Stephen Albert's Into Eclipse for Tenor and Chamber Orchestra. Full score.'Into ...(+)
Stephen Albert's Into Eclipse for Tenor and Chamber Orchestra. Full score.'Into Eclipse is based on Ted Hughes' adaptation of Seneca's Oedipus. The five episodes chosen astexts for this musical setting form an abbreviated version in song of this Roman dramatisation of the Oedipus myth.Seneca's play has no external action. As Peter Brook informs us in his introduction to the play '...it takes place nowhere...possibly it was read aloud in the bathhouse to friends.' It therefore seemed possible to take the essential elements of the tale and transform them into a rather complete musical statement that wasnon-theatrical yet dramatic in its own terms. Into Eclipse is thus not a monodrama nor even a solo oratorio but rather a 'Herosong.' It is somewhat in the tradition but not of course in the manner of earlyballadeers and minstrels who often set ancient stories and myths to music and performed these musical narratives for both court and country village. The story is sung from different viewpoints (that of Creon thechorus of citizens and of course Oedipus the king) all encompassed within the bounds of one man's voice and his complement of instruments. There is no concious attempt to 'paint' or emphasise particular words or phrases withinthe text nor was there an effort to musically heighten Seneca's already nightmarish vision with its withering onslaught of bloodthirsty images. To do so seemed to risk weighing down the cycle in a morbid atmosphere one filledwith caricature and the grotesque.' - Stephen AlbertThe full-Orchestra version of Into Eclipse was premiered on September 8 1986 by the Seattle Symphony with Gary Lakes Tenor andGerard Schwarz conductor. It is also available in a version for Tenor and Chamber Ensemble [Flute/Piccolo Clarinet/Piccolo Clarinet Horn Trumpet Percussion (2 players) Harp Piano and Strings]. This version was premiered on

Handel originally wrote Israel in Egypt in the late 1730s but this the well-known version was not written until twenty years later when he discarded the old one as out-of-date. The 'new' version is a two-act oratorio where the chorus is far more prominent and serves much greater variety of expressive purposes than one finds almost anywhere else in Handel's output. Notably there is extensive use of the double-chorus. It did not take long for this 1756 version of Israel in Egypt to assume a place alongside the Messiah as one of England's favorite choral treasures. Part I tells of the Israelites' deliverance from their Egyptian captivity at the hands of Moses; thetwelve choruses that describe the miracles leading to the Israelites' freedom are among the most stunning and colorful ever written -- images of hailstones pestilence and even the glorious parting of the Red Sea are achieved without once resorting to the kind of pictorialism that a lesser composer would relish. Part II Moses' Song recounts the Israelites' victory. This is the Schirmer Edition of the Vocal Score and hence contains a piano reduction of the original orchestral accompaniment. The full score is also available order code DP16788.

Opera in 3 acts Text: Meredith Oakes after Shakespeare-The opera The Tempest i...(+)
Opera in 3 acts Text: Meredith Oakes after Shakespeare-The opera The Tempest is inspired by Shakespeareâ??s play rather than literally being based on every aspect of it. There are key images from the play as well as new material. From among the playâ??s many themes and possible interpretations the opera focusses on the difficulty and the necessity of mercy. The libretto uses contemporary vocabulary. Its lines are short rhythmic and rhymed or semi-rhymed echoing Shakespeareâ??s strophic songs more than his blank verse. This choice reflects the playâ??s magical ritual childlike elements and acknowledges the traditional power of incantation in song. The operatic Prospero is the passionately vengeful man seen in the play more than the wise disconnected actor also seen there. Despite his near-omnipotence he finds things out as he goes along and experiences contradictory emotions to the end. Please note: Full Score and Parts are rental material. Par LEIVISKA HELVI. Finnish composer Helvi Leiviskä (1902-1982) created a broad-based output of orchestral works, solo songs and chamber music. Her style could be described as moderate modernism, deriving influences from multiple sources such as late Romanticism, Symbolism, Expressionism, Existentialism and Neo-Classicism. Leiviskä's output is characterised by philosophical and religious themes, images of nature and narrative structures. Many of her works focus on human existential angst and spiritual searching and growth. Helvi Leiviskä originally completed her Piano Quartet in A major op. 1 in 1926 but revised it a decade later, in 1935. Written for the traditional piano quartet lineup (violin, viola, cello and piano), the work is in three movements and has a duration of about 25 minutes. It features religious and ecstatic imagery such as may be found in French, German or Russian neo-Romantic styles. Leiviskä's Piano Quartet is considered one of the cornerstones of her chamber music output. Its early version was premiered in two parts at student recitals of the Helsinki Music Institute (the 1st movement in 1925 and the 2nd and 3rd movements in 1926). The revised version was performed in full by Timo Mikkilä (piano), Sulo Aro (violin), Ilmo Ranta (viola) and Pentti Rautawaara (cello) on Finnish radio in 1939. The work was also on the programme of Leiviskä's second composition concert in 1945, being performed on that occasion by Jussi Jalas (piano), Erik Cronvall (violin), Erik Karma (viola) and Yrjö Selin (cello). Two commercial recordings have been released (Finlandia Classics 2012 and Telos Music 2016). It is published for the first time 2022 with an extensive foreword by Susanna Välimäki. The product includes the full score (piano part) and a set of string parts. Duration: c. 25'. Have a look inside by clicking 'sample'. / Date parution : 2022-05-31/ Répertoire / Quatuor avec Piano

for Six Violoncellos-These are three musical portraits of the sounds and images associated with trains. I. On Track is energetic focusing on the forceful rhythms of a train speeding down the tracks with the reiterated rhythmic patterns (wheels-on-tracks) passed from one cello to another and the more sustained whistle sounds floating above. II. Lonesome Whistle is a blues-oriented movement in a ballad idiom with a texture that is often solo versus accompaniment during the verse sections punctuated by refrains in a homophonic 'barbershop' style. The listener might hear refernce to Harold Arlen's Blues in the Night. III. Coming 'Round is a set of theme and variations on a well-known American train song. The six variations are entitled: Ornamentation Tango Lament Cowboy Sounds and Final Reprise.

Uses: General LentScripture: Psalm 73:28; Hebrews 10:22; James 4:8The tender mercies of God's grace is the focus of this timeless Fanny Crosby text adapted and set to sensitive music. Sounding like anostalgic early American hymn this singable tune is well suited for the “journey of life” images contained in the poetry. Opportunities for full four part writing are peppered throughout along with simple unisonstatements. The lyric violin part is stunning and is included in the octavo. Duration: ca. 2:54.
