Par SCHJELDERUP FREDRICK. Momentum Sequences was commissioned by Skjold Skoles Musikkorps (Norway) for their 60th Anniversary in 2021. The title of the term Momentum can be explained by an event that creates extra energy, or the driving force of a moving object. In this case, both the driving force, The energy and the object can be translated to the music, the conductor and the band. The piece is divided in three movements; «I.Signals», «II.Light» and «III.Finale» which builds up the Momentum of the piece’ character and theme. / Date parution : 2023-07-31/ Répertoire / Concert Band/Harmonie

Vals d'la Masca; Il racconto della Montagna; Sequenze sotterraneeTh e Alpinia Suite was commissioned and composed for the festival <> and is dedicated to my friend and colleague Elio Galvagno. It was performed for the first time on August 30, 2011, in the Church of San Giovanni in Saluzzo, by an ensemble of professional and student guitarists from all over Europe. This piece was written to commemorate the first ascent of mount Monviso, by William Mathews, Frederick Jacomb, Jean Baptiste Croz and Michel Croz, exactly 150 years before, on August 30, 1861.The first movement is a small Waltz. I imagined a Masca (a sort of alpine pixie, a teasing sprite), dancing all around the house and playing tricks, mostly harmless and funny. The Masca is a legendary and very important character in the folklore of my valleys, and all rationally inexplicable events of everyday life are ascribed to her - such as objects that cannot be found anymore, holes in flour sacks, salt in sugar bowls...The next two movements are a homage to the Mountains. The Tale is a sort of journal, a bright and peaceful chronicle of a hike uphill, in which the beauty of the place is highlighted by an easy harmony and a sweet melody. After this, Underground sequences evokes that same world in a darker and nocturnal way; the faster pace and the choice of repeated and varying patterns are meant to show the transformation of the former environment into something more complex and tormented. Here mountains are a metaphor of human life, warts and all: their sundrenched slopes and their green pasture grasslands, but also their icy and dangerous northern sides, which demand calm, training and caution.(G. Signorile).

Musical dice, a curio of musical history, was a favourite parlour game of the 18th century. The sequence of pre-composed bars is determined by the throw of the dice and the resulting piece sounds like a new composition. The CD-ROM 'Musical Dice' is a multimedia version of this historical pastime. Throw your own dice or leave it up to the computer - your PC will play the finished piece of music right away or print it out for you to play later on keyboard or piano. Or you can save the piece as a MIDI-file and e-mail it to all your friends as a musical greeting! Export your MIDI-files to a sequencer and create different instrumental parts and arrangements.

The term Rolling Earth comes from a poem by Walt Whitman and the music is a celebration of the planet we live on. It has three thematic elements: the sequence of chords of the opening, a brief staccato passage passed around different instruments in the fashion of a canon, and an expressive melody first played by the woodwinds and later repeated by the trumpet, saxophone and euphonium. A gentler section comes to a point of contemplation, when a strong rhythmic motive brings it back to the celebratory mood of the opening. Ensemble instrumentation: 2 Piccolo, 4 Flute 1, 4 Flute 2, 3 Oboe 1-2, 2 Eb Clarinet, 4 Bb Clarinet 1, 4 Bb Clarinet 2, 4 Bb Clarinet 3, 2 Eb Alto Clarinet, 3 Bb Bass Clarinet, 3 Bassoon 1-2, 3 Eb Alto Saxophone 1, 3 Eb Alto Saxophone 2, 2 Bb Tenor Saxophone, 2 Eb Baritone Saxophone, 3 Bb Trumpet 1, 3 Bb Trumpet 2, 3 Bb Trumpet 3, 3 Horn in F 1-2, 3 Horn in F 3-4, 3 Trombone 1, 3 Trombone 2, 3 Trombone 3, 3 Euphonium B.C., 2 Euphonium T.C., 6 Tuba, 2 Timpani, 2 Mallet Percussion: Xylophone. Pfarreimusik Wünnewil-Flamatt requested a new work to be commissioned for the celebration of its 111th anniversary. They asked the composer to create a piece lasting approximately 11 minutes and 11 seconds. The band asked Jan Van der Roost to reflect on a number of aspects from the past, as well as the current state of affairs. The piece contains lyrical movements, cheerful and jubilant parts, as well as light introverted sequences. Fantasia Helvetica is a varied concert piece with a number of challenging passages, but is also fun to play! Eric Ewazen’s THREE INVENTIONS were inspired by Bach’s Two-part Inventions, yet they sound thoroughly like Ewazen. Composed for harpsichord (with a piano adaptation following later), Ewazen’s inventions maintain a pure “one note per hand” texture until their final chord, with strong-but-free imitative counterpoint between the two voices. While Ewazen may be best known for his wind music, he is a pianist himself, and composers’ works for their own instrument are a direct insight into how they write for their own performances. The piano adaptation of THREE INVENTIONS is also available as a separate publication.THREE INVENTIONS was written for my dear friend Maria Rojas, who premiered the work on a faculty recital at Juilliard. Maria is both a pianist and a harpsichordist, and I first met her when she gave a demonstration of the harpsichord for the students in my theory classes.I’ve always been captivated by Bach’s series of Two-Part and Three-Part Inventions. With the Two-Part Inventions, I’m amazed how Bach could create such wonderful intricacy and counterpoint with only two voices. I consequently modeled my inventions after the counterpoint of Bach, involving the traditional contrapuntal devices he used: imitation, development, harmonic and modal shifts, fragmentation, and sequence, essentially creating a dialog between two completely equal voices conversing with each other!Bach wrote 15 Two-Part Inventions (as well as 15 Three-Part Inventions, not to mention the 48 preludes and fugues in The Well-Tempered Clavier!), and that’s just the start of his voluminous repertoire for the keyboard! I was happy just to write three!!!Each of my inventions has a distinctive mood. The first is in a relaxed, yet cheerful C Major tonality (as a nod to Bach’s Invention No. 1 in C Major); the second is heartfelt and lyrical; and the third invention (involving a Gigue rhythm in the compound meter of 12/8) is energetic, and full of life and spontaneity. The third is primarily in a minor tonality, resulting in a feeling of drama, bringing the THREE INVENTIONS to an exciting finale.
