverpool, as part of the Leverhulme Artist in Residence Presentation.

The music is cast in a single 11-minute span which builds gradually in distinct developments of materials which emanate from the opening. It aims to evoke key aspects of Venus -- of imperiousness, of being 'under the spell', as it were -- together with planetary movement in outer space. Repeated notes evoke, perhaps, satellite radio signals and movement, mythic names in Morse code or just a vague communicative presence.

The word GONG is saturated with associations: the splendour of the Orient, mysticism, drama, loud metallic clangour, violent impact, etc. The present piece draws upon all those connotations, but it is primarily a symphonic drama about the life and behaviour of the sun, our closest star and prime source of life on Earth. Describing the sun in music is not a new idea, of course; during a visit to Greece, Carl Nielsen was inspired by the orbit of the sun and its very un-Danish ferocity and thus wrote the Helios Overture. GONG is a Helios Overture too, of sorts, albeit more abstract. Recent astronomical research shows, that the surface of the sun reverberates like a gong, in four different, simultaneous tempi (not directly depicted in the score, though); the sun looks like a GONG, - the O in the written work looks like the sun; there is even a solar research group called GONG (Global Oscillation Network Group). Formally the composition follows the life and fate of the sun, from the initial explotional birth through the hyper-activity as energy source as we know it today to the final, predicted flaring up and collapse into a so-called white dwarf. But - being a musical composition, not an astrophysical thesis - GONG is brought to its compositional conclusion by a real concert-ending, a chord taken from the middle of the piece and sustained over several bars, from virtual nothingness to full force.

Perihelion I> was commissioned by the Cory Band as their own-choice piece for the 2013 European Brass Band Championships, held in Oslo, Norway. Winning the set piece section of the contest and coming second to Eikanger-Bjorsvik Musikklag with their own choice selection, Cory went on to become European Champions for the fifth time.Cory MD Philip Harper had asked for a 'Concerto for Band' to fully exploit his outstanding band of virtuosi, and composer Philip Sparke created a one-movement work with contiguous sections, first featuring horns and flugel, then trombones followed by cornets and a slower central section for percussion and baritones, euphonium andbasses.The piece is abstract in nature, without a specific programme, and the title merely reflects the fact that the piece was begun on January 2nd 2013, the day of Earth's perihelion - the point in its orbit when it is closest to the sun. It could also be argued that the piece weaves between moments of brilliant optimism and dark shadow, both of which can be the result of bright sunshine.
