Bärenreiter?s new scholarly-critical edition of op. 87 edited by Christopher Hogwood is based on the score and parts from the first edition; where necessary he also consulted the autograph.

The first edition parts were engraved after the manuscript parts and not after the score. Here the readings of the legato phrasing and the dynamics more accurately reflect the composer?s intentions than in the first edition score.

But that is exactly what Alexey Igudesman has provided for in his 'Violin and Violoncello and More”. He has responded to popular demand and arranged - no, recreated! - duets from his previous publications for two violins. These encompass many different styles but always with Alexsey's own individual and quirky touch. The contents list reads like a world tour, passing through Scotland, Ireland, Israel, Khazakhstan and many other countries. Igudesman took great care to 'custom make” the cello part as he wanted these arrangements to be as musically valuable as his original versions. He encourages the players to be creative, adding improvisation or even choreography but, above all, to have fun. For more than forty years Allain Gaussin fascinated by astrophysics has found a major source of inspiration in observing the cosmos as attest a number of works going from Vent solaire (1974) to Philae (2015) by way of L’Harmonie des sphères (2006). Ten years later the 'Messiaen du Pays de la Meije' Festival hosted the first performance of the piano trio Les Céphéides. The musical journey enables the listener to enter a space 'just as impalpable and fragile' as that in which moves each Cepheid variable – this star whose brightness varies over regular periods according to two elements: the diameter of the heavenly body and thetemperature reading of its surface. How does one translate such a change in music? The bow's sautillé gettato on the violin and cello gives the score's opening pages this granular glittering that leads us 'towards the centre of the Cepheid variables'. From there a stream of colourful arabesques – the composer's 'ribbon figures' – gushes forth. After a weightless transition the cello unfurls its contemplative meditation which ends up in a suspended coda open onto the infinity of the starry vault. As musicologist Michèle Tosi accurately says so it is that the full richness 'of a teeming imaginary universe' unfolds.

Antonin Dvorak's Humoresque has been arranged for Violin Cello and Piano by Alex Fraser.

Par YE XIAOGANG. 'Datura was commissioned by Accessible Contemporary Music and was written in a unique way. I composed the piece in installments over the summer of 2006 and emailed them to Seth Boustead who forwarded them on to the ensemble. In this unique way of working I was able to have time between each installment to think about what would come next and to get feedback from the performers about the music. This is a very new and different way for a composer to work. Usually I write the piece in solitude and then hand it to the performers but writing in installments allows more communications between the performers and the composer and allows the audience to hear the piece as its created. Datura is another series of pieces composer written about Asian plants and flowers. Datura is a very common houseplant in south China and very beautiful but it can also be used as a hallucinogen, usually with unpleasant results. In this piece the composer juxtaposed the other beauty of the plant with the intense inner would it can create by using alternately tranquil and intense musical passages.' In 1920 Maurice Ravel was asked by his publisher Durand to contribute to an issue of La Revue Musicale dedicated to Claude Debussy. A supplement included the first movement of Ravel?s Sonata as well as works contributed by Debussy?s friends Stravinsky Satie Dukas Bartok and de Falla to name only a few. This 1st movement of Ravel?s Sonata of which the autograph is lost then developed into a large scale four movement chamber music work utilizing a more modern music vocabulary than found in almost any other Ravel composition. Bärenreiter?s scholarly-critical edition the first ever of this masterpiece presents the work in two performing scores. It contains anintroduction on the history of the work reflecting Ravel?s work and rehearsals with violinist Hélène Jourdan-Morhange and cellist Maurice Maréchal. Sources for this new edition include the engraved copy the personal autograph scores (with earlier versions of some passages) which were used to rehearse the work and the first edition scores with emendations by Jourdan-Morhange and Maréchal. Included in the appendix are the original fingerings by the performers which are not found in the first edition. Fantasia transcribed for violoncello and piano by Christoph Sassmannshaus-Born in Erfurt the composer Edward Mollenhauer (1827 1914) achieved success in America as a soloist and teacher. His best-known pieces for young violinists are The Infant Paganini and The Boy Paganini. Both appear here in their original version for Violin and Piano and for the first time in a transcription for Cello and Piano by Christoph Sassmannshaus.The Mollenhauer fantasia The Infant Paganini is a charming introduction to early virtuoso techniques. It calls for bowing techniques such as detaché legato spiccato and arpeggios over three strings. Players are also expected to play harmonics andpizzicato.It (BA 10693) can be mastered by young Cello students who are working with volume 4 of the Sassmannshaus Early Start on the Cello and can manage first to fourth position.The Boy Paganini is an impressive concert piece which is more demanding. Its two movements call for changes of metre harmonics and pizzicato. Other challenges include chords on all four strings and simple passages in octaves.
