Iiro Rantala's Veneziana for chamber ensemble and piano (2021-2022) is a 50 minute long program about all things Venice; how famous composers were affected by the city, how they affected the city and became part of the Venetian Story – told with an Iiro twist. The meeting of Prokofiev and Diaghilev turns into a real nutcracker ballet Romeo and Steve, whilst Mozart loses his mojo when visiting Venice. Monteverdi starts and Verdi completes the waltz boom - and Sibelius finds his national romantic melancholy again.Veneziana is scored for wind and string quintets and a pianist. This product is a study score (A4 sized, spiral bounding). The performance material is available for hire from the publisher.Content s:1. Gondol Ride to St. Mark’s Square2. Romeo and Steve3. Rantala’s second opera, Die Zaubermelodika was a commission by the Komische Oper Berlin. His double concerto Joy of Life has been programmed by numerous orchestras. The fast-and-furious Seven o’clock Overture has been dubbed as Finnish Candide Overture.

The composer made this arrangement of the Third String Quartet for string orchestra in March 2003. The first performance was given by the Eos Orchestra, New York, conducted by Ken Selden in the Concert Hall, Ethical Cultural Society, New York City on 24 April 2003.Quoting composer: In the summer of 1989 I composed a choral work, Out of the Ruins, for Agnieszka Piotrowska's BBC2 documentary which dealt with the physical and emotional responses of some of the inhabitants of Leninakhan to the earthquake which devastated Armenia the previous December. When he heard the recording of the work that I made with the Holy Echmiadzin Chorus under the fervent conducting of Khoren Meykhanejian, Alex Balanescu suggested turning Out of the Ruins into a string quartet. There seemed no reason or opportunity to do this until I felt the need to add to the intensity of my experiences in Armenia the no less profound experience of witnessing the images of the Romanian revolution on television during the latter part of December 1989.Just as the structure of my Third String Quartet (1990) may connect it with the First, so they also share a debt to Thurston Dart (my professor at King's College, London, between 1961 and 1965). It was Dart who had the inspiration to send me to Romania in 1965, ostensibly to study folk music. The volumes of transcriptions that I brought back with me had remained unopened until, with this proposed 'celebratory' string quartet (though at the time it was difficult to know quite what to celebrate in postrevolutionary Romania), an occasion arose where I could use this material in what seemed to me was a non-exploitative manner. The compositional procedure was as follows: to take Out of the Ruins as a template on which the Romanian vocal or instrumental music would be superimposed, quite often stretched into new intervallic shapes through the demands of the completely pre-formed harmonic structure.

Imagi nation mixed with local authenticity are among the hallmarks of the legendary Argentinian composer and guitarist Pujol. TRES PIEZAS VIAJERAS is clothed as a travelogue, yet it is also a dance suite bringing together the main musical genres of the Rio de la Plata district of Buenos Aires. The “Bremen” movement (composed in Germany) is a modern tango, “Pesadumbre” is a slow milonga (an older folk dance that gave rise to tango), and the “Ezeiza” movement is an urbanized treatment of the candombe dance, known for its dizzying speed. Each movement may be played separately as well as in the complete setting making this work a versatile and stimulating addition to the repertoire.TRES PIEZAS VIAJERAS (Three Traveling Pieces) emerged during a trip to Germany in 2021. Its three movements bring together the three musical genres of the Rio de la Plata area: Tango, Milonga, and Candombe. “Bremen” is a characteristic modern tango written on a bass line that “walks” the heaviness of an urban and warm rhythm. “Pesadumbre” (Sorrow) is an air in Milonga Campera style (Milonga from the countryside), in a slow tempo, portraying the lethargy of a melancholy siesta. “Ezeiza” (a town near the international airport in Buenos Aires) is an air in Candombe style: an urban Candombe of great rhythmic vivacity. It presents a rhythm that at times bumps into itself and, at other times, reaches an extremely fast, dizzying, and violent rhythm.
