Par BRAHMS JOHANNES. During his summer vacation in 1891 Brahms composed six vocal quartets which would appear in print later that autumn. This set, to become Brahms’s opus 112, clearly falls into two groups. The first two in the melancholic tone of the poems Sehnsucht (Longing) and Nächtens (At Night) by Franz Kugler come upon four Zigeunerlieder (Gypsy Lieder) bursting with vitality and power. The first public performances of the work were very positively received. Even while Brahms was still alive, the work was performed not only by the four solo voices originally intended, but also by choruses. The first six books each comprised seven songs for voice and piano accompaniment, and Book VII contained the subsequently composed songs nos. 43 to 49 for four-part chorus and piano ad libitum. Brahms had completed his compilation of the books in the winter of 1893/94- however, most of the songs were written earlier. Brahms' primary text source was the two-volume collection of 'Deutsche Volkslieder mit ihren Original-Weisen” (German Folksongs with their Original Melodies) published in 1838/1840 by Anton Wilhelm von Zuccalmaglio./ Répertoire / Voix Haute et Piano

Arrangement for Piano Fourhands-In the 19th century arrangements for Piano four-hands were usually versions which people played at home if the works could not be heard in concert. In cases such as these Brahms did not however just make functional versions butcreatively transcribed his works for the piano. As the composer he allowed himself greater freedom than arrangers for publishers did. In this form his arrangements greatly contributed to the success of his works in musical life inthe 19th century. It is on account of their creativity that Brahms’ arrangements have attracted new interest in musical circles over the last few decades. This Urtext edition of the Symphonies nos. 1 and 2 for piano four handsoffers a scholarly musical text following the recently published volume in the Brahms Complete Edition.

?No opus number? is what Johannes Brahms gave his astonished publisher to understand when he offered him the Hungarian Dances for publication in 1869. He placed a great deal of importance on the factthat he had merely ?set? popular Hungarian melodies and not composed new works as such. As true as this reservation is it did not affect the success of these works. The Hungarian Dances are today withouta doubt amongst Brahms? best-known compositions. Brahms himself made an arrangement of the dances 1 10 originally for Piano four hands for solo Piano. Henle are now publishing a revised version of theseimpressive pieces with the up-to-date text in the new Brahms Complete Edition. Rolf Koenen?s fingerings provide the best possible help for mastering these complex works.

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's works for violin and harpsichord obbligato pervade his entire compositional oeuvre. The earliest works, like the Sonata in D minor still numbered BWV 1036, date back to the years of study with his father, yet show already a remarkable creative will of his own. The latest work, the fantasia 'C. P. E. Bachs Empfindungen' in F flat minor of 1787 is characterized by the composer's highly expressive late style. The new two-volume edition of Wiener Urtext Edition contains C. P. E. Bach's complete works for harpsichord (piano) obbligato and violin. Vol. 1 contains not only the sonatas Wq 71-74 and BWV 1036 but also the arrangements of the trios Wq 143-145 for violin and harpsichord, most of which are included in C. P. E. Bach's autographs, as well as a - previously ignored - early version of Wq 71 which, like BWV 1036, grants a rare insight into the early works of the composer. Vol. 2 contains the four major sonatas of 1763 which already fascinated Johannes Brahms. Brahms not only played them in concert, together with Joseph Hellmesberger, but also published two of these sonatas in 1864. This volume concludes with the two late works 'Arioso' and 'Fantasie' of 1781 and 1787 respectively. With these works, C. P. E.
