Zoltà ¡n Kodály s unaccompanied mixed choruses first appeared in print in 1943 as a collected volume published by the association Magyar Kórus. This collection contained twenty-five works. In 1951, the volume was released again in the author s edition, being expanded with eight new compositions, but without Els áldozás (First Communion). Reprint editions of this collection had been distributed by Editio Musica Budapest until 1972, when a commemorative extended edition of the mixed choruses was issued, edited by Lajos Bárdos. Until now, reprints of this collection with forty-five compositions have been circulated. Péter Erdei carefully compared the printed edition with themanuscripts of the works preserved at the Kodály Archives. As a result of his work, in 2011 we emended a number of misprints, including those that had been inherited since the earliest print. Seventy-five years after the first release, the time has come for Kodály s collected choral works for mixed voices to appear in a completely new, expanded edition. Our collection contains six compositions that were not included in earlier editions: Jövel, Szentlélek eristen (Come, Holy Spirit), Miatyánk (The Lord s Prayer), Miserere, Salló Pista, Semmit ne bánkódjál (Do Not Grieve), ejesztend t köszönt (A Christmas Carol). In addition, two versions - both equally authentic - are published of the work known under the title of Naphimnusz (Canticle of the Sun), due to earlier editions the new release comes with lyrics in Hebrew and English (Adoration), as well as Dénes Szed s Hungarian translation (Napének [Hymn of the Sun]). This is the most complete and most authentic edition of Kodály s mixed choruses to date it is printed in a slightly larger format than previous editions, and it contains new easily-legible music scores and an informative epilogue. Diese Ausgabe entstand unter der Mitwirkung von Lajos Bárdos.

3 Hymniske Ansatser (3 Hymnic Dispositions) for mixed choir SATB was composed by Per Norgard in 1985-86. The work consists of music composed to 3 poems, e.g. Gunnar Ekelof 'Komposition (Composition), Thoger Larsen 'Strandvalmue'('Beach Poppy') Rainer Maria Rilke 'Die Parke'('The Parks') Programme note Just as the three movements in their succession move from the sea (Ekelof), across the beach (Larsen) and into the country, to the parks (Rilke), in an analogous way each of the three movements in their point of departure is hymnic in character - but later on moves into the more varied and complex tone paths of the inner regions of themind. 3 Hymniske Ansatser (3 Hymnic Dispositions) is sung in Swedish (1. Komposition”, Gunnar Ekelof), in Danish (2. Strandvalmue”, Thoger Larsen) and in German (3. “Die Parke”, R.M. Rilke). The work could be performed in a programme with 'Prelude to Breaking', performed after this instrumental piece. Per Norgard .

Volume II of the collected edition of the choral works of Veress contains seven Hungarian folksong cycles or cantatas, a choral poem in Hungarian and a choral cycle in English. In his first creative period (1929-1939), which he spent in Hungary, Sándor Veress's direct involvement in Hungarian folk music research played a decisive part: his folksong experience gained through personal collecting work found expression in his first period of composition for mixed choir. In the course of the 1960s, after his emigration, he returned on two occasions to the a cappella mixed choir genre: in 1962 he wrote a piece for mixed choir to mark the 60th birthday of the great Hungarian poet GyulaIllyés (Óda Európához - Ode to Europe, based on the poem by Illyés), and in 1967, at the request of the Australian Radio Company, he composed for the 'Adelaide Singers' chamber choir Songs of the Seasons, a seven-movement madrigal cycle making exceptional demands on the performers, to verses by the Australian poet Christopher Brennan (1870-1932).

In 1964, Emil Petrovics (1930-2011) arranged two verses for mixed choir from Sándor Weöres's early rhythm exercises, Himfy Stanzas. Like a choral rhapsody, this two-movement work, Metropolis, juxtaposes the idyll of the night and the hustle and bustle of early morning workers. The title Metropolis appears first as a counterpoint to the peace of the countryside, then as a home for work, factories, and a vibrant affirmation of life. Both movements share the effective use of the mixed choir as well as the prominent use of imitation and dynamic increases built up through repetition. Larger choirs will indeed find a demanding and rewarding piece of repertoire in this work byPetrovics.

Brahm s was one of the great masters of Romantic choral music: not only did he sense how to create a good sound with the human voice, but through the choirs he himself conducted he gained great experience and skill in vocal composition. Alongside large-scale choral works for large forces he also composed a capella pieces to poems by contemporary poets (Rückert and Goethe, for instance), and to the words of German folk songs. Six of these works were selected and translated into Hungarian by Dr. Károly Vargha (1914-1993), who also translated the German texts of several great composers such as Bach, Haydn, and Händel. These six works for mixed choir are published here in twobooks, edited by Lajos Bárdos.
